"Wow Twilight, is that... is that what you're wearing for Nightmare Night?" Spike inquired of Twilight incredulously. She was dressed in a trenchcoat, fedora, and old-timey spectacles.
"That's right Spike! This year, I'm going as a mythical "kon-goor". Legend has it that a primitive race of bipedal creatures once held events like Nightmare Night, where they would don fanciful outfits, but all year round, in different places all over the world! Isn't that exciting?" Twilight beamed with pride, both at her hoof-made costume and her historical knowledge.
"Uh... sure, I guess. But what's that smell?"
"Why, that's authentic Kon-Goor scent! In preparation for their sacred celebrations, they would undergo a kind of ascetic ritual in which they went without basic necessities, especially hygiene. Some would go without showers for weeks at a time! Of course, since ponies always naturally smell like flowers and dessert foods, I had to simulate this. I mostly used rotting onions, limburger cheese, and waste runoff from Sweet Apple Acres. According to my studies it's accurate to within plus or minus three percent of the real smell!"
Their conversation took place on the ground floor of Twilight's library, surrounded by bookshelves. The open area in the center was cluttered with the aftermath of Twilight's costume construction - discarded cloth, sewing thread and needles, books on the ancient Kon-Goors, and the like.
Little green wavy lines served as a visual verification that Twilight did, in fact, stink.
Spike was dressed as a phoenix.
"Gosh, I can't wait to see everybody's costumes tonight! I bet they're ten times as great as last year!"
Spike wondered to himself how Twilight stayed so enthusiastic about everything, all the time. Equestria hadn't invented methamphetamines yet, after all.

In an alternate universe where this character exists in Equestria, Dolly was excited about heading out for the first time in Ponyville for Nightmare Night. For the holidays she was staying with her second cousin, Cherry Berry, and made her very own costume earlier that week.
She was adjusting the wig and admired herself in the mirror. She was Twilight Sparkle's biggest fan and had dressed for the occasion! Hers wasn't made as nicely, after all she was no Rarity, but people would recognize her. Hopefully.
She called out for Cherry Berry. "Come on, we have to go or all the candy will be gone!"

One moment there was an empty space in Twilight's library. The next moment, there was a dark figure, towering well over six feet. It was like the shadows had coalesced into this squid-faced monstrosity, standing silent beside the book shelves. It raised one almost skeletal hand, moisture glistening on the sickly purple skin, and pointed at Twilight.
Beside the creature, a black bag appears, already partially filled with candy. The bag floats silently toward the ponies, stopping a few feet away.

"WAAAUUUGGH!" articulated Twilight. She recoiled from the horrorterror in her living room, and skittered backwards on her haunches at high speed. She collided with a bookcase on the far side of the room. It wobbled and spilled most of its contents, burying her under an avalanche of plot.
Spike very much echoed her sentiments. He jumped right out of his costume and out a window, his screaming fading gradually with distance. His costume crumpled to the floor a few seconds later in accordance with cartoon physics.
Across town, Cher Bear bedrudgingly dragged herself out of the house, following her "friend" (yuck). She held a plain brown paper bag in her teeth with the word "CANDY" scrawled in huge hateful letters across the front because that's the kind of friendly and social pony she was.
Across town in a different direction, three unicorns were also preparing for nightmare night, but in a different manner entirely.
"It is settled then. Finally we shall have our revenge on that blasted purple unicorn!"
