Carneiros was feeling it again, that pull he'd made Evren aware of. They'd yet to attempt to alleviate it, it was no simple thing to do without alarming both the fae watch and the court guard. 2am in the morning and he stood there among the trees in the snow, a stark black figure against all of the white... as close to the border as he dared to get, just beyond Oberon's rest. Plumes of warm breath escaped him into the crisp, silent air. For a time he felt although the only sound was his heart racing.
Around him he (and only he) could see the trees warping and reaching for him only to return to their solid state if he ever turned his head to look at them. The untethered unseelie simply stood staring up the hill towards where he knew the court guard were patrolling. Would anyone recognize him? it was unlikely but yet if he was here, it wasn't outside the realms of possibility that others had found their way here.
And on top of that, who was he now? Cassius? Carneiros? Cassneiros? Someone new?

Given the hour, Quinne felt there was no reason to keep the shop open. What meat remained was put away; so long as it could keep without issue and he headed for the forests atop the back of his horse; Trapper. Riding was exceptionally despite the lack of his dominant arm, but the horse was a well-trained creature.
He had almost passed by the lone figure, but upon realizing who it was, the vampire approached. He'd wait until he knew Carn noticed his approach to speak, as to avoid catching him off guard. "Good evening." Early morning? He didn't get off the horse yet, and continued to watch the Unseelie. "No issue with them lately, I hope?"
He made a small gesture to the patrol, mostly to keep that motion between them to avoid the fae watch from investigating.

Carneiros's sensitive ears picked up the heavy crunch of snow beneath hoofs quite a way off, so luckily he was well aware and looking back as Quinne drew closer. He took a deep breath and sighed out "No, no issue at all. They don't know that I am here." he admitted and turned towards his friend. With a flit of his wings he seemed to darken in colour, shrinking down like a shadow until a shrike fluttered on the spot in his place. He flew up to perch upon Quinne's shoulder, head tilting sharply to still stare up the hill even still "I wonder what would happen if I went. The city is having a hard time accepting me, but I do not think it would be any different up there. Seelie, unseelie, they're no less cagey.... and the elves are the worst." he chuckled deeply before puffing up and turning his head to groom beneath one of his wings.
"Why are you out here?" he asked between plucking downy feathers "A hunt?"
Rook — 12/26/2020
"Good." The flash of black feathers used to concern him, but those birds were no more. He remained relaxed as Carn took a spot on his shoulder and offered more slack in the reins for Trapper to shift snow around in attempt to find something to nibble one. "You'll only find out once you try, but it may be the same. Have you spoken to Evren about it?"
He leaned back in his saddle, resting his hand against the horn for a moment. "No, just going for a ride. It's been a while since Trapper's gotten real exercise, since I left him here while I was at the Tether. It'll be a while until I can hunt too."
Degu — 12/26/2020
"I have. She wants us to go. I worry that it may put her in danger by association but.... you try telling her no" he chuckled softly in a way that sounded proud or impressed by her determination over some things.
"Of course. Would you like company?" he asked, beak plucking at Quinne's hair momentarily as if including him in the grooming regime if only out of affection. "There are strange things in these woods, more eyes is always a bonus...." a pause "And did you see Lord Sealgair? It has been a long time since I have seen such an old fae... but we do like our hunts"
Rook — 12/26/2020
"As long as you guys don't vanish on us." Quinne said in jest, since he figured if one pair left, others would certainly follow. "If people want to hassle her on account of you, I feel sorry for them. Evren isn't a pushover." And he certainly could see her being much more formidable than a group of those guards.
"I don't mind." He smiled faintly, grasping the reins again and he nudged the horse forward who immediately complied. "Hopefully we won't have to worry about anything going after us, I'm fond of this horse." More worried for Trapper than the pair of them. "I did, though I didn't participate in the hunt. It was interesting to see our...new person win it with the competition she had. I feel some of us are getting a bit rusty."
Degu — 12/26/2020
"She isn't, by any means...but everyone here is quite powerful. You can feel it in the air... I've seen the dragons flying to the north as well, many of them bigger and older than her. I know she can hold her own, but I worry." he heaved a sigh, as best a tiny bird could anyway.
