I think demand would be lower if we were better about keeping the monsters clear 
In your inventory, you can place items along the top row and highlight them by clicking them. After that, you can click the down arrow and they'll be dropped near you.
Same method if you want to split a stack of items, but you click the split arrow icon instead.

Just found out: Click "E" and a grid appears. Once you have your square in a good place, comfirm with "E."
So the same as placing the tables and stuff. Cool.
