I have seen "display cases" on some people's profiles that have no explanation on they got the items. Whenever I click on it, it just says what the object is, not what it means or they got it. What is the point of these?

They come from a variety of site activities. Some are purchased, some are awarded. Many are gathered by participating in Epic Week (every spring). Here's the full list:
