Racing was a sport she knew very little about, outside from what snippets she heard upon entering the colosseum. People spoke of horses and bets, so Neeva made sure she had her coinpurse ready. It was loud, so she kept her ears drooped at the sides of her head to try to cut out most of the sounds and made her way over to the seats with a swish of her long tail. The looks she got were common place there by now, but even by anthro standards, she stood out.

Her well-tailored dress was held up a bit, so she could avoid anyone stepping on the fabric as she passed by, while her disfigured wings were bound together by ribbon. It helped keep them from being an issue as she walked about as well, even if she usually preferred to hide them. Snacks were nabbed up immediately, despite not being cake, and she would offer coin to those responsible for bets.

The horse she bet on was named 'Wildfire' and Neeva decided that name was proof enough the horse would win, even if there really was more to it than that. She flopped down on a seat, looking to those near her. "I picked Wildfire, it is a very good name and he will win." It didn't matter who would respond to her, just so long as someone paid attention.

Degu — 01/15/2021
Most of Harpur's time here was on duty. Today that wasn't the case. The humongous fellow sat perched on a seat overlooking the race with paper tickets clutched in his a scarred fist and a paper bag of flavoured mixed nuts in the other"Come on Hurricane! Come on!" he clutched his tickets even closer only to be hit with a face full of damn TAIL.

HE sputtered and sneezed loudly into his elbow once she'd finally passed, rubbing aggressively at his nose before shooting her a judgemental glare "Watch where you're putting that thing." he grumbled. The seed of spite had been planted, so when the woman spoke up about her bet he snorted deeply.

"Wildfire... really? Let me guess, you picked him because he had a pwetty name" he mocked with a little baby talk before smirking "Bet you didn't look at his odds did you? let me tell you, his name's the only thing good about him."

Rook — 01/15/2021
When Harpur spluttered about being swatted by her tail, Neeva merely blinked in his direction. "I did not see you." It was likely true, since she literally tunnelvisioned on other things, like the horses and the path infront of her. "Yes, Wildfire spreads very fast, and the horse will do the same." Just not as disastrous...hopefully. His baby talk had been met with confusion and the Chupakri leaned closer, squinted at his mouth. "You should not eat when you talk, you will choke and die."

At the mention of odds, she looked at her own tickets and squinted. "I don't know anything about these numbers, I did not ask them to tell me about them." Neeva would shrug, tucking the tickets in a coinpouch. "What happens with the slowest horse? Do they get rid of them?"

The spiteful air was either dismissed or unnoticed, because now Harpur would be the expert she prodded. "Tell me how odds work."

Degu — 01/15/2021
Harpur snorted "Wildfire spreads disappointment wherever she goes." but when she leaned forwards his eyes widened and his brows furrowed. He sat up a lot straighter "Is that a threat?" he snapped, not quite realizing she actually meant what she'd said.

When she asked about odds his brain hurt just at the thought of trying to explain them, they were something he'd just barely learned to sort of understand because he liked betting and now it came naturally...it didn't mean he could explain them "Uhh- " he growled "I'm here to have fun, not talk about numbers. Figure it out yourself" he snapped irritably and leaned forwards "Come on Hurri...cane..." not only did Wildfire pass Hurricane but so did Rockhopper and Indignation in a big way. He stared in disbelief before standing up.

"I BET SHARDS ON YOU! PICK UP THE PACE!" he bellowed down into the arena before dropping back down.

"Not after every fight, no. If the horse keeps losing, yeah....they terminate it."

Rook — 01/15/2021
"We shall see, it is a very good name." Neeva clearly felt that's all that mattered, but then he snapped at her and straightened which she looked confused by. "No, it is knowledge. I am just telling you that is what will happen." She shoved one of the agnolotti bites she bought into her mouth, chewed and...promptly shoved the rest under her seat. "Disgusting." Maybe some desperate animal could come eat it.

"I will ask someone else." Maybe, she didn't want to move yet. When Wildfire rushed forward, she clapped her hands together. "A very good horse!! It is better than yours!" Neeva barked out her excitement, though when it was mentioned the horse would be terminated, she nodded to that.

