It wasn't long til Zoe finished her drawing, happy with it, she had a hard time drawing Rookie's hair because it was so wild. She tried her best and looked good. She looked over to see what Rookie drew. She blinked in surprise when she saw that he drew her then smiled at him. "It looks good." She said, smiling over at him. Even though it did look a little sloppy, to Zoe, it looked good. She wanted to become an artist when she grew up and helped others to unleash their inner artist. She knew that she wasn't the best at artwork, but she tried her hardest to make it stand out and look good. She wasn't too good at science or history, it was all hard for her to remember. Math, art, and English were her best subjects. "Do you like drawing?" She asked, curiosity filled her large brown eyes.
Rookson blushed slightly and rubbed the back of his head when Zoe looked at his drawing. When she complimented it he blushed even harder, he thought that is drawing was silly, and sloppy. Rookson lacked common sense, and if you were cunning, and good at subterfuge and trickery, you could cause him to believe something, or manipulate him. Arts and Crafts didn't settle well with him, he neither liked or disliked participating in them, but he did like what other kids could draw. On the other hand, Rookson was a genius when it came to curriculum, he was very smart, even though he didn't look it, he is able to catch on to lessons with ease, and even go a few steps ahead of what the teacher is saying. Rookson turned to face Zoe, but his gaze was up and to the right, his hand was still rubbing the back of his head. "Kinda....I don't know?....I'm not very good at it", he said, before looking down at what Zoe had drawn. He smiled brightly, and said, "Wow, you are good at drawing!", he was also very happy that he drew him pushing her. He was simply fascinated at the amount of detail that she had put into the drawing.
Zoe had noticed that his cheeks were red when she looked at Rookie's drawing but didn't know why. She didn't think to ask or anything, just smile brightly at him. She listened to what he said, blinking a bit in surprise. "I can help you become a better artist! I have read a lot of books on it!" She said hopefully, she hadn't been able to actually teach someone how to draw before, so it will be a lot of fun for her. Not long after she asked, the bell rang. "Okay, class get your book-bags out of your cubs and line up at the front door." The teacher said then everyone stood up and headed for the wall full of cubs where the students put their backpacks for the day. Zoe grabbed her's then went back to her desk and began to pull out the things she needed to bring home for homework.
Rookson smiled at her offer, maybe getting better at drawing would improve his handwriting as well. He wasn't sure about it though, he didn't want to disappoint Zoe, but if he refused it would definitely make her sad, so he nodded as the bell rang. When the teacher told them to he stood up and gathered his cheap book-bag, that appeared to have been used for a few years. He walked back to his desk and gathered everything he needed as well, double checking to make sure that he wasn't going to leave anything important behind. Rookson then said to Zoe, "Sure...I bet you can teach me to be a very good artist", he said confidently, clenching one of his fists and closing one eye. Rookson patiently waited for Zoe to get done gathering her things, so they could fall in line with the others.
Zoe smiled at Rookie and walked over to him once she finished packing her things. "I hope I can. It will be a lot of fun." She said cheerfully. "I haven't been able to teach anyone how to draw so it will be my first time." She gave a small nervous laugh but then just smiled as they fell in line with the others. She was so happy today, she wish it didn't have to end so quickly but now she had a reason to look forward to going to school. The teacher soon lead them to the end of the hall way where two of the older students were there. They both held little wooden poles with a piece of paper on them that said "Bus riders" or "Car riders," which meant those who ride the bus have to go with the one holding the sign that said bus on it and those who's parents pick them go with the one with the sign that said car on it. Zoe was a bus rider because her parents would work late and her sisters got out of school later than she did.
Rookson smiled as she approached. He was sure she would be a great teacher. He smiled softly when she gave a nervous laugh. The day had flown by quickly for Rookson as well, it was exciting, and fun, but he had that small feeling in his gut that he knew he would have to leave soon, and say goodbye to Zoe. The teacher begins to lead the kids through the hall, and he followed in line obediently, Rookson looked back at Zoe every now and then. He looked at the kids holding up the signs oddly, He thought it was strange how they had to stand there to direct everyone to the correct transportation, rather than just putting up a sign. Rookson was a bus rider as well, he remembers the number of the bus that he road to school on from the orphanage. He turned to Zoe and said, "I'm a bus rider, I ride bus 1105", he waited for Zoe to reply.
Zoe was surprised when Rookie told her what bus he rode, since it was the one that rode. "Looks like we are going to ride the same bus." She said with a bright smiled. She was glad that she could be able to hang out with Rookie for a little longer. Her stop was one of the last one's because she lived so far away in a upper class neighborhood that not many people lived in. She smiled at him then started to walk down the same path as the rest of the bus riders.
