(This starts off as Zoe being only seven years old.)
Zoe sat on one of the swings on the swing seat in the playground at her school. She was wearing a black dress with a black bow in her bright red hair. The rest of the kids stayed away from her, saying she was weird because she wasn't like her older sisters. She hated wearing dresses and outfits like the one's er parents forced her to wear. She had been going to this school for only two weeks and already everyone knew about her family.

Rookson was playing kickball and having a good time. He was wearing a plain white T-shirt, Cargo shorts, and sneakers. A ring attached to a necklace was around his neck, but hidden under his shirt, it was too large at the moment, so he kept it under his shirt to prevent it from coming off. His wild black hair flowed through the air as he kicked the ball high into the air. He ran as fast as he could through the bases and managed to get a home-run. His team cheered and gave him praise as he looped around to the back of the line. He was very happy that his caretakers managed to get him into a local public school, he was having a blast. He smiled with glee to himself as he stood in the back of the line, it slowly faded to a curious look as he turned to see a girl in a dress all alone on at the swing set. He scratched the back of his head in thought, looking at the game and then back to the girl. After a few moments of indecision he decided it would be best to make as many new friends as he could, that's what his caretakers told him to do anyways. He ran out of the line and jogged towards the girl on the swing. He reaches her in a matter of seconds and stands in front of her. After rubbing the back of his head, letting his fingers run through his soft hair, he speaks up. "Hi, there", he says confidently with an innocent smile. He wasn't used to talking to people outside of the orphanage, and this was his first day at an actual school, but he remained strong.

Zoe had been watching the kickball game nearby, while swinging back and forth a little at a time. She didn't really have friends at the school but she knew about the new boy because he was in her class. She still was too shy to speak up and saying anything to him or anyone. She looked back down at the ground, using the tip of her shoe to draw what looked like a rose in the sand under the swings. She noticed a shadow was cased in front of her and she looked up to see the new kid. She blinked at him with her bright brown eyes filled with curious as to why he came over to her. She didn't know what to say until her spoke up and smiled at her. "Uh, hello." She said quietly, her voice was soft and quiet, she was terribly shy around other kids. It looked like she was used to being alone in her room at home, hiding away from her family and parents. "I-I'm Zoe." She said, looking down at the ground.

Rookson's smile broadens when she responds and tells him her name. Social awareness wasn't one of Rookson's strong points, although he blended in socially pretty well, he didn't understand her timidness. Nevertheless, he stood up straight and puffed out his chest, and stabbed one of his thumbs into his chest, and rested his other hand on his hip, giving a small smirk. He happily replies, "I'm Rookson...But my friends call me Rooks or Rookie". He towered above most kids his age, and was 2 years older then the girl he stood before, but he didn't know that, neither did he care what her age was at the moment. It didn't give him a sense of intimidation, but rather the kind of feeling you get when your near a big and friendly dog, an aura of power that was protective. He breaks his confident stance and looks at her quizzically, "Why are you dressed up all fancy?". Rookson has only seen business people in the city on television wear what she was wearing, he didn't even know they made that kind of stuff for kids. He quickly gives a kind smile and says, "It makes you look pretty", he cheerfully walks over next to her and leans his head down to where he can see the side of her face and her eyes. His hands rested on his knees, and his deep blue irises peered into her one visible eye, demanding her attention.

Zoe giggled when he did that. "I don't really have any nicknames, I am just Zoe." She said with a small shrug. She was getting a bit more comfortable around him but could hear her father's voice in her head telling her that it is better to be alone than have other's around who only hurt you, which made her smile quickly fade as quick as it had came. Her parents were still together but they always fought and her sister's would force Zoe into her room, telling her that it was grown-up stuff and she shouldn't have to hear it. She could tell he was taller than her and older but it didn't matter to her, in her young mind, he was just another kid looking to make new friends. She looked down at her clothes that she was wearing. "My mommy said I should dress like this because it is fitting for the daughter with powerful parents. I don't really like it." She said with a small shrug. She blushed a little when he called her pretty, she hadn't been expecting that whatsoever. "Thank you." She said quietly, looking at the ground, not noticing that he bangs were covering one of her eyes. She was surprised when he had gotten closer to her face, not expecting that at all and looking into his deep blue eyes with her bright brown ones. She tiled her head to the side a little, wondering what he was trying to do.

He gives her a wide gaping smile when she turns her head his way, letting the light beam on his straight and clean teeth, He was lucky enough to have them fill in perfectly, His orphanage would never be able to afford dental care, but they did make sure everyone took care of there teeth. Rookson didn't have reasoning behind his actions, he just went with what he thought was right. "So, you like to swing?" he said happily, he stood up straight once more and looked up at the sky, asking, "How high have you gone?". His eyes lit up with awe and amazement as he stared up into the big blue sky. "I like going high enough to where it feels like I'm flying!", he exclaimed happily. He got back down to earth and smiled once more at Zoe, "I can push really hard, maybe I can make you feel like you can fly!" he says energetically. Rookson stared back down into the girls bright brown orbs and waited for her response.

