While Rookie was taking a shower, Zoe decided to pull the book out her sweatshirt pocket and do some reading. She really loved reading and drawing, those talents never died with her childhood. She hadn't realized how quickly the time passed to the point that he got out of the shower. She had only a couple more pages until she finished the book. It was a simple novel that her librarian had given to her, it was called the Runner. It was about a boy who's father had died not long ago and his mother was having a hard time making ends meet. So, since he was such a great and fast runner, to make things work out, he took up a job as the runner for a local and powerful gangster who paid his teachers off to make him have great grades while not having to go to school and do the work. She was really interested in it, she never knew why though. She liked to see how the boy and his mother dealt with the pain of losing his father and seeing how things change for the boy. It was clear that she was deep in the book, she hadn't even noticed that Rookie was out of the shower, she was so taken away into another world, where she liked to be when life was hard for her.

Rookson looked at Zoe, and saw that she was reading a book, he didn't want to interrupt her, and he felt slightly tired from today's brawl in the underground, he had no idea how he would explain that to her, so he was going to keep it under-wraps until he needed to tell her. He never did read that much, he wasn't on the creative side of life, but he did imagine what it would be like to be in a different world, it always fascinated him, and he thought about it a lot. Rookson collapsed down onto his spot on the floor and immediately fell asleep, one thing that never died with his childhood was his ability to fall asleep quickly. He looked funny when he was sleeping, no matter how aggressive, stern, or intimidating he looked, when he was asleep he looked just like the innocent kid back so many years ago. He had fallen onto his back and his head was facing the ceiling, his hair gathered closer to his face, and his breathes were long and drawn out, but very quiet. His mouth was slightly agape, and his arms were outstretched to either side of him, his palms facing upwards. Just like when he was a kid he began mumbling in his sleep.

Zoe had finished her book not long after Rookie fell asleep and shook her head. "I wish I could fall asleep that well." She said with a gentle smile, glad to see that his inner child hadn't completely died away. She did wonder what happened to him to make him so serious and stern. She got off the couch and crouched down and gently kissed Rookie's forehead, glad that he was fast asleep so he didn't see. She actually had a crush on Rookie when she was a kid and it apparently didn't die with the separation they had to endure. She gently brushed his hair out of his face then put her sweatshirt back on to use it for heat seeing she didn't know where his blankets were at and didn't want to be nosy and look for them. She laid down on the couch and curled up into a ball somewhat. She was actually average height, but compared to most girls nowadays, she was short. She always slept curled up in a ball like a little kitten.

Rookson mumbled to himself more when she kissed his forehead. He actually developed his ability to be undisturbed while sleeping as he got older, he always had plenty of sleep, but was always drowsy for about an hour when he woke up. On attempt of brushing his hair out of his face it simply stayed where it was at, brushing against his skin softly. Rookson dreamed about when he was a kid, and how he met Zoe, and the pain of having her leave. Rookson didn't know it, and it would probably be hard for him to admit even to himself, but he had a crush on Zoe as well. The morning came, and Rookson's alarm clock began beeping, a rhythmic and very loud and annoying sound. Rookson, being his usual self, was still fast asleep, and probably would be for the next couple of minutes until he would eventually be woken up by the sound of the alarm clock. For now he slept soundly, he had not moved an inch since he had fallen asleep.

Zoe had also the same dream flow through her mind as she slept. She really did miss him and was glad to have him back in her life, even if it had been so many years. When the alarm went off, she tried to hang on to the last shred of last before finally getting up to turn the alarm off. She looked over at Rookie, not knowing how he could sleep through that. She crouched down and began to shake him to wake him up. "C'mon Rookie, rise and shine." She said, trying to wake him up. She yawned, still tried but it wouldn't take long for her to wake up, now all she had to do was wake Rookie up.

Rookson was slowly pulled away from his deep slumber, and opened his eyes, the deep blue irises were unfocused, but they slowly were pulled in on Zoe's presence. He leaned up and rubbed the back of his head drowsily, he looked at Zoe for a few moments, but didn't say anything. He kind of looked slightly more agitated than usual, it was probably just normal side-effects of him waking up. He stood up and walked over to the dresser and pulled out blue jeans, a shirt, and a pair of socks. He didn't seem to notice that Zoe was really there because he began to undress, and he had pulled off his shirt entirely before he noticed. He slowly turned his head over to Zoe, looked at her for a few moments and the dragged his feet along the carpet and headed into the bathroom. He got properly dressed in there and brushed his teeth, before stepping out, slipping on his jacket, pulling his belt through his pants, and placing his shoes on his feet. He turned to look at Zoe, waiting for her to tell him that she was ready.

