Y/c is a wizard or sorcerer, any sort they are a very powerful magic user! Perhaps even a professor at a top magic school or even a grand archmage!
Years ago they were close enough with another that one could consider them best friends. . . However this friend would be cast out from the magical council due to their rather odd demeanor and interest in quite unsightly things.
One day however the Council is met with a troubling dilemma. You see this magic user, this former best friend of yours has gone missing and they left behind. . .a child. A child who's magical ability is only surpassed by the mystery behind its seemingly lovecraftian bloodline. . .

Magic is very common. Magic-tech, grand floating islands, forests that sing, magical creatures may be an every-day occurrence.
Industrial revolution
Combat is expected as part of the storyline but it won't dominate the plot.
Romance isn't outright desired, but can happen if we decide the characters are perfect for each other. The romance won't be important to the overall plot.