Zoe smiled back at him but it was a small smile, a simple shy one that was rare to see as well. Her parents were able to afford good dental care but they didn't need it for her because her teeth had came in straight as well, but she currently was missing a tooth that had fallen out. "Yeah, I like swinging! I haven't gone very high." She wasn't scared of heights, she was scared of falling. She looked over at him, smiling a bit as he talked about how high he went and see such a happy expression on his face. She wasn't expecting him to offer to swing her at all, she usually just rocked back and forth. "Uh, sure." She said, shyly.

Rookson gave another big smile when she said she enjoyed swinging, then gave a small frown when she said she hasn't gone very high, but it quickly fades away. Rookson eyes widened and Zoe received the biggest smile that Rookson could ever pull off, it was one of pure joy, and all it took was her to agree to let him push her. His smile dies down a bit when she responds shyly, He took it as her being afraid. He reassured her, "Don't worry...It's really fun!...I won't let anything bad happen!", he exclaimed confidently, he said it as if it were a promise that he would take to the grave. He positioned himself behind her and grasped the chains slightly above where her hands were at. He asked, "Ready?", but before she could respond he had started to pull back and the push forward. Eventually he had her swinging at a moderate height, he was smiling the whole time and letting out small laughs every now and again. He wasn't having a hard time pushing her, and was enjoying himself. He was still cautious though, not pushing her to full height, just in case she didn't like it. He asked her, "It's fun....right?", in between swings, he gave Zoe another goofy grin.

Zoe was afraid of going high in the air but she trusted that Rookie wouldn't let anything bad happen to her like he said. She smiled brightly back at him when he smiled such a big smile at her letting him push her. She was about to nod when he asked if she was ready but then squealed in surprise when he began to push her. She laughed a bit while he pushed her on the swing, smiling brightly. She really liked swinging, it was a lot of fun. She looked back at him when he spoke and giggled when he gave her a goofy grin and nodded. "It is a lot of fun!" She squealed happily, grinning from ear to ear. She kicked her legs a little, but she was being careful not to kick Rookie in the stomach when he would push her. "Can you push me higher?" She asked, her eyes full of hope and wonder.

Her positive responses only heightened his own, whether she knew it or not, Rookson had already declared her as his friend in his mind. At this point Rookson was grinning widely himself, enjoying every second of it. He enjoyed making other people happy, and he was having a great time. He thought that Zoe was pretty nice, and he didn't understand why the other kids didn't hang out with her. When she asked him if he could push her higher, he accepted the challenge gratefully. He pushed her with all his might, she could probably feel the transfer of energy rush through the swing. Grunting slightly each time he pushed her, but laughing, having to step out of the way each time he pushed her now. He was still on his guard though, to stop her in-case she panicked, or didn't like it. Rookson heard a whistle blow three times, which meant that recess would be over in 5 minutes, but he was new and didn't know that. He stopped to look where the sound came from with curiosity, but turned his attention back to Zoe. Rookson cheered Zoe on, "Yeah! you're really going high now!". He began thinking about the feeling he got when he went high and asked her, "Can you feel it? Do you feel like you're flying?".

Zoe smiled brightly when Rookie began to push her higher into the air. "This is so much fun!" She squealed happily, having a lot of fun. She thought that Rookie was her friend as well, which it had been a long time since she had a friend. She held on tightly to the chains of the swing but then heard the sound of the whistle three times. "Rookie! Recess is about to end." She said to him, about to use her feet to stop herself on the swing. She was having a lot of fun with him pushing her on the swing, but she had been here long enough to know that being late to class is not a good thing. She planted her feet on the ground, slowing herself to stop. She then stood up, and turned to Rookie with a bright smile. "C'mon, we need to get going." She said, it was clear now that she had a southern accent in her voice, which most of the girls in her family had.

Rookson smiled when she exclaimed how much fun she was having. It was a lot of fun for Rookson himself. When she explained that recess was about to end, he gave a slightly disappointing look, frowning slightly, but quickly rebounded and smiled. She was using one of his preferred nicknames, that made him happy, a lot of people called him that particular nickname, especially when he was in a new place. His young mind didn't quite understand that, but he didn't think about it that much either. When she began to drag her feet on the ground Rookson helped out by holding the chains until she had come to a complete stop. She smiles brightly at him and he gives a small smile back. She explains that they needed to get going, and he scratches the back of his head. "I don't remember where to go...", he said to Zoe, being new to this school, he hasn't oriented himself properly. Rookson looked back to Zoe, assuming she would guide him to the proper place.

Zoe nodded and took his hand with a smile. "Its alright. I know where to go." She said and began heading over to where the rest of the kids where going. She was upset that recess had to end, it seemed so quick but she didn't show it, just smiled. It wasn't much longer till school was ending, but she didn't know how much more time she had left in this small town. Her parents plan to move again in a month, which she always hated about her parents being so powerful, they never stayed in one place and she always lost so many friends. She didn't understand why they had to move so much, but she usually never got the chance to tell her friends goodbye. That was always the worse part for her. It wasn't long till they reached to the rest of the kids. "Which teacher do you have?" She asked, seeing the students go to different lines for different teachers.

