Just wondering if that's ever allowed, there might be a situation where a pokemon is given as a gift, or decides to go with the trainer without having to be battled, or is rescued or something. I'm planning on adding that brave buizel to my team, the one who bit the team rocket guy. Will I have to do a battle capture or not?
In certain circumstances, a Charm check can be made to cause Pokemon to like you, though Charm doesn't do much for already hostile Pokemon. Gifted Pokemon will likely start at a higher loyalty than wild Pokemon, but doing things for them that are positive may bring them around to follow the trainer.
With enough time, they may even accept a Pokeball. Currently, it depends on what happens.
