Since 2am is THE TIME to post up topics at RPR, lets get a new one going:
Now I know we have some Pokemon fans out there somewhere, and I'm sure quite a few of you ended up getting either pokeman X or pokeman Y. Personally, I got X and the only 3ds that my game stop had left was a special edition red Y version, so that was kind of cool.
So, rpr, my question to you is this: What are your thoughts on this phenomenon? Is it something you enjoy? Is it something you despise, much like your inlaws? Or, perhaps, do you simply not care one way or the other.
For more serious players, how long have you been playing? Gen I guy checking in, started with Blue.

Been playing since Gen 1. Blue->Yellow->Gold->Crystal->Emerald, and thats where I stopped. I'd go and play the remakes but other than that I just wasn't really invested into buying a DS or 3DS. However with X and Y I finally broke down and got a 3DS, it was well worth it.
Also what "phenomena" are you speaking of?

The phenomena I was referring to was just the sheer inertia the Pokemon series gained over timed. Its not for everyone, but EVERYONE has played it at least once.

I have only ever played... Silver? I think? I had a little B&W gameboy from the dawn of time that I would take with me on plane trips. So every six months when I flew home/back from college I would play.
Unfortunately, in the interim, I'd usually forget where I was in the game or what my quest was, so I had to start over, and over, and over, and over... So I fear I never got very far!
But it is interesting that I was never a fan and at certain times of my life actively disliked the show and associated movies, and I still played one of the games and had a good time with it.

Oh lordy, I think I have games from every gen:
Blue, Yellow --> Gold, Crystal --> Sapphire, Leaf Green --> Diamond, Heart Gold --> Black, Black 2 --> X
Along with PokePark Wii 1&2 and Rangers: Guardian Signs. I freakin' love Pokemon to utter death and wouldn't give it up for anything.

I've played every generation except for 3, for some reason. I guess by the time I got around to buying another game, gen 4 was already there.
Blue, Red, Yellow --> Silver --> Platinum, Heart Gold --> Black, Black 2 --> Y
I also have both the stadium games back on the N64, and I probably spent 50% of my youth on those games alone. And then there's the pinball and tcg games for the GBC. Also partook in the actual TCG way back when it first made its intro (Before gen 2 was even there). I've long since given up on that, though. Guess I'm not much of a card collector, and I found MTG more strategically challenging.

Never played it. #hipster
I've played since Silver. Then I played Sapphire, then Pearl, then SoulSilver (as homage to my first game), then White, then White 2. I'm planning on getting Y.
For some odd reason, when I was a toddler playing Silver, I somehow beat the Elite Four. Nowadays, when I replayed it, I couldn't even get past the bug-type gym. Did I lose some premature Pokémon skills or something over time? :o

I didn't care for Pokemon for the longest time. The anime looked and sounded ugly to Little-Grace, and though I liked Team Rocket and Meowth and the various Pokemon they'd come across, I couldn't stand Ash. My sister and I saw the movie in theaters with our grandma, though, and I did like the weirdly dark movie with the Entei and Unown just because it was SO different from what I had expected up to that point.
I never had the cards growing up, either. They were banned from our school after they took over our playground and classrooms. It was basically the episode of Recess in which Ajimbo took over, and I was TJ running around with the kickball and wondering what had gotten into everyone. That episode wasn't exaggerating.
It was about a year ago, though, when I picked up a working copy of Yellow just to see what it was all about. No hype, no anime, no fad, playing on my brick of a Game Boy, and...I really really liked it. And then my fiancee at the time revealed himself to be obsessed. Turns out he and his friends were The Guys kids came to to finish their games when they were in elementary school, so he knew ALL the cheats (and was frustrated when I had Yellow, as they'd fixed most bugs by then), and ALL of the side-quests, and we finished that game together.
So long story short, I've passed the first ending of SoulSilver (which is almost TOO long), am cuddling my Umbreon and Jolteon dolls, and am saving up for Y and something to play it on, right now.