"It is good to get rid of the bad ones, they must make money. I wonder what horse tastes like, maybe they will let me know."

Degu — 01/15/2021
Harpur was practically wringing his poor tickets in his palm, gritting his teeth and staring on with utmost attention. "Yeah- yeah" he just agreed but it didn't sound like he was paying attention. Harpur was focused, this was the horse race that'd make it big for him.

"Wait-" he saw Wildfire actually gaining on his horse when it was in the lead "Wait no-" he almost pleaded hopelessly. Wildfire never won, she was a useless sack of shit that was probably due termination....

But she sped up past Hurricane and across the final finish line, leaving Harpur standing there with his jaw utterly slack in disbelief even as others around him cheered. "No... NO!- she NEVER wins! all the odds were stacked against her- the pay out is-" he shook his head in disbelief. He'd lost his money but-

"Just how much did y' bet on her...?"

Rook — 01/15/2021
Neeva would focus on the race after, too, since Wildfire took the lead and she held her arms up in triumph. "Yess!! Very good horse!!" She bounced up onto her feet, swishing her tail rapidly behind her short form. When Harpur looked on in disbelief, she peered down at the horses after they stopped.

"She probably did not want to die and be eaten, she has won money! For her rider, for ME!" She grabbed up her tickets, seeking out the attention of one of the workers. "Hm? Oh, I just gave them ten shards. I do not carry a lot of money, but now I will." For now, she waited for the money to be tallied up and got her share, keeping her large ears up.

"This is why one must always bet on fire. It is very dangerous."

Degu — 01/17/2021
Harpur huffed irritably "Bet on fire, just the sort of thing a cheating demon would say. You probably looked into the future or bewitched the damn horse" narrow minded, perhaps... but she had horns and was unusual... good assumption in his mind that she might be a demon. With her bet being a round number he was able to count his fingers for a moment before grunting "Five ten. Woulda been more if you'd had more" he said thankfully, not feeling so bad but 510 shards was still a LOT.

And he'd bet...well, too much of his wages so he was sour. He glared at the track as they paraded the winner around and people started to filter down to the stands to bet on the next race. "Let me guess, you're goin' to tell me you weren't cheatin? how about you bet on another race and we'll see if you win."

Rook — 01/17/2021
"I am not a demon! Demons look like you!" As far as she knew anyway. When he mentioned bewitching the horse, Neeva looked down towards him. "I have not even been near the horses. Anyway, I am a Chupakri." She figured he wouldn't know what that was, but she didn't bother explaining it yet. Not when he told her her winnings amount, which she had just accepted in another pouch and she held it to her chest.

"Now I have many. I can buy a little house, maybe, or many beautiful things for the room on the dead man's ship." She did like living there, especially with the access to the Tether easier with the portals. "How would I be cheating? I am not riding the horse." She moved back over to him and right in close, looking at his burn. "Hmmm. I will bet on Starshine, ten shards. A good name!!"

Degu — 01/17/2021
Harpur jerked his head back as she implied he looked like a demon, his eyes burned with rage and his lip curled back to bare his teeth "What!? How dare you-!" he snarled and a few onlookers nearby shuffled away quickly. He was uh, well known for his temper "Hmph" he snorted like a pissed off bull "Sounds like chupacabra to me." he grumbled, reminding himself he was off duty and maybe this woman was just childish or confused, he didn't look like a demon... right?

"Dead man's ship? That's where you're living?" he made himself aware of the ships that came in and out of the port, if only because that's how oddities like her got in and posed a danger to their way of life. "You could be toying with all sorts of things...perhaps luck magic" he said but went quiet as she leaned in too close and he quickly gripped her throat and shoved her back by reflex. He'd been bitten clawed and burned too many times "You ever heard of personal space?" he huffed, consciously touching the burn for a brief moment.

"Shut up and go get your bet." he stood up to walk with her to watch her place the bet to make sure no obvious magic went on, before betting ten on Hurricane again. Returning to his seat he watched the race and sighed as Hurricane kept falling behind, but at least it wasn't as far back as Starshine. "You're probably just withholding magic to throw off my suspicions anyway." he grumbled.

