I can't presume to know the best way to screen NSFW content on the site or know what's already in the works, but some easy improvements would be to explain the Comfort Levels settings better, and/or censor NSFW images in activity feeds. More informed choices are nice, as are fewer unpleasant surprises.
Our community tends to go above and beyond to self-censor NSFW images with external links and custom thumbnails, so it's easy to forget that NSFW pics submitted to gallery widgets can, like everything else, show up in unintended places. (Maybe that's why.) In fact, the first time I clicked someone's user page and got an eyeful of hardcore fetish porn in their feed, I assumed it was an error: we aren't allowed to display NSFW images on our profile pages, so why would the system be doing it?
I reported it only to be told nothing was amiss, as the pics were from a properly-tagged page, and I did indicate in my settings I was "comfortable seeing sexuality"... which I didn't realize was signing a blank check. My friends know my comfort seeing NSFW things isn't an invitation to show me without any kind of warning, and I would expect the same distinction from a site like the RPR. If the "warning" is checking the Comfort Levels boxes, there's no reason not to explain that better.
So again, some possible improvements, some of which would be very easy:

So again, some possible improvements, some of which would be very easy:
- In user settings, indicate that the Comfort Levels checkboxes are intended to affect the user experience site-wide, not just on character pages with those flags as one might assume
- Replace the Comfort Levels boxes with toggles that say "Show me everything" or "Ask me first" for each category, which is already how they work right now, only this way it would say so
- If an image/gallery widget/page is indicated NSFW, blur or otherwise censor image thumbnails that appear elsewhere
I approve this suggestion and Amadding into this I'd love a toggle for mobile safe mode.
I don't mind seeing a boobie at home, much less keen on accidentally stumbling over one in public.

As someone who occasionally forgets to tag an art upload as mature I just wanted to note that the mods are always exceptionally quick at reminding me.
I like the idea of "Ask first" and "Show me everything". This could be useful for people who browse at work too, but are otherwise fine with spicy content.

Easy enough to change how the toggles are identified! I'll do that.
It'd be hard for us to know where you are!

The site always knows when I'm on mobile!
I mean an option to censor explicit art on mobile.
Mmmmm... the site knows how wide your browser is at the moment, but actually has no idea at all about mobile. Try shrinking down your browser on desktop!
Hmm, then how about a discrete switch-toggle at the footer of the skinny-browser version RPR which easily disables sexual content.
Instead of discrete switches depending on mobile and desktop, since a wide spectrum of users tend to use mobile only on the site, would it be possible to have an option similar to what Tumblr had?
Tumblr used to have a feature where you could toggle yourself from being "in public" to "at home" that would automatically disable images from loading immediately and instead place a "spoiler" over them that would blur them out, or put a "click to show" button over top of them. It was extremely useful back when Tumblr was able to show NSFW images and one wanted to scroll through while on a bus or in a coffee shop.

I'm curious about this part:
Why would one assume it only applies to character profiles? No mention of characters are made in the setting