Im pretty sure I played one of the first three, but the oldest game I can find now that I played is Yellow (Pikachu outside a Pokeball? YES!)
I went Yellow- Gold, Silver and Crystal-Ruby and Sapphire-Diamond and Pearl - White.
I've been meaning to try out White 2, but I've not got around to it, and I don't have a 3DS so X and Y are out, for now at least.
Oh! And I had a hell of a lot of cards, including Mew which I got from the DVD release of the first movie, but I never quite got into the card game... though I did buy this Pokémon trading card game on the computer that was actually very fun, it's just that none of my friends were really big into Pokémon. If only that old computer game would still work.. sigh... for some reason my fondest memory of the game is the girl trainer character that does the tutorial and battles with you sometimes... odd.

Wow where to begin. Pokémon is a franchise that means a lot to me, it was the first franchise I was most definately a fan of and that has never truly stopped being the case. Sure, there were times I was less involved in pokémon, but since Red and Blue released in Belgium up until this day I have been a huge Pokémon fan.
Short version
I'd call myself a semi-gen 2 guy as I feel Gold and Silver are the first games I experienced. I'm really fond of X and Y so far, the most connected pokémon game by far.

The Long story
GENERATION 1
My first game was Blue, also one of the first games I got for my gameboy. As a little Belgian I didn't understand a lick of English so for a long time the game was unplayable for me, although I did watch the anime faithfully and even collected the TCG. I still have an entire box filled with old pokémon fanzines from back in the day. It was when I met some kids with parents who were surprisingly internet-savvy when I truly came to understand pokémon, but it was not yet time to really play it. Along with explaining how to use the boxes to store pokémon, they also taught me about MissingNo and how to use it to get your pokémon at level 100 and get an unlimited supply of master balls.
Long story short, I cheated my way through Blue several times, I got extremely good at doing this fast. I remember once finishing the game within an hour by exploiting the missingno-glitch. As fun as this was in its own right it also meant that I never truly played those games the fair way, even when I got Yellow where the glitch no longer worked, I just traded my overleveled pokémon over to the game and still cheated my way through that game as well, albeit to a somewhat lesser degree.
For a while we no longer had cable television so I couldn't watch the anime, an uncle of mine recorded all the episodes for me though so I still watched season 1 to the orange islands multiple times. The first movie I first watched on VHS, but the second movie (incidentally my favorite one to date) I watched at the day of the premiere, that was a cool moment I'll never forget.
GENERATION 2
This is, in my eyes, my true first pokémon experience and one that has stuck with me to this very day. Sure it was possible to trade from Gen 1, but it was way harder and only unlocked late in the game. This meant that I was forced to play through this game (Silver version) the fair way, which I didn't mind as I had hyped myself up the months before the release and was glad to experience every second of it. I also had a slightly better grasp on the English language so I actually knew what the NPCs were saying to me, in broad lines.
Pokémon Crystal was of course, even better! That game is without a doubt the one I played the most of all, exploring every nook and cranny, surfing between Cianwood and Olivine over and over again, always discovering new stuff or trainers I hadn't fought yet. For me it was a truly magical experience, fighting dudes with my typhlosion felt awesome and cool and to date my favorite region is still Johto, without a doubt thanks to all the time I poured into the crystal.
The second generation was less kind to me when it came to the other aspects of pokémon though. It took several years for the Belgian network that aired pokémon to pick up the new Johto episodes. Meaning that halfway into Johto all my uncle saw were reruns and thus, even when the anime finally picked up again, I'd forgotten about it for the most part. I managed to watch these episodes a few years later, but it no longer as faithfully as before. The pokémon movies also went mostly forgotten. I did not like the third one for some reason and from the fourth onwards it was nearly impossible to find them on VHS, meaning I only saw those movies a gen later.
GENERATION 3
Generation 3 was less involved than the previous generations for a while. I only got Sapphire sometime after release after playing a demo in the store. This was during my teen years so my attention was hard to keep and Pokémon certainly didn't dominate it. I stilled played through all of Sapphire and later Emerald. I got myself pokémon colosseum but never actually touched that game (I actually only finished it this very year) What was enjoyable to me however were the Fire-Red, Leaf-green remakes. This was for me the first time I really experienced the Kanto region the proper way, but even this wasn't really enough.
