I'm suggesting a friends list feature that shows a green bubble icon (like Skype or Discord) next to online users on your friends list that have their settings to show when they're online.
Also to show this bubble next to their chat icon in PMs so people don't have to check every single profile to see if any of their partners are online.
I know that I personally like to check if anyone I roleplay with or chat with is online and seeing the little green bubble on other apps is always so nice.
Other Status markers:
Away! (Sleeping zZz), Busy! (Do not disturb), Replying!, and Invisible (Hidden).
TL;DR Online Status markers next to names to show they're online on a friends list and in DMs. (When they have their settings to show they're online)

I recall requests like this being rejected before over privacy concerns and the issue of "I can see they're online, why aren't they replying to me?" when they might be otherwise busy, the visit may have been unintended, or just not feeling up to a response at the moment. I am one of many who would always be "hidden" if this did come to be.

Yeah, I think that it almost would make me feel like I was in a spot where they know I’m online, but I’m not planning on replying today. It gets frustrating, IMO.

Technically this is already a thing, since you can decide to show when you're online on your profile page, this would just be skipping the step of clicking on someones profile and seeing the 'ONLINE' under their photo, wouldn't it?
I think this would be okay in that sense because the online status is already a thing you can turn on or off.
I personally also update a status daily or so on my profile to say whether I am reply or not, so that people know even if it says I'm online, I'm not necessarily replying.
But in a general sense, people can already see when someone is online if they have it set to show, so this would just be another indicator of that setting.
Ahh
I know this feature would be liked by others. I honestly prefer to stay more hidden. I have that feeling if people saw "online" i would get pestered for post replies for hours.
I actually rather like people having no idea when im online for that reason.
But i suppose its neither here no there so long as there are settings for it.. so people like me could go "invisible" so to speak.

Aye! That is precisely my point! It is already a function you can turn on and off but it's only visible if you visit every single one of your rp partners profiles.
As someone who chats a ton, I'd love to just have to glance at my inbox to see who's online at the time. A "Do not Disturb" status would be useful to show others when you're busy. To me seeing my partners online fills me with joy because I know I might get a reply to our OOC DMs or maybe our roleplay.
Simple status bubbles like "Away!" And "Do not Disturb!" Go a long way!
I would also be set to invisible all the time. While I wouldn't mind being seen as online, like the vast majority have said people begin to start thinking this:
And while there is nothing wrong with being hopeful, my concern is people who see me online become expectant of a response. This will undoubtedly make me feel like if I log in I am expected to send rp responses right away when theres a thousand different reasons why I might not.
The current setting to the feature is one I very much prefer, rather than placing in someone's face whether I'm online or not constantly, nothing is mentioned at all on my profile, and only if I choose to add it will the 'currently online' title be added. I much prefer this unobtrusive and small addition to a profile rather than putting me and all of everyone else's friends on a list.
Personally, I really like the way things are now and would be disappointed to see this feature employed myself.

However;
What about just a thing where people just go to their friends list that's already available to them and see a little 'online' for friends that have that setting turned on?
That wouldn't be at all intrusive for anyone who has the setting turned on or off, but more convenient for people.
I am also confused though. Isn't the point of the online setting supposed to be so people can see when you're online and know they have more of a chance to get a reply when they message you? Or an easier time contacting you?
Having the 'online' setting turned on but not wanting people to assume you're actually online conversing with people seems to defeat the purpose of having the setting turned on.
I don't think the issue is the online setting being intrusive but rather people not using the setting in the best way possible or having it turned on when they probably shouldn't.
Edit: also currently people can already filter in the RP Search for 'users that are online now'. With a little thing that says 'looking to jump into something quickly/right now? Filter by users online now!'
I have planned for some time to add an online indicator to the friends list page. It will function using the existing privacy settings for "Who can see when I'm online"
No plans to add it to PM views atm, though.

i think it would be a good idea if it would be possible to have an option as we do now, where we can select if we want everybody or just our friends to see it; and even an option where we would be able to choose not to have it be visible at all
i think it would be unfortunate if it was a bit forced so everybody would be able to see anybody else who was online; sometimes i’m online to reply to ooc messages or check forums because i don’t have the energy to reply and if everybody were able to see that i was online, i would feel as if i was obligated to reply every time i logged on
at the same time, i get excited when i see somebody is online and when they log off without sending me a reply, i feel a bit odd because we’re mainly on this site to roleplay
