Yeah it's really super frustrating. The only other thing than pchat I know of with good tools is open canvas.

Which is strange since you mentioned connection issues - I've never had problems with it when I used to mess with it years ago. What happens exactly, if I may ask?

The boyfriend and I are both on routers. When we try to setup the whole thing, we get our local host IP (which doesn't work). I know there's port forwarding and the other thing, but it's such a hassle that we're not really willing to go through I suppose.

I know the topic is not the latest but I have found nice online application that allows to draw together at the same time.
And there is also a chat and a webcam, so it is even better.

Maybe someone will use it. It is draw.chat