I watched the anime rarely. Even though it took me a while I still watched every episode of generation 2 (ironically mostly in this era) but certain turns in the anime made me quickly despise it for the same reasons I still can't watch it for long these days. Ash Ketchum, the guy I had seen develop over 200+ episodes and two entire regions was suddenly a complete and utter newbie! And that was after abandoning every single cool pokémon of his in favor of the new ones. I couldn't stand it and didn't watch the anime for many many years.
What generation 3 did give me however was a vast array 'favorite pokemon'. Up until that point my 'favorite' pokémon changed every playthrough, there was no pokémon I truly forged a connection with. Even Typhlosion became a favorite of mine years later through nostalgia. This pokémon was Ninetales, and by extension vulpix. I still have the ninetales that I trained back then.
GENERATION 4
Generation 4 changed things around slightly, but not by much. This was again a generation I was somewhat hyped for. Sinnoh looked pretty cool and Lucario was pretty alright, this was also the period of time where I first had internet, so I could follow the game through Serebii and even hung around some fan-forums during that era. Actually playing these games though never was really the magical experience I had hoped for. Sinnoh, although being the greatest region in terms of scope and variety, felt empty, I felt absolutely no compulsion to explore or find stuff out. It was a slog of a region and while Platinum was a lot better (with a more detailed story and omfg LOOKER), it really did not catch my attention.
The big change that is still, I think, the drive of my continued fandom today was not the generation 4 main games, but the remakes. Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver! These games I was hyped for like never before. I checked serebii daily for updates, it was incredible. More incredible were the months leading up to it though, in anticipation of the new games me, Copper_Dragon, Wizard, Earendil and some others decided we'd have a little pokémon rp, which turned in some of the most amazing RP I ever had and truly opened my eyes to how amazing the pokémon world really is! Of course when the games did come out I was still in the spirit of that RP, and named my Soul Silver trainer after the character I had made for the RP. Walking pokémon is still to date my favorite addition ever and I do hope that they do it again in the future sometime.
GENERATION 5
Generation 5 wasn't long off then and as with Soul Silver and Heart Gold before it I was extremely hyped for Generation 5. The pokémon RP started before was still going on too, albeit with less people. Awaiting generation 5 and the promises it made, the great story, an anime-season filled with awesomeness I pretty much 'caught up' during that time. I bought several of the side-games like Mystery Dungeon and Pokémon Ranger, I watched all the anime-episodes and movies I had missed before. Pokémania was in full swing again and Black and White did not disappoint.
It was interesting that in Black and White I bought both versions but it was not the first version that stuck most with me. I bought Black first and finished it, but it was in White were I began EV-training my pokémon and (as luck would have it) I even found a pokémon with PokéRus to help me with that. My White team turned into an EV-trained team of juggernauts and although I never entered any competitions it was awesome to have a viable party nonetheless.
White stuck with me so much that I also bought White 2 much later which is still, when it comes purely to story, my favorite pokémon game to date. The anime in the meantime was indeed (at first) as excellent as they had promised. It fell back into its old boring routine over time of course but even then it was still better than (anime) Hoenn ever was.
It was also during gen 5 when I began the Pokémon Rp Group on this very site, which is still going on today. A spiritual successor to the pokémon RP I ran before.
GENERATION 6
And then we're finally at generation 6. As I've written way more here than I intended to do I'm not sure anymore if I can really call this my 'favorite generation' already. It's certainly up there! I love all the generations one way or another, I'm not one of the people who has a strong dislike for pokémon of later gens either, I have favorites and not-favorites in every generation. What this generation most definately is however is the first time I can play pokémon with others. I've already done more online trades and battles in the 2 months x and y has been out than during all those years before. I have a team of not only EV-trained pokémon now, but also a few IV-bred pokémon, so the strongest one's I've had to date.
I can say that, sub-objectively, generation 6 is the best, it offers everything it should and more and I'm sure it can only get better from here on out!