Zoe didn't know what to expect from just waking up Rookie, but she was glad he wasn't the type of person to hit someone who wakes them out of instinct. She stood up once he was up and grabbed her jacket, she looked over at him to see him pull his shirt off, making her blush a bit then quickly look away. She knew better than to stare at someone if they do that, it wasn't like she was uncomfortable with it, she just wasn't use to it and this is Rookie so she thought it was better not to look. She was glad he went into the bathroom to change. She quickly put on her sweatshirt and combat boots that looked a little worn out but still good. They were a bit big for her feet but she didn't ind at all, they were comfortable to her. She stood up and looked over at Rookie and smiled. "I'm ready to go. My grandparents house is a bit far from here." She said, seeing as her grandparents lived in a small house that had woods almost completely all around it. Even while she went to school in the city, she lived way out in the back country.

Rookson nodded to her drowsily, he walked into the bathroom, fished out his pants from last night to grab his wallet that he had forgotten last night, and picked up his backpack from underneath the table, slinging only one of its arms over his shoulder. He stepped outside and held the door for Zoe, and closed it behind him when she was outside. He pushed the dumpster back in place and stood next to Zoe, wanting her to lead the way. He was probably still half asleep because when he looked at Zoe he gave a deformed smile, which now because he was older, looked like a mixture between cute and handsome. He was still partially dreaming at this point, but he could respond to the real-world if he needed.

Zoe giggled a little when he smiled at her, she remembered how he always had such a strange but cute smile when he was sleepy. "Do you think you will be able to follow well, I can tell you are have asleep." She said with a small grin, just messing with him. She then began to walk the way where her house was at. She was glad that she had met Rookie again, but she was still curious as to what has happened to him. She didn't want to be nosy and ask about it so she decided to wait until he was ready to tell her.

At her joking comment Rookson poked her slightly roughly in the side, and continued to follow her. He straightened up slightly as they began to walk, and as they exited the alley the sun hit his eyes, causing him to squint and look away. Rookson wanted to know what happened to Zoe, she really did look like a guy when she put her sweatshirt on, though her face did have the girly look to it. Meanwhile Rookson looked like a caveman due to his wild hair, with a much more appealing visage then that of a caveman of course. When Rookson would see her grandparents house, and the fact that they were surrounded by woods, he would probably lose his mind with excitement, he really, really, really enjoyed the woods. You could actually smell the faint sent of pine and other good, crisp, and fresh smells that came with the woods emitting off of him slightly. His jacket usually held most of the smell, but when he just left the woods he smells like it all over. Then Rookson realized what had just happened, her grandparents might shoot at Rookson when he gets there or something. Zoe didn't return home last night, Her grandparents may or may not know that, but you usually can't get away with something like this, and their precious granddaughter was being escorted home, by a rough looking individual. His eyes widened slightly and he was out of his sleep trance, he gulped slightly, but he didn't say anything to Zoe. He looked at Zoe from the corner of his eye, swapping from looking at her to ahead of him. His stern look had finally returned.

Zoe loved being in the woods as well, but usually she brought a camera with her to try to get great photos of the animals that lived there, some were surprisingly use to her by now. Every time she brought food with her, there would always be a squirrel or rabbit that would come up to her, begging for food. She only ave what she knew was in the diet of the animal. Her grandparents never minded that she would go out in the woods, but they did always want to know where she was because they wanted to make sure she didn't end up like her parents or sisters. They wouldn't shoot at Rookie, mainly because they were use to her having guy friends around, she didn't care much to talk to other girls. They would be concern, she already could see that Rookie thought the same thing by the look she caught on his face before he went to his stern look. She smiled at him then said, "Don't worry, my grandparents will be concern but they won't shoot at you. My grandpa doesn't pull out his gun often, it is only used for hunting. They will try to ask you a couple questions, but my grandma will make sure that my grandpa keeps his cool." She said, tying to reassure him.

Rookson immediately began thinking about what to say to them when he got there, he had a lot of pressure lifted off of his shoulders when she said that they wouldn't because she has a lot of guy friends. He has been shot at before, on many different occasions, it's not fun, he knows how to work a gun, and even goes to a shooting range every so often to practice, but he has never directly used one to harm someone, just shoot around them, he thinks if he can get good enough at it he can wound a target and not have to kill them. Rookson frowned a bit, he wondered if she had found anyone that she liked, but quickly shacked it off. He touched his right cheek where his scar was and tried to think of a way to explain that. Rookson sighed deeply, and tried to think of better things than worrying himself, he used to go about stuff without a care in the world, but he supposes having a life like his you have to be a bit paranoid and prepared unless you want to get killed. He especially didn't want to worry Zoe about it, he looked next to him to see her, he had slowly and unconsciously gravitated towards her, but not incredibly close. His eyes quickly shifted back to the path ahead of him.