When Zoe explained to Rookson that they were riding on the same bus her perked up. He no longer had that gut wrenching feeling, of having to leave a friend for the rest of the day. Since she lives along the same route as him, maybe she isn't that far away. Rookson was used to traveling far distances outside of the orphanage, but he mainly went into the woods that were not that far away from his orphanage. He could only go when the older orphans went with him though, so he probably could never visit her. It was the thought that counts. As Rookson walks down the path with Zoe he smiles to himself contently.
Zoe was glad to see Rookie smile so brightly from hearing that he would be riding her bus. She didn't go in the woods much, unless she had found a little stray kitten and followed it in there to bring it home to feed it. She loved animals very much, she always found stray little kittens and would bring them home to feed them but her parents would never let them keep the kitten's because she already had a cat, which was about the same age as her but he was fully grown and never did much but still stayed in her room. It wasn't long till they got to the buses and it wasn't long till they found bus 1105. Zoe climbed on the bus and found a open seat, which she took sitting next to the window. She was glad that she didn't have to say goodbye to Rookie just yet.
Rookson followed Zoe up the bus and sat next to her, giving her a small smile. He never really had any animals approach him, many stayed there distance due to his size, which made him slightly sad. He enjoyed being in the woods though, it seemed very peaceful, he would always climb up a tree and take naps. Sometimes he would sneak out at night, to find his special tree, he could see up into the night sky perfectly and stare at the stars. Rookson smiled again at Zoe, and asked her a question, "Hey Zoe....Where do you live?", he was truly curious, he was thinking about how big her house must be if she wears expensive dresses all the time. Rookson had a small room to himself, a bed, a desk and a window, it was small but Rookson really liked his room, even though he spent most of his time outside of it.
Zoe smiled back at him but it then faded when he asked where she lived. "Oh, it is just some high class neighborhood, that's what my mommy calls it. I have only seen old people around there." She said with a small sigh. She had a large room but she disliked all the space because it always felt so empty with just her in it most of the time. She had a large bed with drapes on it, something most girls her age dreamed of having, along with a large dresser, desk, painting isle, and many different paintings of her own everywhere. She didn't like it very much because she never had the same room for very long which made her sad. It was always large and empty to her, she could never decorate them like she wanted so it felt lonely. "What about you, Rookie? Where do you live?" She asked.
Rookson nodded at her response, thinking how much he would hate being in a large house with nothing but old people living in the neighborhood, he needed woods. He felt very sorry for Zoe, and frowned slightly, but smiled again, not wanting to make her feel sad. Rookson's room was void of any decoration, which he didn't mind. He had all of his pencils and materials on his desk, and a small alarm clock. His bed was right next to his desk, which he liked because he could reach his alarm easily in the morning. Rookson admired the older orphans, most of them worked out, most of them encouraged Rookson to start early so he could become very strong, so he could protect the younger orphans when he grew up. They helped Rookson install a chin up bar to his room, currently he had to use a chair, to jump up and grab it. He also did many pushups and situps an exact number was given to him by his elders and he completed a certain amount each day, and added to the number each week. He also ran for long distances, when his elders went for jogs, he wasn't able to go as far as they did, but he ran pretty far for a kid. Rookson didn't look like his physique was any different compared to other kids, but he was slowly developing a chiseled appearance, and his physical ability in sports and games show how well his working out has gone. When Zoe asked Rookson where he lived, Rookson turned to her and smiled. "I live in an orphanage", he said without any hesitation, and with a big smile.
Zoe wouldn't have guessed that Rookie did any working out because she really didn't notice those kind of things at her age. Her sister's always made sure that she ate the right food and had a regular excise reunite so she could maintain a healthy weight and this would stick with her for the rest of her life. She wasn't very strong but when she grew older, she would learn the pressure points of the body when her sister's decided she was old enough to spare against her. There was some pride to being a Faye girl, each one having to have some great talent and knowing how to defend themselves. She tiled her head slightly when he said where he lived. "Orphanage?" She had never heard the word before and didn't know what it meant. She really didn't have friends that didn't have parents to go home to or some form of a relative to take care of them.
Later in life Rookson would have to learn how to fight, he would develop many different techniques, and even use very deadly martial arts, such as Muay Thai, Krav Maga, and even learn parts of the MCMAP from one of his friends from the orphanage that joined the Marines. Rookson would develop his own technique that was a mix of all of this, and street fighting. He would be no mere street-fighter but one of the best, he would even later compete in martial art tournaments, and many want to know the certain technique that he used, only to find out that he developed the style naturally. Rookson was still innocent, and not so fierce currently though, and wouldn't be for the next few years. He looked at Zoe oddly when she said 'Orphanage?' questioningly. Rookson put two and two together and finally said, "Oh....You know...It's where kids go when they don't have a mommy, daddy, or any family members that can take care of them. I'm an orphan", he said pointing to himself and smiling.
