Unsure if they've been doing that, either. Can see value in it, but personally favor the other way if it has to be an either/or. If there's some way both could be represented - maybe a flare of background color for live hits? Or a soft highlight for "has been hit this round?"

I also wasn't a super-fan of the old effect being permanent even if you'd left the page open for two hours, so it might still be pulsing from a battle that failed hours ago
Would a force refresh each round be too much? Or maybe something that reads the time to create a countdown for how long it lasts?

If you do go that way, I'd suggest having that countdown be slightly shorter than it should be, like 1 or 2 seconds maybe? Partly to maybe avert that odd issue of the timer falling behind itself, partly to reduce human error still causing someone to join slightly too late.