"Yes, I saw Max's boy Enfield out and about, i kept half an eye from the trees. I couldn't have participated, I don't want to attract the attention of an ancient like that." he shrugged his wings and puffed up as if shivering at the thought. "At least there seemed to be no catch to what he offered, a rare thing that. I'm sure the faewatch were angry, heheh. Serves them right, they nearly slapped me in irons as soon as I arrived, saw one of them waving around a horseshoe." he sounded grumpy about THAT particular detail, bobbing up and down as Trapper moved.
"I've been left alone since, though the guards keep following me through the city. I move from cafe to cafe sometimes just to shake them. I hope in time they ease up."
Rook — 12/26/2020
"Yes, but those dragons don't care about this whole thing or we'd see more of them." Quinne was curious about that group of dragons, but knew better than to go snooping. Last thing he wanted was to be turned to ash. "She'll be fine, you both will be. You've got the rest of us, too, as support."
As they spoke more on the hunt, he nodded lightly. "I hope next time it happens, he'll get a better chance at winning." The vampire had noticed the responses of those who lost, but had kept to himself during then. "A horse shoe? That's ridiculous, but...can't avoid nonsense everywhere, I guess. I had one of them call me out for being undead."
When he mentioned being followed, Quinne would stop the horse. "Is that allowed? You haven't done anything to warrant being stalked."
Degu — 12/26/2020
"So many of the shops in the city have horseshoes over them, I cannot enter...it's quite unfair. One lady did take hers down to let me inside, which was nice but still it's quite unkind....as far as I can tell the fae to the west have no interest in breaching the treaty. Then again there are always rogues like me....the old me would have wanted to destroy Thornmouth... seeing it the way it is sometimes brings back those old feelings." he turned his head to stare back over his wing towards the city "No matter where the fae go, the mundane try to crush them. Jealousy, a lot of it. Control too...you cannot control those more powerful than you so easily, so why not eradicate them instead?" he seethed.
"But I see good changes happening here. The king has married a fae woman, the policies forbid a lot of discrimination that seems to have once been commonplace... the city is adjusting. Maybe our presence will help, if we just keep being good to these people and making ourselves known perhaps we can play the part of our thread in Hy'Brazir's greater tapestry." he hummed thoughtfully.
"Who called you out?" he asked more curtly, flapping his wings "Mmm I'm sure the guards can follow who they want if they think the cause is justified...quite honestly after the run in I had with them when I arrived I expect they've been ordered to follow me if they spot me in the city. The people here do not trust the fae... I expect they're not particularly fond of vampires and therianthropes either. We can work on that."
Rook — 12/26/2020
"That's absurd, but people and their worries." Unwarranted ones, but Quinne had seen already how nervous mortals were about...anything. "It is frustrating, but you already know that you aren't like them. Don't give in to any desire to punch them, as nice as it'd be." 'Destroy' was a better term, but he didn't want to deal with eavesdroppers. "We probably will. People need examples to prove things are better, instead of going just by our word."
He continued along, nodding. "I hope we can do something, just so we can also have peace of mine. I am so tired of it, and dealing with my frustrations isn't easy." At one point, he almost humored a darker response to the discrimination. "I don't recall their name, but they're a big guy....I guess all the guards are, really. But, he's built rather well. Older sort, dark hair."
Quinne went on to describe his weapon. "I don't blame them for it. Vampires aren't a nice race, regardless of what we try."
Degu — 12/26/2020
Carn nodded with his vicious little beak "We will set a good example. It seems for now I have been permitted to stay in the city, I plan on keeping it that way. For all its faults it is a very nice city." he kicked off of Quinne's shoulders and flew up into the trees, flying from branch to branch over them "I'll keep this guard in mind" he called down as he scouted ahead "There was one like that there the night I came back. Big fellow...the one with the horseshoe. Kept inciting panic and alarm, it sounds like it may have been the same man... Kept talking to a younger man in faewatch gear."
Up ahead the bushes rustled and an iridescent black wolf stepped out into their path with shining silver eyes. It'd come so much out of nowhere that Carneiros' alarmed calls from above were too late. The beast stood in their path, huge and pensive as it peered at them. A closer inspection might reveal the fae-like antlers on its head.
Rook — 12/26/2020
"A good plan." Quinne sat up straight again when Carn jumped from branch to branch, raising an eyebrow. "It might have been, seems like something he'd do. He tried the same thing with Ganu's partner, inciting panic and whatnot." He wondered over the other person mentioned, though he decided it wasn't as important as Harpur.
"What is.." Trapper had jolted, and Quinne took a moment to calm the horse down, even if he only had one arm to work with. "...Can we help you?" The vampire asked, staring at the antlered wolf.