Zoe didn't know what she would have to face ahead in her life, the scar that she will have on her arm won't come for many more years and her hair would still be long. She didn't know that her family would fall apart before her eyes and that she would move in with her grandparents. She would never think that she would choose to cut off all her hair and dress like a guy so that she could be able to live a semi-normal life. She was shocked at what Rookie said, never thinking that there was kids out their who didn't have parents or family to go home to. "That must not be fun. I have five older sisters as well as my mommy and daddy." She said, feeling sorry for Rookie, but she didn't understand why he was smiling.
Rookson tilted his head when she said that it wasn't fun. He tried to explain himself, "Well...No...I kinda do have brothers and sisters, all of the orphans stick together, and the caretakers act like a mommy or daddy, but its expensive to take care of all of the orphans. That's why we don't have a lot of money", Rookson did look slightly sad at his last statement, but he quickly smiled again. Nothing was ever going to put Rookson into a bad mood, that was already seen, his happy-go-lucky attitude shined through everything like a bright star. Rookson stretched out his arms and let out a yawn, he felt his sore muscles scream at him in agony when he stretched out. He felt tired from all that had happened today, and his head fell back and hit the seat behind him. Rookson had passed out, he was a very heavy sleeper, and it was easy for him to fall asleep. His mouth was slightly opened, and he took in small breathes, and his chest rose and fell in a rhythm; Rookson's strong heartbeat could be seen pulsating slightly through his shirt. His head was leaned to the left a bit, pointing towards Zoe.
Zoe was about to say something but shut her mouth when she noticed that he had fallen asleep. She was surprised by it but decided to let him sleep. She opened her backpack and pulled out a book that she was reading. It was a simple Magic Tree-house book, but she still loved to read anything she could get her hands on. She began to read it but she couldn't seem to focus, she was still processing the information that she had just gotten from Rookie. She didn't know how it felt to not have a mother or father or relative, but she was glad that it didn't seem to bother Rookie at all. She looked over at his sleeping face and smiled gently at how peaceful he looked.
Rookson, could sleep almost anywhere and become lost to the world. He was having happy dreams of doing things that he always wanted to do but currently couldn't, the impossibles of this world, were not of the world that he was in. Rookson also dreamed frequently about things that he liked to do, or places that he liked to be at. He mumbles softly in his sleep every so often, and he sometimes turns and moves on his own. He actually managed to form words in his sleep, "Zoe....Swing....Happy", he said in-between mumbling other nonsense that sounded like another language. His wild hair seemed to stick closer to his face and head when he slept, although it was still everywhere. It lightly kissed his face and cheeks as he slept, and dreamed about the good times. He would most likely stay this way the whole bus ride.
Zoe blushed a bit when Rookie mumbled her name while he was sleeping. She didn't really know how much he liked her. She didn't know which one his bus stop, so she thought it was best to gently wake him up. She lightly shook his shoulder, trying to get him to wake up. "Rookie." She said softly, not knowing how to wake him up. She frowned in frustration, not knowing what to do. She dogeared the page she was on and put her book back in her bag then began to shake Rookie a little more, but this time a bit stronger than the last one. "Rookie, you need to wake up. I don't know your stop and my stop is the very last one." She said, still shaking him. She really didn't want to wake him up, he looked so peaceful but she didn't want that to be the reason why he didn't get home.
Rookson was barely fazed by her gentle shaking, and he continued to sleep undisturbed, mumbling more nonsense. He was dreaming about flying, and going to the stars, among other absurdities. When she let go of Rookson to put away her book, he slowly slide towards her, but was caught when she grabbed a hold of him once more. This time when Zoe shook Rookson he turned his head a bit, and after shaking him for a while, he slowly opened his eyes. His deep blue orbs slowly peeked from under his eyelids and saw a blurry figure over him. Rookson's eyes looked glazed over, due to sleep. He finally opened his eyes all the way and smiled when he saw Zoe. He rubbed his eyes and yawned, saying, "I'm sorry I was tired...", he managed to get the part about her not knowing he stop. When he looked around, the bus suddenly came to a halt, it was at his stop. Rookson got up and gathered his things, slightly drowsily. He says, "I'll see you tomorrow", and gives a lazy, deformed, but adorable smile. He walks to the front of the bus and steps off, telling the bus driver to have a nice day as he got off. Rookson waved behind him as the bus drove away, then he walked up the sidewalk to the orphanage and stepped inside.
