However, at the same time, heroes (and sometimes former villains) came out of smaller 'rifts' around the universe, sent to stop the evil forces by a superior force above all. Your world was one of many that were struck by this event, leaving you in fear until a rift behind you, and someone came out who might just save the world themself...

Magic is common.
Near future, perhaps cloning and genetic manipulation
Wartime/soldier RPs. Combat is a given and will likely be graphic, but there's the potential for non-combat "in the trenches" scenes. World War 2, Vietnam, etc.
Romantic themes are possible, but won't pan out. For example: unrequited love.