Rookson looked down at her hand as she grabbed his, and gave her a slightly confused look. He smiled when she said she knew where to go. Everything seemed to be going fairly quickly for Rookson today, he was having a wonderful experience at his new school. Rookson quietly followed Zoe, letting her guide him to where he was supposed to be. He observed all of the children lining up, going to their teachers, and jumping about still energetic because of recess. When Zoe asks him who his teacher was he looks around, trying to spot her. After a few seconds he just turns back to Zoe and says, "Don't I have the same teacher as you?", he asks tilting his head a little. Rookson remembers seeing her in his class room, she didn't sit that far away from him, and she stood out because of her dress and hair color. He then realized that they were in the same class and smiled with glee.

Zoe had completely forgotten that Rookie was in her class then smiled when he brought it up. "Oh! Yeah, you are. Our teacher is over there." She said, walking over to where their teacher and class was at. She always sat in front because her last name was Faye and she liked being in the front so she could hear the teacher properly. Once they got in line, she let go of Rookie's hand, not realize that she held it the hold time while bring him over to where they needed to line up or realizing that it meant anything. She smiled at him, glad that she had made a new friend today.

I happily smile once Zoe confirms that we are indeed in the same class. Once she started moving Rookie remembered she was holding on to him, and was slightly tugged into movement, he had forgotten that she was holding his hand. Once she let go of my hand I lifted it up to my face opening and closing it, it went numb when she was holding on to it, maybe it was her grip. It took a few moments for Rookson to register that Zoe was smiling at him. He quickly changed his confused/trance like look and moved his hand away from his face and smiled widely. Rookson did not own a last name since he had no records of his family when he was left at the orphanage. He grasped the ring through his shirt and thought about it for a few moments, this was the only way that he knew his actual name, or at least that's what he and everyone else assumed was his name. He was eventually made a birth certificate and given the last name of 'Foster" due to him being an orphan. This explains why he sat so close to Zoe.

Zoe hadn't been gripping his hand tightly, at least she didn't notice it. She never really held anyone's hand before besides her parents hands. The class began to head into the school, making Zoe turn back around and head inside with the others. It wasn't too long until they got into the class and she sat down at her usual seat, knowing that the bell should ring soon to let them know that it was time to go home. Zoe sometimes didn't like going home, because she would always lock herself in her room to avoid her sisters and parents. She sighed quietly as she thought of returning to her home.

Rookson followed obediently as the class started to head into the school. Rookson was looking about the halls as they traveled through the school, admiring the fingerprints, and other odd crafts that were hanging on the walls. When the class arrived at their destination I stood in the room for a while, looking about until I found my desk and sat down in it. To his surprise he was actually sitting closer to Zoe than he first thought, he was right beside her in the front row. Rookson became quiet and contained while he was sitting in his desk, though thoughts filled with returning to the orphanage and telling everyone how great his day was raced through his mind. He looked over at Zoe, while she was lost in thought, Rookson reminded himself that he would have to tell the caretakers that he made many new friends, but he like Zoe the most out of all of them. Rookson stared down at his desk and his stare went blank as he thought about the course of the day, and how things would be for now on.

Zoe had still been left in a thoughtful stare until the teacher clapped her hands, knocking the girl out of her trance. She looked up at the teacher. "Okay, class. We have on more thing to do before we leave to go home. Art!" She said, making Zoe smile brightly. Zoe loved to draw, it was her favorite thing to do. "Okay, today, I want you to try drawing something that happened to you today that made you really happy! If you don't finish in class, please do it at home." She said, smiling at the class. Zoe had already pulled out a piece of paper and began to draw. She already knew what she was going to draw. Of course, it was when Rookie was pushing her on the swing. She liked being up so high, it was a lot of fun. She was really focused on her drawing, taking care of detail. Even though she was so young, she knew a lot about art and loved to draw so she was pretty good for a seven-year-old.

Rookson quickly looked up from his desk when the teacher spoke up. His full attention was directed to the teacher and he had a small smile on his face, ready for anything. The teacher explained that she wanted the class to draw something that made us really happy today. Rookson rubbed the back of his head, causing his already wild hair to become messier. He wasn't expecting to draw anything, he wasn't very artistic, he could only draw simple things, even his handwriting was messy. He obeyed the order anyways, and pulled out a sheet of paper, and thought about what he was going to draw. Rookson already knew that it was going to involve Zoe, but he wasn't going to be able to draw a swing set, and everything else with detail. He thought to the basics and then finally decided what he was going to draw. After carefully drawing, making sure he didn't mess it up to badly, Rookson finished his piece of art. It was Zoe, specifically her head, and a wide smile was drawn onto her face. It was just about as good as Rookson could manage. He sat there staring at it, wondering if it looked to sloppy or not.
