No one really knows the origins of the disease; however, we do know that the furre population was the first to become infected—likely due in no small part to their close relation to the more feral of their cousins. Because this disease is transmitted to newborn children from the mother during birth, players must use a DS-automated roll to determine what strain of the disease their child will be born with: death, mutation, or carrier. Re-rolls are not allowed, this must be a random event.
Clinical Documentation: RABID X
All species of mammals are susceptible to the Rabid X virus infection, though some are more likely to just be carriers whereas others are more susceptible to death or mutation. Rabid X infects the central nervous system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death.

The early symptoms of this disease in people are similar to that of many other illnesses, including fever, headache, and general weakness or discomfort. As the disease progresses, more specific symptoms appear and may include insomnia, anxiety, confusion, slight or partial paralysis, excitation, hallucinations, agitation, hypersalivation (increase in saliva), difficulty swallowing, and hydrophobia (fear of water). Death usually occurs within days of the onset of these symptoms.

The initial strain of Rabid X seemed innocent enough. The first few thousand cases of the disease took 3-6 months from infection to death. The strength had increased in the next round of 100 thousand cases, with it taking 1-3 months until the most recent cases (and subsequently the most deaths per volumes), which only take 3-6 weeks. It has grown increasingly strong over the years since the initial outbreak.

Death rates are exceptionally high amongst both furres and humans; however, furres have a 10-15% higher non-mortal rate than humans.

Infected feral animals are more susceptible to mutation/carrier, whereas infected domesticated animals almost always result in death.

Transmitted through bodily fluids: kissing, spitting, sexual contact, biting, and birth. Sneezing/coughing does not transmit the disease as it dies when airborne due to needing immediate incubation. This resulted in entire households becoming infected at a rapid rate.
Symptoms by Strain:
DEATH X | Begins with insomnia and confusion. Sclerae become bloodshot, and skin gets significantly pale. As the days progress, partial- (and in some cases full-) paralysis sets in alongside an increased difficulty swallowing as well as hyper-salivation. Concentration becomes inherently difficult and, eventually, the organs begin to shut down, causing the infected individual to die.

3-6 week period.

MUTANT X | Starts with fever, runny nose, chills, and just an allover achy feeling. Sclerae become bloodshot, skin darkens. It seems innocent enough that people do not feel the need for any sort of aggressive treatment, and try to combat it with over the counter medications. However, as this strain progresses, it gets increasingly worse with the infected becoming violent and starting to hallucinate. Instead of death, they transform into monstrosities. This strain can be transmitted through the saliva, so kissing, sexual activity, sneezing, and biting (especially where the skin is broken) are all susceptible to passing the virus from one individual to another. Any samples of this infection, when looked at under a microscope, will be similar to the death strain but still differ in its own right.

3-6 week period.

CARRIER X | Ultimately the most dangerous of the three strains. It presents itself in the form of a bad case of allergies, or a severe off-and-on cold that shows for a few days, goes away, then reappears after a few days to one week later. Eventually, it tapers off and the infected individual no longer shows any signs of being infected; however, it is merely dormant and still possible to be transmitted.

3-6 week period.