Degu — 12/26/2020
Carneiros quickly came back down to Quinne's shoulder and the wolf squinted at him, tilting its head before a womans voice came from the wolf's maw "You're getting too close to the border. the wolf nodded back towards the city "Move along. she warned and Carneiros kept silent, quite sure her true sight could probably tell he was fae too. He pecked at Quinne's hair with some urgency as if to suggest without speaking that they do as they're told.
Rook — 12/26/2020
"Is there a path we can take to continue our walk, instead of having to continue back? I'm only out here to take my horse about, not rush over the border." Quinne would ask, keeping it polite despite his annoyance. Carn's tugging of his hair hadn't gone ignored, but the vampire kept his eyes locked on the wolf-fae's face for the moment. Trapper had, thankfully, calmed down, but still shifted his weight more the longer they just stood there.
Degu — 12/26/2020
The wolf stands scrutinizing them closely for a moment, sniffing the air before snorting a plume of cold air "Carry on along these rocks, we won't bother you as long as you head no further west" apparently she'd deemed them honest enough to stay a little closer. She turned about and hurried back up the hill, kicking up clouds of snow behind her.
Carneiros let out a twittering gasp of relief "Sorry- I think so often of the veil guard of my old home, the fear of being taken away is still very real...I have too much here to ever leave. My friends, my family... " he watched the way the disguised unseelie had left a little longingly "I don't remember the last time I spoke to other full blooded seelie. It's funny, really, I might seem too domestic to them these days" he joked with a nudge of his wing to Quinne's neck.
"Maybe I ought to finally branch out, get a hobby or two."
Rook — 12/26/2020
"Thank you." Quinne offered just before she left and when she moved, Trapper jolted forward only to be stopped by the vampire. "Like the ones Dralt liked to threaten you with? I get it."
"If you are forced to leave, you won't be going alone." He pointed out, adamant on them not being split apart regardless of why. "Domestic! Well, do you want to be less domestic?" Quinne asked curiously, side-eyeing him.
Degu — 12/26/2020
Carneiros tensed at the mention of that name, looking away "They were only happy while I was under his control. I fear the terms may have changed now. Perhaps i have disappeared from their view, though. We are far from them now...very far." he flitted over to stand on Trapper's head, turning about in the horses mane to look up at Quinne with a sly head tilt "Well, a little.... I feel a sense of freedom now that I have not felt in perhaps hundreds of years. A little mischief wouldn't be amiss... don't you think?"
Rook — 12/26/2020
"It doesn't matter if they did, you're no longer bound to him or them. They aren't from here." Quinne said, as he adjusted the reins and patted the side of Trapper's neck. "I agree, I think you should give in to it. You are no longer someone's servant or prisoner, do what you want. Bring the kids along, even, they'd love it. Especially Evren's twins." The vampire pointed at, poking Carn's wing gently. "I know I've been giving in to things I enjoy, now that I don't have to worry about someone breathing down my neck."
Degu — 12/26/2020
Carneiros let out an amused trill "I am not sure I should bring the children along for this! I want to play with the faewatch..." he looked side to side then hunkered down "It would be so easy... the exact direction they'd never expect a fae to come from is the city." a bird like chorus of laughter escaped him. "Mostly made up of fearful humans and orcs too, the faewatch. Far too easy" but then with that he rose up and shook a few snowflakes from his wings.
"Its been wonderful to see you, Quinne... I should get back before Evren wonders where i've gotten to...I've already been out here far too long."
Rook — 12/26/2020
"That's fair, just be careful! Don't make us have to go on a rescue mission the first time you try." Quinne teased, brushing some of the horse's mane to the side. "Sounds like a lot of fun I hope I don't miss out on." When he rose up, the vampire slowed Trapper's gait to an eventual stop.
"Of course, tell her to come say Hi soon. I might need her assistance with an issue." Like a missing arm. "Have a good night, Cass...er, Carn." He turned the horse, deciding to head back for his own home. Trapper probably would prefer a nice warm stall right about then.
Degu — 12/26/2020
When Quinne fumbled over his name he shrugged his wings hopelessly "I don't know either" he said rather sorrowfully before spreading those wings and taking to the sky, he flew over Quinne for a moment "I will tell her! Have a good evening, friend." and then with that he would disappear, flying at speed between the trees until he was out of sight.
