Late at night your character hears a noise outside their (house/apartment) only to find a humanoid creature collapsed on the ground with an injured leg. They seem nearly unconscious and in no effort to attack your character so they decide to temporarily house them despite the risks.
Your character has taken in a government experiment and now has to teach it how to be human but keep it hidden from it's powerful pursuers as well.

Plausible legends of ancient magic, but current magic is not common.
Near future, perhaps cloning and genetic manipulation
Combat is woven into the storyline and could come to the forefront if the characters seek it out.
Some romance is possible, but the overall plot is more important.