Rook — 01/17/2021
"What?" Neeva didn't understand the anger about it. He just called her a demon, and she had to correct him. It was only proper. "That's because you must have heard it wrong. It is Chupakri, but it is okay, a lot of people make mistakes when trying to say the name of my race." She didn't know what a chupacabra was, but she liked the sound of it. Maybe that should've been what they were called. "We are very special, we were made to be perfect and only some of us are. Like me, I am one of the best Chupakri even if I'm not elite. But Elite Chupakri are very stupid and only good for looking pretty."

She only stopped in the rambling there to ramble about the ship. "Yes, I don't know what the ship is called, but it is a very big ship and I have a very nice room. I can keep all my things in it." He grabbed her by the throat and shoved her, which she attempted to punish by seeking to shove a hand into his face. "You do not touch me like that!" Neeva yelled, only to relax again. "Personal space?"

Clearly not.

While Harpur probably wouldn't let that stand, she was none-the-wiser about possibly retaliations and she would give ten shards to the man working. "I do not have magic."

Degu — 01/17/2021
Harpur starts to look...uncomfortable. "Made..?" he sat up a little straighter, seeming unwilling to be so close to her in that moment. He uh, had a bit of a thing about constructs, a bit of a deep-rooted fear. "... How? Are you an alchemical construct?" he started to rise up partway out of his seat before the race even ended, like he just wanted to move on. His hand hovered by the hilt of his dagger.

Of course, when she shoved a hand into his face he'd aggressively gripped her wrist and bent it away from him in a way that'd hurt before letting go "Get your fucking hand out of my face before I put you in the stocks" he snarled and rose up "Personal space! It does what it says on the box, sweetheart. Keep your distance."

Rook — 01/17/2021
"Oh, yes." Neeva would happily explain, ignorant of his displeasure. "My kin and I were made with science, as to be the perfect servants for anyone who wanted to buy us. They used fleshcrafting and various magics, but probably also alchemy. I am not sure the process in how we were made, and probably never will, as my Creators abandoned the project." She said excitedly, looking to his dagger when he 'gestured' to it.

However, Harpur twisted her arm and she cried out in pain. Unfortunately, this also meant she was going to retaliate. She swung a set of claws at his arm and flattened her ears against her silver hair, cradling her arm after. "I will put YOU THERE! You are making me ANGRY!"

Degu — 01/17/2021
Harpur wasn't expecting claws to come at him, they cut into his arm (typical, as soon as he was off duty and not in his armor). He quickly reached up to the torn sleeve and cupped the gouged skin with a snarl of pain, hissing through his teeth. His eyes burned with the want to retaliate further, but there were other eyes on him and ... well, he didn't need to. He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath to find a cool, unsettling clarity before smirking. Some guards were already making their way up the stands and he turned away to walk past them. The two of them stopped at his side, one leaned to check his arm.

"I'm fine. Put her in the stocks, two days, no food. She's a construct, she needs to be taught proper manners." he said with that same calm and carried on for the exit, tilting his chin back and smiling cockily to himself as the two guards surged up the stands towards poor Neeva.

"You're coming with us! Captain's orders!"

Rook — 01/17/2021
When he didn't retaliate, Neeva decided she had won and she held her horned up while staring down her nose at him. It was then any authority Harpur held vanished from her mind, but he was soon joined by the two guards. "He threatened me and almost broke my wrist, I am going to your superiors. I will tell everyone, and he will be kicked from his job. If you touch me, you will go too - you are enabling someone who assaulted a patron."

It was spoken as matter-of-factly as Harpur had gone with. If they still went for her, the chupakri rushed away with a swish of her tail and any attempt to reach out for her would by thwarted by a lashing of those mangled wings.

Degu — 01/17/2021
"There's no need to make this anymore difficult than it has to be, we saw you getting in his face. Just come quietly and your sentence will stay 'short'" the older of the two men said and reached out for her wrist as the other guard climbed up the benches to get up beside her but she ran "Shes' resisting arrest!" chaos! patrons screamed or yelled to get out the way as the guards scrambled after her. There were others by the gates looking up in shock.

