English Idioms: Good place to look at if you're trying to find the meaning of a phrase. Could also be used for characters.
Phrase Searcher: Works much like the previous site above, except if you need to look for the definition of the phrase quickly, you can use this.

My first go-to resource has always been Dictionary.com. It's got a thesaurus built in, so it's easy to find exactly which word I'm looking for.
For real-world names, mundane and exotic, I've used Behind the Name lately, for a good selection of last names, then the US Census Bureau for more names, first and last. For fantasy names of varying degrees, I've gone to Fantasy Name Generator for years.
Here's a big collection of generators for nearly everything you can imagine: ChaoticShiny. Don't know how often I use it, but it certainly is entertaining.
