New Push Notification System Released

After another day of maintenance, the new push notification system is finally in place!

This primary goal of this new system was to address issues of reliability. Only time will tell if we truly hit that goal, but our fingers and toes are crossed!

One of the other benefits of the new system should be that your inbox message count (in the header) will auto-update every time you receive a push notification.

The downside is that you're going to have to re-register your devices for push notifications. Go here to register your device for push notifications again: https://www.rprepository.com/settings/registerPushDevice.php

I regret that this may be a bumpy transition for some of you. You may have portions of the old system cached, and see unexpected errors when trying to re-register your device. In many tests, the fix to this was just a couple of good page refreshes - (ctrl-shift-r does a "hard" refresh in many Windows browsers that's stronger than a normal refresh, and you might want to bring that into play here.) If that doesn't work for you, you may need to submit a bug report and we'll see what we can figure out. :)

For those that are still not getting notifications even though you have your devices on the list, don't forget to check off the boxes in the settings since you may not have any of them on.

I cleared my cache on my Android phone in the Chrome Browser and it finalyl let me add my phone as a push device, but I'm not actually getting any notifications :/

For those on Android using Google Chrome (like me), you don't have to go to settings to access your cache:
  • On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app .
  • At the top right, tap More .
  • Tap History Clear browsing data.
  • At the top, choose a time range. To delete everything, select All time.
  • Next to "Cookies and site data" and "Cached images and files," check the boxes.
  • Tap Clear data.

You only need to clear this one cache to make it work. (No need to lose your cookies etc.) Worked like a charm for me!

@Riku & DazzlingDragons - That error means your browser or device can't support the push notification system right now. This is more common with apple devices.

I'd love to turn on notifs for my iphone, but I get the same error message as RikuNasane. I've tried clearing the cache to no avail; are there just specific devices it just can't work on?

You just have some old cache data that can't be deleted by easy means. The only way to get rid of it is by clearing through your app menu in your settings, and then it should work. I did put down a step-by-step process just recently on the post before yours.

I don't know if many people know how to get rid of their cache/data on their mobile devices (Had to Google it myself on how to do it), but for those that have trouble finding out how to do it (Those that have that firebase, or something similar of an error), I'll give people a simple step-by-step process. Please note that I managed to do this on a Samsung Galaxy phone, so your methods of deleting internet cache/data will probably be a bit different, BUT should roughly be the same.

1. Go to your settings and head on down to where you can get access to your app data. (For Samsung users it should be a tab that simply says Apps. i.e. Settings>Apps)

2. When you reach the app page, scroll down until you find your app that you use for your Internet, and click on it. (I use Samsung Internet, not Google; but this and the next step should work.)

3. Upon clicking on your Internet app there should be a tab that says storage, click on that to be taken to where you can finally clear your cache/data. (I don't know if you only need to clear just only cache, but I just did both just to make sure that it works.)

And there you have it. Of course by clearing all of your data you'll lose all of your cookies, saved items/tabs, etc., and you'll have to re-long into RPR, but after that you should be all set.

@Voldarian_Empire - Nope, if it just works for you, it just works. :) No need for it to be hard!

@SolarLoki & BRabbit - That error message is pretty much always related to caching in some way, as the number that's appearing in it is nowhere in the new system's code. Make sure you are clearing your file cache - cookies and history won't help in this instance.

I'm getting an error where I have to enable firebase messaging on my device to enable notifications. Android OS with chrome web browser app. Same error message as @Rose-Garden

I have one question, is the cache clearing necessary for reenabling a device? I clicked the link you provided and enabled push notifications and it just....worked. It felt too easy really. Am I just lucky?

Yes, clearing just the cache on phones has been very helpful to most users :)

A potential fix for those of you who are having trouble, especially on mobile, finding the Cache settings for the browser and clearing it solved my issues with reregistering my phone.

A previous user did cache, cookies, and history, but if I'm right, just the cache works, which is likely why Kim has suggested a more thorough reset on PC browsers.

Thank you so much, Kim! I had the same issue, but I found that doing a clear wipe of your cookies and cache worked perfectly! I took extra precautions and decided to nuke everything in my history just in case too.