"Close the gates!" yelled the more organised of the two men and those down below began to do so. They grabbed at her and got struck painfully by wings. One guard was knocked over the benches to the lower tiers but the same man still pursued, trying to chase her down to the closing gates at the nearest entrance, all the while trying now to grab her by the wings or tail.

Rook — 01/17/2021
"I have done no wrongs. He has threatened me the whole time." Neeva headed for the gates, though the call for them to be closed was made. Their attempts to grab the swift creature failed, and she sought a part of the wall to try to run up, since the gates might be a lost cause. She didn't get all the way up, as she intended.

Neeva turned to face her pursuers, letting her tail drop behind her. "I know how guards work, I know how people like him work. He shoved me by the throat and twisted my wrist, then held his hand by his dagger. You tell me where that gets him and where it will get you. I am not stupid, he is like a berserker of my kind. Murderous, foul. Arrest me, but this will not end here. I will see to it that he will have no peace from me."

Degu — 01/17/2021
One pissed off guard finally made it up behind her while those at the gates reached up to try and pull her off the wall. One man, catching his breath growled at her in frustration "You want to try not threatening the captain? Three days, you'd best be grateful it's not jail time" he snapped and reached out for her wrists. If she didn't resist any further she'd be pushed around and against the wall so they could clap her in cuffs and re-open the gates.

The poor Chupakri would be taken to the stocks in the town square and locked inside them for the whole damn town to see and for kids to poke her with sticks.

Rook — 01/17/2021
"I am threatening his job, and yours. You are all treating me poorly and letting him get away with abusing me, I will not let that stand. I am not a servant anymore." She'd be cuffed and she continued to cling to her shards, though it wasn't until she was locked in the stocks that things got worse.

Neeva threw herself in a panic afterwards and fought against the bindings, which immediately put her into a painful asthma attack. It'd be a show that probably wouldn't bode well for the three either.

Working for someone was rather new for Jack, but it helped get him around without anyone growing suspicious if he strayed close to the home or shop of someone important. Simple rounds and nothing more. That night, he wandered the empty colosseum, both keeping an eye out for someone for his own personal gain and working. Ensuring nothing horrible was going on in the area wasn't something outlandish, he was sure, given how quiet it was and the possibility of someone attempting something was high.

He wore the armor properly, but the hat was purposely crooked and his dark was barely combed back. He dragged the baton against one of the walls, as to announce his presence as to avoid walking in on something he really didn't want to. His expression, despite the late hour, carried an almost sleepy hint to it.

Degu — 02/14/2021
The coliseum was a good spot for young hooligans to sneak into at night and play or trash things, at least it would be if it weren't being patrolled. Even one guard was a good deterrent. Way up on the high roofs of the coliseum a small black shrike landed, head twitching rapidly to get a good look at everything down below. Carneiros was out on a night flight, learning the ins and outs of the city, observing as he often did.

Carneiros spotted Jack, but perhaps falsely figured he'd be assumed to just be a confused bird if spotted, though if one could sense a mind nearby (hint hint) they'd certainly feel one within the shrike. He fluttered down to the lower levels, landing on the railings that sat in front of the front seats (aka the splash zone), tilting his head again to peer curiously down at Jack as he passed beneath him.

Rook — 02/14/2021
Jack was probably one of the better deterrents, though what he was probably not outright announced to anyone outside the group (yet, or perhaps, much). Concerning himself over it, though, was actually one thing that wouldn't be an outright possibility.

Carneiros arrived, and he paused in his patrol, so he could face the shrike. He'd slip his baton back into its usual spot and focus his dark eyes on his visitor's beaked face. "A good way to get about unnoticed. Imagine if you were a guard, all the things you could catch."

Degu — 02/14/2021
The shrike didn't miss a beat as the stranger rather unexpectedly turned to look up at him. If it was startled, the little bird did not fluster or flap in surprise. A disembodied laugh echoed eerily along the walls of the coliseum. "They wouldn't let -me- join the guard. But I do catch quite a bit regardless..." the shrike said with quiet mirth before hopping along the wall a little closer, albeit high enough to be out of reach.

