Darth_Angelus' advice on awesome kudos

Posted by Kim on December 4, 2016, 5:15pm

If you want to take part in the kudos-giving portion of the Festival of Being Excellent To Each Other, but you're not sure how to go about it, today we have some advice from moderator Darth_Angelus. For the last year or so, Darth has been the primary moderator reviewing each and every kudos that gets posted to the site, so he knows a lot about high quality compliments. :)

Here's Darth_Angelus on kudos:

One of my favourite things about moderating RPR is looking through the kudos section and seeing all the kind things our community members have to say about each other.

However, we like to encourage our members to elaborate on why they like the person they're writing about, so the rest of can see why we should get to know them.

To that end, I've written this helpful guide on how to write the best kudos your friends deserve.

Lets start with something simple.
Quote:
They are awesome!

It might be true, but it doesn't really tell us a lot. So take a moment to think how you can expand that statement. Often kudos praise writing, so let's work with that.
Quote:
They are awesome at writing engaging scenes!

Much better. With just a few extra words we've given the community a much better idea of why your friend is someone we should get to know.

There's no reason to stop there, we can expand it further.
Quote:
They are awesome at writing engaging scenes, I look forward to each new post to see how the story evolves. Its always a pleasure to roleplay with them.

And this paints a much more detailed picture of this great member of our community.

Of course, it doesn't just have to be about writing. Kudos can be about all sorts of things, from interesting characters, to being impressed by their character art. Perhaps you commissioned them to create some character art for you, kudos praising their skills means others will approach them too!

Perhaps someone helped you with the site, made you feel welcome or did something else that makes them stand out. These are all things we like to see given kudos.

It really is that easy, so the next time you're writing kudos for someone, think about what makes them so special to you and share it with us.
