The trip had taken them further and further out, but more for Tommaso's desire to see more (and now a need for Jack to keep them going). There were no close calls, but the Irishman didn't care for taking chances. It was near the mountains that they'd stopped, at an old Inn still run by a stubborn man and having seen better days. A good rest stop for people hunting or just exploring the area for other reasons. Jack sat alone, aside from the familiar canine (to those who knew the Grimani anyway) and with a bound book set on his lap.
It was well after sundown, and the staff (really just a waiter cleaning tables and a bored cook) seemed to leave Jack to his own devices for now. The dog watched them occasionally, wandered otherwise or sniffed at Jack's things.
The vampire, however, went through other maps, letters and added things here and there.

Home was something of a trek from the snowy mountainside. Niveus had decided to visit a certain pair of dragons higher up where the air was more thin and the terrain difficult to navigate. On his way back, however, it was all a matter of getting down the mountain and back to the forest where his home was. He didn't always stop at the Inn, it depended on the time of day, the weather and how he was feeling. That particular day Niveus happened to be feeling a bit lazy which meant taking a break for however long he felt, which could mean a half hour or many half hours. He was into his third half hour at present.
It seemed that in the short (was it short? Niveus had thought so, given he didn't like standing around outside with his genitals out when it was cold outside regardless of how tolerant of the cold he was) time it took to relieve himself outside and return, some new faces had arrived and established themselves within the Inn. Of course he was noticing the dog first and foremost, as dogs made him a tad bit nervous. Sure, he was a large creature and very likely could defend himself from any dog fifty or sixty pounds in weight or less, maybe heavier depending on how hard he was trying, but dogs, even the lowliest, smallest lap dog was considered intimidating and potentially dangerous for some strange reason. No use in questioning it of course. He wouldn't be able to answer you if you asked.
While Niveus preferred to travel by moonlight, the chill had Niveus contemplating staying the night, or at least until sunrise when the sun warmed the ground enough that the air didn't feel suffocatingly crisp to breathe in. It's not as if he wasn't dressed for the hill: he wore leathers and fur, judging by the shape of the face and ears, a large mountain boar of some kind. It was likely painfully obvious that Niveus was eyeballing that poor Grimani dog like a criminal card player not welcome in 'these parts'. He returned to his spot, an unfortunately nearby spot, where he produced his own book (a small guide of some kind) and began reading uneasily all the while eyeballing the dog that likely was minding it's own damn business. Oh Niveus.

Jack hadn't paid much attention to the 'new' arrival so much, but he'd got focused into his work for a bit and had zoned out at other times. However, when most of that was done, he'd finally realize Niv was staring at the dog as if it was going to be an issue. Best deal with that, right? Of course, he did wonder if the taller man recognized him from the City.
"Is there an issue? Owner's fine with the dog, and he's not going to go snooping for your food." The dog in question, however, had taken to laying around now and licking at his feet. "Unless you want him for something, then no dice there either. He's a pet of a friend, and there's plenty of hunting dogs elsewhere you can take with you." Surely that was it....even if there were suspicious glares.
Just incase, Jack whistled the dog over, who obliged with a lazy gait.

Niveus did not recognize Jack. Of course, why should he? He very seldom went into the city. Yes, he was something of a hermit these days, keeping to himself, foraging for and growing his own food, hunting, All he really came into the city for was... soap, oil, candles... not much, really. Things he didn't need to come 'round for very often.
"..." a frown, a pout, and finally a weak and awkward little grunt, the squeaky sort that conveyed signs of struggles to communicate. "I am sorry." the Frigan looked away, seeming visibly embarrassed. "...Dogs frighten me." he had very little experience with dogs, even having been on 'the surface' for this long. He just hadn't had many opportunities to be around them. He found many four legged beasts common among men to be confusing, disturbing and even intimidating.
Even cats. He felt oddly kindred with them, yet still treated them with a fear-based respect. "Are you a traveler, or from somewhere nearby?" Niveus felt a profound need to redeem himself to this complete and utter stranger. Being afraid of a dog that clearly was, at this time, not a threat made him feel rather daft after all.

That would've been a relief, but Jack continued to pay attention for any signs of recognition on Niveus' part, Normally using his abilities would've been his go-to, though he decided to play it safe for now. He'd used his abilities far too often lately and as ever, it took its toll. "You're good, I understand." He said as if sympathetic and he'd gather up his things, books piled up neatly with one used to hold the loose papers.
"He won't approach unless called, and we won't be here all night." That way, the tall fellow could get a bit of rest with his food. "A traveler, haven't decided where we're going to be taking an actual break, just here for a day or two. What of you?" Jack asked, as he folded up a map next and tucked that under his vest.

Niveus was oblivious. Perhaps enragingly so, but it couldn't be helped. He wasn't in town enough to know anybody. He had become quite reclusive, only seeking out his sweetheart. Everyone else had to come to him. Rude.
Watching Jack curiously as he tidied his things, Niveus wrinkled his nose a mere second, eyes vacant. "I live in the forest beyond the city limits. I stopped here on my way home from visiting someone." His ears and face pinkened at the mere mention of this someone but he did not elaborate whom this someone might be. It was very much likely that Jack didn't care. He hadn't any reason to, after all.
"Is that where you're headed? Thornmouth?" There weren't many places of import to go after all. The properness of this man also made him think he must be heading somewhere that supported such properness. You wouldn't find properness in abundance out in the boonies, after all.

Jack would've been pleased by that, but the less attention from there, the better. Atleast driving people away was easy enough. "Oh, very nice. I imagine there's some great places out there, nice and quiet. I've found a couple that were nice and out of the way, but only for temporary visits." When Niveus blushed, he smirked faintly. "A close friend, then." Or deeper, but he wasn't about to ask.
"Ahh, I am not, no. I was there before, but I've got things to do, places to see, with a friend of my own. He's never had the opportunity to go and just...wander, bit of the more proper sort. So, giving him the chance to go out and breathe a little." He replied, setting his hands atop his books. "How often do you go to Thornmouth?"