"I'm sure a certain captain wouldn't want a fae among the ranks, either." More unsettling chuckling before the fae bird's eyes started to glow bright yellow, head tilting to try and get a better look at Jack and his aura ... because obviously the man had seen into him somehow.

Rook — 02/14/2021
For the moment, Jack kept his distance even as Carn came closer. He was sure the wariness was for a reason, especially regarding that Captain. "Pity that. But, it's not out of the norm for certain groups not utilizing real talent. Can you imagine how much could get done if they did?" It certainly would've made for quieter nights, even if the evening hour usually just consisted of drunks or kids sneaking about.

Nothing too concerning.

"It's not up to him, either. Perhaps once he retires, you can have a chance, if you remain in the city." There was still a few good years until then. The vampire's aura was dark, perhaps twisted, but that could be chalked up to what he was, right? If Carneiros looked too deeply into things, perhaps even in Jack's own mind, he'd be pushed out.

Degu — 02/14/2021
Carneiros felt that mind pushing back even without trying to pry into it, he left it... he wanted to change perceptions on fae, not make them worse. If being 'one of the good ones' was what it took then... sigh. He tilted his head the other way, his yellow eyes fixed down on Jack. That aura and the man behind it reminded him of someone ... "I suppose they don't utilize -your- talent either?" It seemed to be what Jack was hinting at.

He changed form, his body shimmering as it grew in mass until the winged fae 'lord' (by appearance only) sat on the railings looking down at Jack with those piercing eyes and rather modest, human clothing...simple black trou bound into boots and a loose purple tunic with curling gold trim.

"...Do you have family here in the city? you look uncannily like a good friend of mine."

Rook — 02/14/2021
"I don't think there's much they can't utilize from me, but I've had no situations that require better strength, speed or anything of the sort." Jack replied with a faint smile, and he shrugged, unconcerned. Quiet nights were best, and he could learn people better. As Carneiros shifted from bird to winged fae, the vampire shifted to rest his weight onto one leg.

"Purple's a nice color." Royal, and expensive. It meant Carn might be cut from better cloth, even with the paranoia that surrounded him. "I do not, haven't for a long time." Those sleepy eyes focused from the man's tunic back up to his face. "The downside of a long life like ours, if one doesn't stick around those with the same capability."

Degu — 02/14/2021
Carneiros' brow quirked high at the unexpected compliment, plucking at his shirt collar "It's a colour I'm fond of..." he lifted a hand, curling purple flames rose from his palm and writhed, twisting inside like a kaleidoscope before he abruptly clenched his hand shut and snuffed the flame out. "I might be a little biased" he smirked and pushed off the railings to float down to the ground with a flutter of his wings, landing beside Jack.

"Perhaps kin? a clan?" he started to walk with this stranger "Pleasant to find someone who doesn't immediately knee-jerk." he stopped briefly to offer a charcoal skinned hand for a handshake "Carneiros. I hope i'm not intruding... or trespassing! I haven't seen much of the coliseum yet." he looked up at its impressive walls "No doubt its seen some impressive combat."

Rook — 02/14/2021
"I like it, too. Far too expensive for my liking where I'm from. Plus, people tend to treat you differently if you're a commoner who dare put your hands on purple cloth." Jack said in jest, eyeing those purple flames. Handy! Down the fae came, and the vampire remained relaxed.

"Kin, yes. Sort of. We're not related through vampirism, but choice, I suppose. I don't do clans." Guard stuff he could get by without worrying too much, even with the discrimination from some wary of a bloodsucker in their ranks. He'd take the hand with a nod, and shook it. As expected, his hand was cold as ice. "If I knee-jerked because you existed, I wouldn't belong in these ranks, I feel. We're of the same sort of 'disliked'." Even if Carneiros had the fun of being treated worse because of other fae.

"I don't think there's a rule against wandering here, there's not much to steal. Plenty to vandalize, but I can't see you joining in with the kids and painting or destroying things." Jack looked away to the ring himself. "I wouldn't doubt it. I heard it has races, too."

