Dunno about the trees. Steel is made at the smelter; iron and coal in the top two slots, wood or coal to burn in the bottom slot. Folks suggest using wood for the burning since it's apparently more difficult to get coal when more people are around.

To forge iron tools, go to the anvil instead of the work table.
