Though the barn across the road from the taphouse was uninspiring to look at from the outside, it had a sturdy roof that kept out the rain, and a spacious interior for those looking to rest for the night. In one corner, a short fellow dressed head to toe in heavy robes with a wooden mask across his face save slits for the eyes. He had laid out a blanket to sell his wares. On it were a few bits and bobs: a game set for children, some cogs fit for clockwork, a block and tackle set off to one side, and several flasks of oil. Some brightly painted counting-bead devices were lined up across the back. He was obviously a small time seller; he had one donkey and no wagon, but that didn't seem to shame him.