Degu — 02/14/2021
Carneiros expected that icy hand so he didn't jolt at all, shaking it and turning to head on along the perimeter. "I suppose we are, a good thing then that the king here seems rather anti-discriminatory hm?" he looked thoughtfully in the direction of Castle Concord with a deep breath in, followed by a long, thoughtful exhale. Carneiros laughed when Jack suggested he might not join in with the vandalism "No, you're quite right. I expect it'd be fun to paint the walls, though." a little chaos was tempting, but he was better than that.

"heard? Are you new here then?" he asked curiously "Then again I'm still quite new here myself, I'm sure you heard about my arrival... I get the feeling all the guards did with the way they tail me around the market."

Rook — 02/14/2021
"Yes, but either people will follow suit or he'll be replaced by someone who isn't." Who knew what his heirs were like. Jack was sure either was a possibility, the latter moreso, but kids didn't always turn out the way of their parents. "I always consider giving them a chance to make something pretty, even if I might be the one who has to clean it before morning." That bit wasn't always fun.

"Yes. Didn't take long to join the Guard, though. Makes citizenship easy." The vampire replied, leaning into one of the walls. "Yes. You're infamous in a way, amongst those who aren't fans. But, I'm sure you're not surprised at this point."

Degu — 02/14/2021
Carneiros shook his head "Infamy isn't exactly what I'd hoped for but it's about what I expected nonetheless. The wings don't help" he flicked them and glanced back "I'm not from this world... I wasn't aware I was walking into fae tensions but nothing new there, historically on multiple planes mundane and fae struggle to co-exist. I used to be on one side of that fight after all...a long time ago." he was letting on small pieces of information, but nothing anyone could use in any specific way. Not to a stranger anyway.

"Perhaps you can put in a good word for me among the guard, it'd be nice if they eased off a little. Hard to buy food with them breathing down my neck."

Rook — 02/14/2021
"Better than being in the background if you ask me, you might have others of your sort going to you for help on how to handle it without snapping. Younger Fae probably." If any young Fae were about or willing to endure the hate just to try. "Just a thought anyway." Jack shrugged, listening quietly. "Yes, same hereml. But I'm used to all this stuff, just more looks and comments than fire atleast." So far. When asked for assistance, the vampire waved a hand.

"I'm in the same boat, sort of, but I'll see what I can do. Don't expect much, you'll find they have a habit of worrying themselves over whether or not I'm going to eat a patrolling partner in an area like this." He was amused atleast. "Makes patrols quiet, and I'm fine with that."

Degu — 02/15/2021
Carneiros smiled and looked towards the stars thoughtfully "I had never thought of that. Younger fae... I am still getting used to dealing with young people." Evren's children had been a good distance to practice on, but he still had a lot to learn. "Thank you for your insight, friend." He had seen that twisted aura...so the word 'friend' was used very loosely, he needed to know this man better before he could trust that the twisted and corrupt appearance within did not represent him as a whole.

He chuckled "Well...I don't blame those less powerful for feeling threatened, but it is wrong to judge based only on fear. I should continue my flight and then return home. What do I call you, should we meet again?" he asked as feathers started to burst from his arms and his shape began to change back into that of a shrike, flapping and hovering there in front of Jack's face.

Rook — 02/15/2021
"Well, now you've got something further to work towards." Jack said, as he reached up to take off his hat, dust it off and return it to its place. "Bunch of children around you on the regular?" He wondered if that was a new thing for this fae. "Fear often turns itself to hatred." The vampire remarked, amused.

"It's just Jack, my last name isn't so important - I'm far enough away that it doesn't hold much weight." When Carneiros changed back, he watched him a moment. "We probably will, I patrol a lot. You should tell me more about your people."

When the fae was off, he'd go back to sweeping through the coliseum.

Degu — 02/15/2021
"Yes well... I know all about that" he said in response to Jack saying he was far enough away that his name no longer held weight. Carneiros was happy for that fact, personally. "I wish I could tell you more, it has been a very long time since I lived among them. Perhaps we can discuss it over a drink..." the birds ethereal voice echoed around them as it rose up above Jack.

"Good evening... safe patrol to you." and with that he was gone, back on his personal patrol around the city before returning home to Evren.