Zoe could see something was on Rookie's mind, which made her wonder a bit. "Is everything okay?" She asked, looking at him, concern on her face and in her eyes. No matter how hard she tried, she always had a hard time hiding her emotions. Her friends would point it out that when she was just thinking, they all said she looked troubled. She always seemed to have a lot of her mind, but she never wanted others to know what she was thinking because it dealt with her crazy family. She could still remember all the times in middle school how she would stand up for her sisters, even if they didn't do the same for her. She didn't like to think about it, so she always tried to move her attention on to someone else's problems so she didn't have to worry about her's so much.

Rookson shoved his hands into his jacket pockets and said, "...It's nothing...", while looking down at the concrete path beneath him. He didn't want to worry her, although he appreciated her concern. Rookson was going to have to fight again today, mainly due to request, he would make around $400 each fight, giving most of it to the orphanage. Underneath Rookson's clothes many bruises could be seen, he rarely got stabbed though, he was especially careful around knifes after he was stabbed in the side once, and had to have his appendix removed. Most doctor's were amazed at the fact that he didn't die from blood loss, because he had lost more than 2.5 liters of blood, they said that he was running on nothing but willpower at that point. It only took a week for Rookson to recover, and he was out on the streets again, fighting for money. He still had the fact that Zoe grandparent's might not be that welcoming to Rookson, he was trying to find a good excuse.

Zoe frowned theb stopped, standing right in front of him. "Don't lie to me, Rookson Foster. I can trll by the look in your eyes that something important is on your mind. It is the same look all my sisters had when something was going to happen." She was smarter than most gave her credit for. She looked him dead straight in the eyes, her brown ones filled with concern and worry. Even when she was trying to put her foot down to get someone to talk, she still held back and couldn't find the fact that she was worried. She gently grabbed his wrists and looked into his eyes, a pleading look on her face. "We mkght have not been able to speak for many years but that doesn't mean you can't trust me anymore. I can tell you haven't had it easy this past years but I am still your friend and I would like to know so I can help you anyway that I can."

Rookson stopped when Zoe came to a halt, and his eyes widened slightly when she used his full name. She looked like she was so concerned for me that she would beat me into submission in order to help me. He blushed when she grabbed his wrist, he did trust Zoe, probably more than most people he knew, but this was something that he didn't want to involve her with, but he admired her. He's never seen anyone get all worked up and worried about him before, and it made her look cute, as he saw past her boyish figure. He smiled genuinely, it was bright, refreshing, and sincere, his eyes turned to kindness and gratefulness as he stared into Zoe's bright brown irises. It took a lot to make Rookson smile like this now a days, he looked exactly like he did when he was a kid, but know that he was more developed and grown-up, he looked several times better and more handsome. He simply smiled at her, as if to tell her to not worry without saying anything.

Zoe could tell that he didnt want to tell hrr what wasvgoing on bit ehy she had a feeling was the same excuse everyone who was older than her gave her. "You are too young to understand." She hated hearing that so much. She looked down and let go of his wrists, not wanting her grip tighten because she knew from last time that she had to not let her emotions control her or someone else will get hurt. That was one thing she hated so much about her and all the maddness she dealt with so far, not knowing that there was only more to come. She turned around and began walking without another word

Rookson's smile faded as she let go of his wrist, she looked slightly agitated, maybe even angry. He would hate it if he caused her do feel that way. He said, "Zoe....", under his breath, he thought about grabbing her by the wrist now and telling her everything, but he couldn't, it would only put her in danger. Rookson was still worried though, he walked up beside her and raised his eyebrows in concern, frowning slightly, and looking at her. He tried to think of what to say to her, he really wanted to make her feel better about it, but nothing was coming to mind. It made him feel sad that he couldn't tell her, and it really made his head hurt, but he couldn't not now at least. Rookson finally said, "It's a secret...", with a small smile, he didn't know if it would work or not, but he kind of doubt it would.

Zoe hated when others had to keep secrets, she had some of her own but at least she didnt hide it when others tried to get her to talk about it. She simply sighed at what he said,"Everyone has secrets but sometimes they aren't worth keeping." She said glancing up ag him bit them looking back down at the ground. She stuffed her hands in het pockets, feeling all the items she had hidden in there, and the books wasn't the only thing she kept inside of her jacket.
(I'm sorry that my replies are a littler short. I am using my ipod because school got back in and my dad wanted my laptop so it didn't distract me.)

Rookson looked at her, she had a point, some weren't worth keeping, but he was pretty sure most secrets didn't involve gangs, fighting for money, and illegal activities. If most of them were then he feels sorry for the world. He tries changing the subject to lighten the mood a bit, trying to concentrate on what he was going to say to her grandparents. He scratched his chin for a second before diving his hand back into his pocket, and saying, "I really have no idea what I'm going to say to your grandparents", hopefully Zoe would understand, Rookson wasn't much of a people person anymore. Although he could act very nice and kind if needed, it would be a mockery of his true being, but it would be believable, he rarely faked it though.
