Naming
How to name your troll: Trolls are not named the same way that towns or locations are (using Norwegian). Trolls consider names sacred and should be unique. They name children by whatever comes to their heads that sounds right, as if believing this to be a gift from the ancients. Names are often abrupt sounding, but not limited to abrupt names. (examples so far: Arruk, Ganuu, Mahi)
Names are followed by three letters of the name of the previous (usually) same sex parent (unless in the case of orphans). For example, the dead king and the prince. The king was named Baalrag’uut and so his son was named Buutar’rag, taking three letters from Balrag's name. The full name is formal when spoken, friends will call each other simply by the first part of their names.
Skin Tone
Troll skin tone depends on the race and parents of the troll. Troll skin has a base colour and often a tint of another colour. For example, a desert troll whose parents were both desert trolls, may have one sand-like colour for a base, and another sand colour for the tint of his/her extremities and cheeks. A primary and secondary pigment, so to speak.
The swatches below are just examples and guidelines, not limitations.
Desert Trolls
Desert Trolls have skin colours that match the various sands of the world. If it's a sand colour, their skin can match it.
Mountain Trolls
Mountain trolls can have any rock colour as their skin-tone, dark or pale (but never white). As seen in the second swatch here, too, they may have grey in various tints as well. Some may express reds as seen in canyons.
Forest Trolls
Forest trolls have a vibrant range of plants, dirts and clays. Greens, browns,
ruddy browns and ambers. Any natural shade of green is appropriate.
Mixed Races
Trolls are able to interbreed as they please. Race mixing is still a little rare but not unheard of, the communities simply do not cross terribly often aside from on trade routes and in the capital city of Dragerholde.
Offspring of two separate races will follow the same pattern. A base colour and a tint, except the tint may be one that would not normally mix. They may also have a mix of traits more commonly seen in one race than the other, for example a forest troll with a thick spiked and hairy tail.
P = Primary Skin Colour, S = Secondary Skin Colour.
Troll skin can take from either of the parents primary or secondary pigment genes to make up their own. As a rule the darkest colour almost always becomes the primary. The exceptions are in the white-sand and white-mountain varieties.
See below:
White expresses codominance, meaning that both colours are expressed and thus causing this diluted effect. When white is a secondary colour, it expresses itself as a very pale version of the primary colour and not as white points.
However, in the very rare case of a white primary colour and a coloured secondary, the same happens and the secondary colour is heavily diluted. Here we see forest green becoming a soft and faint green against the white, creating a very odd looking troll. Very very rarely these children are born pure white.
Note: I am less likely to approve your character if they have these rare traits, talk to me beforehand if you are set on this to avoid disappointment.
Tails
Shape and Length
Troll tails can be thick and wide (more commonly in beefy body-types, but not limited to them) or thin and agile (more commonly in leaner body-types, but not limited to these, either). They range in size, anything from a stumpy bob all the way to hanging as far as the ankles. The distance from the tail base to the ankles is the longest a tail can get.
Note: You MAY use these as a base to draw your spikes and hair over for your trolls, if you'd like. If you do, please include them in your character sheets! but it's not a requirement.
Spikes
Spikes AND Hair can coexist on a trolls tail. Spikes can be diverse, and numerous, as long as the spikes are not impractically long then most shapes and designs are fair game. Tail tips can even have clubs or clusters of spikes. Spikes can be anything from gator-like ridges to sharp, thin points. Thick tails are capable of thicker spikes than the thin tails. Desert Trolls more commonly have spikes than hair, Forest Trolls more commonly have hair than spikes, whereas Mountain Trolls are most likely to have a mix of both. However, any troll can have one, both or neither. The world is your oyster.
Hair
Hair AND Spikes can coexist on a trolls tail. Tail hair, like the spikes, is versatile and diverse. Tail hair can cover all or part of the tail, sprout along the topside or underside, or simply be a tuft at the end of the tail. In fact, the tail can be completely bald. Desert Trolls more commonly have spikes than hair, Forest Trolls more commonly have hair than spikes, whereas Mountain Trolls are most likely to have a mix of both. However, any troll can have one, both or neither. The world is your oyster.
Note: Tail hair can be cut, styled and trimmed, if your character would cut it short or tie ribbons into it, that's fine.
Body Types
Body Types and Heights
Trolls of either sex can be anything from extremely broad, to lean, but all trolls are generally very muscular. Sometimes there will be less muscular trolls but only usually in the case of excess fat. All trolls are large, and stand about 7-8 feet tall, though females are generally toward the lower end of that spectrum. Under 7 feet is considered short, over 8 feet is usually considered excessively tall. Tallness is admired and considered to be directly linked to greater strength. Troll legs are digitigrade and end in thick claws that can latch onto objects and branches.
Feel free to use the art for this section to draw your own troll, either via minor tracing or as a reference.
Horns
Horn Styles
Horns can come in all shapes and sizes. They can be a single pair, or up to three pairs in extreme examples. They sometimes have markings on them, as does the rest of the troll (See the Markings section). Many horns can be incredibly large, as long as the trolls skull and body is large enough to support them, or they can be short and stubby. Trolls do not have antlers. These are just a few examples, feel free to create your own!
Tusks
Tusk Styles
Tusks are relatively short as to not make life too difficult. As it is they tend to grow in ways that allow the trolls to rest their jaw shut as easily as possible, even if it means a small underbite.
Lower jaw tusks are the most common, but some trolls may have upper jaw tusks (as shown). Some may even have very stubby tusks.
Note: Tusks continually grow back throughout a trolls life if damaged.
Eyes
Eye Colours
Troll eyes are generally a boldly coloured iris with a paler shade for the sclera. This only really differentiates in red/orange irises where the sclera is more often yellow or pale orange. The eyes have a paler ring around the pupil too and the entirety of the eye glows gently in darker environments, but this glow is not so noticeable in the daytime.
When the pupils narrow, they slit instead of staying round.
Ears
Ear Types
Ears generally follow the same basic shape but may have a few basic variations in appearance. Some are larger than average and some are short and stubby. On some occasions ears may rest downward in a 'droop' naturally, rather than upright. All ears are able to swivel and move about, meaning they are often used in facial expression.
Markings
Markings
All trolls have unique markings. You need not design them if you don't feel like it, but it's good fun to do so. In their natural state they are a darker, duller shade of the trolls skin colour (see left) but at times of EXTREME heightened emotion or using dragon-related abilities, they will glow brightly the colour of the trolls eyes. In fact, even the trolls eyes will glow too.
