Another night, another petty theft. The window on the shop had been broken and a few candlesticks had been lifted but whoever had broken in obviously hadn't thought ahead beyond 'candlestick look shiny' and had only managed to get away with those. Harken sighed as he lit up a cigarette outside the shop and took deep puffs on it, blowing plumes into the crisp night air.
He turned his head and saw a light on in one of the buildings opposite before narrowing his eyes and sending a private over to knock on the door while he left others to clean up the glass. "Move the glass and get your dog over here" he called over to one of the guards who moved his dog closer once the glass was gone. The beast got the scent and slowly made progress around the area. He comforted the owner of the store, a poor shaken older woman and then walked away to take a break while his men dealt with the rest. It was a clean cut case, just some idiot who broke in, no witnesses yet either. They'd just have to see what the neighbor said, but Harken was trying to avoid being overbearing tonight, he let his skilled men handle their delegated jobs.
So for now he just took time to enjoy a cigarette, leaned against a wall not too far from the tavern under the light of a streetlamp.

Theft wasn't unusual within the city at times, perhaps, but the poor theft of a couple candlesticks was surprising. Quinne was oblivious to all of it, however, as he came out of the tavern Harken was smoking near. What commotion remained caught and held his attention, as he contemplated walking over. It was likely someone would stop him from getting too close, he was sure.
"Theft? Or vandalism?"
The vampire recalled the man from a few nights back, and while he knew what he was when it came to occupation, he didn't seem so concerned about the possibility that he might be told to mind his own. Of course, he did have reasons to be concerned, he'd likely mention.
"Did they get anyone, too?"
Degu — 03/12/2021
Harken looked up from the canal he'd been staring at and perked up slightly "If it ain't the fellow from a couple of nights ago. Don't have any of that coffee you mentioned do you?" he chuckled deeply, just joking of course. He did step away from the wall he'd been leaning on to halt Quinne in his path without so much saying it, it was the gentlest way he could've done it.
"Ah just a petty theft. Goin' to take a good look at it again once my boys n' gals are done asking around." he rumbled "No one caught yet."
He paused and regarded his cigarette for a moment before letting it hang at his side "Don't think I got your name the other night. M' Captain Harken, or jus' Harken to most. You didn' happen to see anythin' did y'?"
Rook — 03/13/2021
"No, but luckily for you, we're right outside the tavern here." Quinne suggested, and then Harken was infront of him, so his plans to go forward were halted as anticipated. "Seems a weird shop to steal from. Did they get money?" He would ask, looking up from around the Captain and to the man himself.
"Quinne Lawson, local butcher."
With the introduction out of the way, he'd continue. "Nice to meet you. Can't say I have, however, I came straight to the tavern to sit with a friend. Probably happened during then."
Degu — 03/13/2021
Harken shook his head "That's the strange thing, only made off with a couple of candlesticks. Did a lot of damage in the process." he grumbled, he saw a lot of thefts and usually they had more of an obvious goal in mind "Mighta gotten spooked." he shrugged a shoulder, he was going back to investigate in a while, his men and women were still scouring for witnesses in the nearby area and checking for signs.
"Butcher huh?" he took a final drag on his cigarette before dropping it and stubbing it out beneath his boot.
"Good to know, m' pa was good with orcish cuisine. Y' sell fish too or not?" he asked and slipped a few shards from is coinpouch, glancing over his shoulder and backing up to look down the street at his unit before trying to slip Quinne the shards "Do me a favor friend n' keep the change? you slip in there an' get me a strong black coffee? I'd 'preciate it. Tell em it's for me an' i'll bring the mug back" he said it conspiratorially as if he were doing a corrupt drug deal rather than trying to get a cup of bean juice.
Rook — 03/14/2021
"Or it's a kid. Kids do it for thrills, afterall. Probably got spooked like you said, and grabbed the first thing they could." He glanced to those already at work and rubbed at the back of his neck, while he hoped it wasn't someone he knew. Plenty of kids came running over to play with his own, lately.
