Ode to Welcoming

Posted by Kim on November 1, 2016, 12:45am

It's the start of a brand new month. The welcomer accolades for October have been freshly distributed, and a shiny new batch of welcomer accolades, different from the last month and the month before, wait, glittering with promise, to be claimed by this month's welcomers.

If you are earning these accolades, you deserve it. You are performing a major service both to individual new members and to the community at large. Making sure that new members feel welcome, get their questions answered, and start to understand the culture here is a great way to give back if you love the RPR, and want to see it remain the amazing refuge of friendliness that it is.

To further support existing welcomers, and to encourage more members to get involved with welcoming, I've added a new panel to the introduction forums. It looks something like this:

The welcomer panel will help you track your progress toward earning the shiniest possible accolade every month, offer tips and advice for being the best welcomer you can be, and sometimes offer additional information like how many days are left in the month.

If you've never earned one of these fabulous welcomer accolades before, why not make November the first month that you are awarded one for being an awesome human being?

@Kim - That's great to hear! Thank you for all the hard work you put into this site. It's my favorite place to visit every day. ♡ And thanks for the tip~ I'll be sure to give that a try next time. :P

@Lexi - The feature you're describing is being worked on slowly. :)

The way I do it is that when I go to welcome people for the day, I just hold down ctrl and click all the welcomer threads on the first page of the forum. Then I go through each tab and close it when I see that I've responded to it/there's no responses relevant to me. That way I don't miss anything. :) I don't subscribe since it's too distracting throughout the day.

I delved into the welcoming crew for my first time last month... I met some interesting people! I'm extremely shy, so it can be tough to go out on a limb and break the ice first- or in a sea of many others welcoming them as well. (Seriously, the community here is so nice!)

I have to ask though, how do you keep from being overwhelmed? Sometimes there's just so many people you want to welcome, and subscribing can help keep you alert on the activity feed, but... when welcoming many people in one sitting, does anybody have any tips for keeping track of responses replying to you specifically, perhaps?

Something on the feed such as "SoandSo mentioned you in This One Post. (Meaning they used your name or directly quoted you, perhaps) could help make things a lot easier, since SO many people can and often do respond to the same post as you have. The last thing I want to do is welcome somebody and/or ask them a question and miss their response because I got overwhelmed on my feed. xD

I dunno, just a thought that might help in the future, if possible. ^-^ (Or... maybe it already does, and I've just never seen it happen. xD That could very well be the case...) Anywho, sorry for the mini-novel. Happy Welcoming all~ :P

I was a little late, so I didn't get to welcome everyone, but I am glad I was a part of it!
