By at least your 18th birthday, you are given an ”aura“, or a specific scent that only your soulmate can experience. It's always a sweet, attracting scent, never been anything else.
You live in modern Tokyo, Japan, the streets vibrant and colorful with people always walking about. You have never smelled anything yet, even just as you turned 18. Maybe your soulmate wasn't here... Maybe they were somewhere in another city. Maybe region. Maybe even country...
That's besides the point however! Today's news were.... especially interesting. A ninja had recently been spotted around your neighborhood but slipped out of authorities grasp. Your area had been warned to be careful, as they had been spotted to be constantly armed.
You were simply walking out about today when you smelt the stench of smoke drift past you. Was there a fire somewhere? Your eyes darted around frantically. That's when you saw it. A silhouette of a man in a kimono, sword on his back.
No magic at all.

A peaceful setting, but with a chance for small fights and struggles to break out on a very small scale.
Romance will be a major feature of this plot.
