Dover High School, Delaware 1870
On the sight of the "Sham Battle" in the midst of the beautiful grove Dover's first high school was built in 1851. Land was purchased from the Cocheco Manufacturing Company for $600 and the building erected for $15,000. A three-year course of study was instituted, but only students from the north side of the river were allowed to attend. In 1869, the Dover school system was consolidated, the inequities remedied, and all Dover students welcomed. By this time, 80 students were in attendance. At this period of time in American History, high school was not a right for citizens, it was a luxury to the children of the elite.

Cantwell’s Tavern
Delaware was settled by the Dutch in the 1630s, making it one of the earliest European settlements in the New World. For hundreds of years, people have been making a life in Delaware, and it did not take long for taverns, pubs and colonial restaurants to appear amongst the early Delaware residents. Cantwell’s Tavern first opened up in 1822 and runs as a hotel, tavern and restaurant for many of the local high school kids who's parents are well off. By 1870 the restaurant has been opened for almost 50 years of service. The quality of the tavern, restaurant and hotel is second to none as it is in the prime of it's business history.

First State National Park
First State National Historical Park. In Southern Delaware, the Historical Park includes the Ryves Holt House in Lewes, a 1665 home that is estimated to be the oldest house in Delaware and one of the 50 oldest structures in the country. Embracing a variety of historic locations in the northern and central regions of Delaware, the First State National Historical Park touches on tales that are central to America’s story including the debates over Colonial allegiances, and the crucial role that this new land’s rivers and natural resources played in the economic growth of Dover.

Dover High School Football
American football evolved in the United States, originating from the sports of soccer and rugby. The first American football match was played on November 6, 1869, between two college teams, Rutgers and Princeton, using rules based on the rules of soccer at the time. The game within a year had blazed across the nation, football fields being built in major cities for high schools and colleges to use as a extra curricular activity. One of those stadiums was built at Dover High School. It was a very popular hang out for many students and athletes.

Delaware St. Peter's Cathedral, founded 1796
Christianity in the 18th century is marked by the First Great Awakening in the Americas, along with the expansion of the Spanish and Portuguese empires around the world, which helped to spread Catholicism. The Catholic Church has been a presence in the United States since the arrival of French and Spanish missionaries in the 16th and 17th centuries. With many of the things going on in Dover with no explanation, many go to the church to speak with the priest in hopes of finding some answers, protection and even salvation.

Wesley College of Dover, Delaware
Nearing it's completion in 1870, Wesley College was a 4-year liberal arts college in the Delaware state capital of Dover and the oldest private institution of higher learning in the state. Wesley offered bachelor's degrees in 30 academic majors. During the 1860's the construction of the university began. During that period as the different structures went up professors were hired to teach and the final construction of it's last building was erected in 1873 during it's final establishment.

Dover Hospital
Establish in 1779, Dover Hospital was one of the oldest and first medical centers of it's kind. Over the coarse of the next 91 medicine would grow and evolve in partnership with the local university to expand into new forms of healthcare. It as this very hospital in which two Asylums were created to better offer the special needs that patients during this period needed. Those facilities called Asylums were places built to offer those with mental and emotional needs a safe place with the food and resources needed to survive. With no medical standards at the time, many of these facilities were allowed to do other things for their patients as well.