"Only when Arron's working, you'd have to come around before evening." Simply because Quinne didn't want to work with it, and it was hard to comment about how it was 'unfortunate' they sold fish. When Harken slipped him some shards out of the blue, the vampire was confused. Thankfully, the Captain followed it up with a reason for this random 'deal'.
"Sure." He'd glance over to the other guards, only to head into the tavern. He'd bring back a decent sized mug, assuming the guy would need more than the usual amount.
Degu — 03/14/2021
Harken reached out for that big mug of coffee and groaned a very deep, orcish groan as it hit his lips. The heat didn't seem to matter to him, perhaps the tiefling in him ignored the way he chugged two big gulps of the searing hot liquid. He sagged back against the wall and let out an appreciative sigh, seeming to relax now that he'd had his fix. "Thank y', won't forget that, son." he reached out to pat one big hand down atop Quinne's shoulder in gratitude.
"Jus don't tell the others" he chortled deeply and carried on drinking, checking over his shoulder. He needed it more than they did anyway!
Despite being a bigger mug and full of straight caffeine...he practically downed it all in a startlingly short amount of time. He handed the mug back, or tried to "I owe ya...would y' slip this back inside for me, son? I'll get y' a drink next time I see y' to say thanks." he rumbled and then took a step back "I'd better get back t' work."
Rook — 03/14/2021
"Glad to help the local guard, you keep the headaches down at night." Quinne commented, amused, leaning into the nearest wall and he'd cross his arms. "Gods above know I might need assistance in anything in the future, if my luck follows me here." And it often did.
"Yeah, there's only so much running back and forth I can do."
He accepted the mug with his prosthetic hand and nodded, his own posture straightened. "Does this tavern serve, uh, blood? I've never actually asked, but..." Maybe asking a guard was easier than asking infront of an entire group of people. "Sounds like a plan, good luck and good night." Quinne decided heading home sounded nice, maybe the fire would still be going once he did.
Degu — 03/14/2021
Harken had already started to turn when that question stopped him in his tracks. He blinked and looked back a little sharply, eyes flicking automatically down to Quinne's mouth. He hadn't realized, but then Quinne wasn't the most obvious of vampires he'd met, some were so very easy to tell apart. "Oh-" he cleared his throat, looking like he felt a bit rude for the way he'd looked straight at his mouth.
"Yeah, um" he ran a hand through his hair "You can ask for it direct or if y' want to be discreet y' can ask for 'red wine' but y' gotta make sure y' touch your neck or your wrist with two fingers at the same time." he demonstrated and then offered a slightly apologetic smile. "Got a few like y' on my units, given m' nocturnal schedule it's not too surprising" it was more than that though, he was one of the less close minded captains, even supes could be wary of the afflicted such as werewolves or vampires.
"You take care, aye?"
Rook — 03/14/2021
Quinne certainly wasn't expecting the look his mouth got, but Harken wasn't human and that's usually the sort that gave him such looks. Although he looked momentarily surprised, it didn't come with any annoyance following. "...Yeah."
When the Captain explained a good way to ask, he nodded along. "Very good, thank you." He'd mention other vampires, and he'd incline his head. "I know of one, but he's an old friend. Didn't really make a point to learn of others." Mostly due to feeling strangely anti-social towards his own, but one person could be blamed for that.
"Always. Have a good night." Another glance towards the shattered store window and he decided to check on the butcher shop, even if he couldn't see someone going there.
Degu — 03/14/2021
Harken nodded and smiled before heading off. He entered the shop and got the rundown from his unit... the locals had heard commotion but no one had seen anything when they looked out their windows. How odd, not terribly odd. Upon inspecting the inside of the shop though he found a few tiny specks of glass on the floor inside and frowned. A dustpan set nearby had a few shards of glass stuck to the bristles of the brush and it led him to inspect the window itself. The wooden parts of the frame splintered slightly outwards.
After some further investigation he left the scene, only for a day shift worker to have to come back the next day to serve the couple who owned the shop with a court date and not the compensation they were hoping to gain through faking their own break in. Harken never felt good about it when these things happened...but it was his job. It was so much easier to go after actual burglars.
