The morally-grey contracts were the worst. When you take out a commission that you know is right, you know that your enemies are in the wrong. And when you're strapped for cash and need to take a shady job? Then you know that your opponents are righteous and it gives you motive to back down in a stand-off. But hits like this...?
Ch-tkt hissed through his fangs. Here he was, one arm outstretched before him, particle core set to cannon-mode, palm of his bionic hand fully open as whirring components span around in the internal barrel to maintain the charge required to fire at a moment's notice. Opposite him, the other mercenary. Gun in hand. One wrong move, and a firearm was destined to be discharged.
Ch-tkt knew that reaching for the vocabulator sensor on his chest would appear suspicious. Likely get him shot. Negotiation was off the table, then. Much could go wrong trying to speak a language one could barely pronounce without mechanical aid. Plus, there was an image to uphold. Gurgling incoherently? That would be an embarrassment.
Thus, Ch-tkt resorted to communication through tone. Though the chittering that left his mouth was incomprehensible to anyone not knowing his native language, it was very clearly a warning. He wasn't about to let this job go. No doubt his counterpart felt the same. In all likelihood, they were destined to remain like this until an outside influence interfered.
Thankfully, the wait was not long. A rockslide from the adjacent cliff threatened to collide with the two temporary adversaries. Ch-tkt had an advantage in this situation. His perfect peripheral vision allowed him equal visual focus to anything that fit within his sensory cone. And given the way his eyes bulged slightly out of his head, he practically had a full half-sphere of eyesight within which he missed nothing. He could stare straight ahead of him without missing a moment of the avalanche of rocks flowing swiftly toward him. His opponent didn't seem to share the same luxury. All it took was a momentary distraction, and Ch-tkt made his move.
As the impending rockslide stole his adversary's attention, Ch-tkt lowered his posture, then sprang upward on his three powerful legs. He leapt clean overhead, showering a series of charged particle blasts within the vicinity of but not directly at his opponent; effectively pinning her down and preventing her from counter-attacking. By the time Ch-tkt was on goal to land, the rockslide's arrival was imminent.
Speed was now a necessity. And something Ch-tkt did not have with regard to simply running. It took a series of powerful leaps to hop free of the hazard - and in the direction he needed to go. Whilst he had no doubt his adversary was experienced enough to also escape the situation, he knew that for now, he had achieved a victory. But knowing any good mercenary, he wasn't home-free yet. In all likelihood, he would be seeing her again before this job was over. And he relished the challenge.
