DISCENTEM
CORVIDAE
.LEARNING RAVENS
xxThe corvidae are adept at hiding in the background; their specialty is remaining unnoticed while observing the world at large. Aside from their feral forms being larger and stronger than normal corvidae, they blend well in nature. Humans with strangely avian traits, such as odd eyes, naturally wildly-hued hair, and a fascination with learning could in truth be one of these shape-shifters.
▼LORE・゚•
xxDue to their ability to hide in plain sight as either humans or birds, it's difficult to pin down their history. Their legends about their origins claim that they descend from Huginn and Muninn, Odin's famous birds. Other races seem to view this as idle and fallacious boasting. (Non-Corvidae) Historians believe that the species is actually descended from familiars that were released into the wild who eventually learned how to take a human form. This could explain their memories, and perhaps their inability to create magic on their own while still being able to use enchanted objects.
They have a fascination with knowledge and history. As such, they can often be found at the scenes of battles, or graveyards. This, and their willingness to join their feral brethren while feasting on carrion, has caused them to be viewed in a macabre light. It has been rumored that one of the famous ravens at the Tower of London is actually one of these supernatural birds, and that the post has been passed down through the centuries. A few maintain that King Arthur was the most famous of their race, citing the (rare) belief that he became a red-legged and red-beaked crow after his last battle. Their habits of tricks and tall tales, however, make their own claims somewhat suspect.
They have no central ruler; the species tends to revere age. A council of elders will meet for worldwide problems, while most groups will simply have one or two elders that act as advisers and guides.
▼EXPECTANT LIFESPAN・゚•
xxThey are nearly immortal and have an indefinite lifespan. They physically mature around 18 and aging slows starting at age 25. They physiologically age one year per decade after that. Despite this longevity, they are not immune to disease or injury and may be killed. They heal at the same pace and efficiency as mundane humans.
▼REPRODUCTION・゚•
xxCorvidae reproduce sexually, and because of this, AFAB Corvidae will menstruate in human form. They may be born human or hatch in their true form if both parents are also Corvidae. The DC gene is recessive; someone born from two of the Corvidae will always be a Corvid. Someone born from a human and a Corvid will NOT be Corvid, unless the gene is carried (and passed on) by their human parent. This means that in rare cases, two humans have the chance to have a Corvid child. This child will be born human, but will begin exhibiting the behavioral traits of their avian kin.
Even without coming in contact with fellow Corvidae, the human-born child will shift at midnight on their eighteenth birthday as ancestral memories unlock in a forced dream. They will always awaken at sunrise, usually in the nearest 'natural' habitat for their species. Corvidae born in their true form grow up with inherent awareness of this knowledge.
▼BEHAVIORAL TRAITS・゚•
xxThe Corvidae are obsessed with knowledge. They will go above and beyond in order to obtain it, even when doing so is risky. This behavior makes them highly suited to many professions. Most will choose a specific subject, but some prefer to research anything and everything they can. Many have an instinctual fear of their natural predators. Almost all Corvidae are afflicted with kleptomania. Unlike most human sufferers, they generally wear this disorder as a mark of pride. When groups of Corvidae meet, they will often compete to see who has stolen the strangest item. Many subspecies possess impressive vocal ranges, even in their human shapes.
▼PHYSICAL DETAILS・゚•
xxTheir natural form will always be larger than their feral kin; the usual size difference is roughly 50% larger. Their human height is somewhat relative to their feral height, (i.e. a common raven would be a very tall human). Someone related to the dwarf jay would be very short. Their eyes remain the same in either form. They are usually black, brown, yellow, or in rare cases blue or pink and align with the natural eye color of their feral form. Albinism, melanism, and piebaldism have been exhibited. In all cases, both human and feral forms show the traits. Their hair color will always be similar to their natural plumage. Their human forms are noticeably lighter than they should be due to low bone density. This natural osteoporosis makes them especially susceptible to broken bones.
ɴᴏᴛᴇ: It is possible to dye their hair, but shape-shifting will cause it to dissipate. It will need to be reapplied when in human form again. This also applies to bleach.xxx

xxx ▼ ABILITIES...&...WEAKNESSES・゚•
SHAPESHIFTING
xxTheir natural form is their feral form, and human form is secondary. They are birds first and foremost, even those born human initially. They may shift freely between the two, even combining the traits. They may not add extra limbs (i.e. they will either have wings or arms, but not both). They may choose to have a bird head and otherwise human form, in which case the bird head would be proportionate to the rest of their body. The same is true of having an avian body paired with a human head, and they are able to take on a "harpy" form at will.
ɴᴏᴛᴇ: When shifting, any garments, piercings, or other jewelry will be shed. As mentioned above, any bleach or hair dye will reset, and when they shift back to human form, their hair will once more be its natural color(s).
FLIGHT
xxWhen possessed of wings in one form or another, they are able to fly. Some may have a compulsion to migrate from time to time with the seasons, and certain species of Corvidae are known to change location frequently as the urge moves them. If they are unable to fly for extended amounts of time, they can fall into a deep depression and become reclusive.
M AGICAL......A WARENESS
xxThey possess a hypertuned, innate awareness of all magic around them. They will know when magic is being used in their vicinity, be it an active spell, or something so simple as a passive glamour. Because of this, especially aware Corvidae may be able to suss out the origins of a supernatural creature if they are afflicted by a curse (as some werewolves and vampires are). True shapeshifting will be harder to detect unless it is a fellow Corvidae, although they may be able to sense that someone is inhuman, if not identify what they are. They always know their kin, however, feeling an instinctive magical pull in the presence of their own kind.
ɴᴏᴛᴇ: Their hyper awareness can be a massive source of distraction, and can lead to pervasive paranoia. If surrounded by magic frequently, especially in tune Corvidae may become overstimulated or distressed.
F ERAL......C OMMUNICATION
xxCorvidae are able to communicate with all feral birds, even those not in their family. They are not able to understand them as though conversing, but can read their emotions empathically. Birds are able to understand them clearly, however, and especially adept feral birds who have learned to mimic certain human words may use them to communicate.
N AVIGATION
xxAll Corvidae possess an innately strong sense of direction. They are always able to find their way home and are able to migrate long distances to locations previously visited with memory alone.
E IDETIC......M EMORY
xxPossessed of a preternatural memory, they are able to recall most things with crystal clarity, except where their senses were addled at the time with substances (or another reason). This is primarily a way for them to retain knowledge, but even the mundane can be remembered. Their memories can be so vivid that they engage various senses. Unfortunately, they have the potential to become auditory and visual hallucinations. This can be heavily exacerbated in Corvidae who have suffered from trauma, which already predisposes them to flashbacks. In these cases, it can be quite a struggle to ground them and pull them out of the memory.
M IMICRY
xxSome subspecies can hone their natural talents to the point that they can fool all but the keenest ears, and even lower quality recording equipment. They can learn to mimic both natural and mechanical sounds, however, their vocal chords have a tendency to become damaged when overused.
M AGICAL......N ULL
xxDespite their memorization skill and magical awareness, Corvidae are unable to perform any magic. They can (and often do) make use of items that have been enchanted by others, but are unable to use items which require channeling magical energy in order to work.
