I've had horrible luck scouring the internet for some reason, but I've run across a weird issue with my laptop.

It's an Asus notebook, just got it this summer, and it has a Smart Gesture Feature--use the touch pad to scroll, minimize, change tabs, &c all with finger gestures on the touch pad.

But for some reason today it started lagging, badly. When I use the gestures to do something, mostly scrolling along a page, it takes a few or several seconds to get a response instead of moving or changing instantly. It also FLINGS the page up or down far beyond whatever I wanted to scroll past, as if I'm grabbing it by the metaphorical roller and throwing it about. It might be a simple solution to fix this, but the internet is proving difficult in telling me why it's happening and what exactly should be done to help me.

It's not a huge issue because I only use it to scroll, which I can do with the arrow keys; never the less I find it quite annoying. Does anyone by some small chance know what's up and what can be done to fix this?

There are two things I can think of!

If you can find a settings control panel of some sorts, there might be a configuration setting. Maybe it'll be in the control panel, or maybe there's a folder for it on the start bar. Somehow, for no reason, the settings might have been changed.

Maybe the drivers are outdated. Go to the Asus website and find your model. See if there are any drivers related to the Smart Gesture and redownload them!

Thanks for the help, Claine!
I'm making dinner right at this moment, but I'll go look into your suggestions in a bit and post back on how it goes! <3
oh man... i have an asus notebook that i got in august and i can never get it to scroll on the mouse pad. my roommate tells me to use 2 fingers but it never works for me... luckily i have touch screen so i end up using that instead x.x hope you figure it out!

...Alright, no luck. I'm rather computer illiterate, despite what my parents claim, not feeling 100% in general, and I'm wandering into territory I'm mildly unfamiliar with (finding my model & the appropriate driver, though why on earth is the driver the computer came with outdated if I haven't updated said computer?)

No biggie, I can just use the arrow keys to scroll about or attempt at a later date.

Edit (Nov 13th 2013)

Double post, le gasp.

So here's my problem-- the one on my end, with my human brain and wee human fingers:

I can't make heads or tails of the technical fiddly winks of drivers, installing things, &c. Yes, I can DL and install programs, but when the ASUS site tells me "You need to check X, Y, & Z and then read the rules and laws for A, B, & C before you do R, F, & G", I tend to panic and shut down the idea of fixing whatever my issue is.

To the nontechnical person that is me, everything sounds terribly complicated. You're looking at the woman who accidentally deleted one of the drives of her old laptop at age 18 after an unpleasant go-around with a very nasty virus infection. :c I am terrified of trying to fix stuff on my own because I have little grasp of the technicalities that make a computer run, and ASUS' site isn't helping matters.

Is it possible to go into the task bar, end the process of ASUS Smart Gesture (there's a few: ASUS Quick Gesture Exe, ASUS Quick Gesture Exe (32 bit), ASUS Smart Gesture center, ASUS Smart Gesture Helper, & ASUS Smart Gesture Loader), reboot my laptop, and let it load back up?

Hey guys!

So I'm afraid this doesn't really help, reeno, but Windows 8 updated last night and somehow that must have fixed the Smart Gesture for me? It's working today.

I did have a couple of chats with some friends. One suggested it was a latency issue (essentially lag, from what I understand), but I got lost in the sea of drivers and programs to fix. Someone on youtube made a video about how to fix a freeze-after-hibernation, but I'm not sure if that would help either. I'm sorry I'm not much help myself, but it appears to have fixed itself on my end!

Those are the best kind of fixes! XD

Haha, agreed! I may not have learned much (as a technician would), but ah well, whatcha gonna do? XD
