Last night locals would find the tax notices disappearing and all but the ones in the tavern, would be gone by dawn. In their place there would be graffiti, it was easily washed away. The paint consisted of charcoal and a deep red berry. All similar but with different messages.

Just past sunrise, when the morning shift change happened, the soldiers would notice the new found symbol where the tax posters once existed. They had somehow missed them going up in the night but rather than face the wrath of their General the men quickly go to work removing each and every one. Their work was diligent, in only an hour or less they were able to wash or taken down them all.
The same paintings as before have cropped up over the evening. They are slower to appear as whoever is painting them, seems to be cautious this time around.
Notices that were in and around the tavern have been taken down and replaced with notices instead of paintings:
The biggest one was found on the roof top of the jail house with the same symbol as the others, only different words are painted hastily across the entire span of it.
If any of the guards clean off the paint this time, they may find themselves suffering a horrible rash wherever they make contact with the 'paint'

This time the soldiers were on the lookout for such tomfoolery and the poster areas were well lit enough with lanterns in most places they could tell something was amiss. Most of the new posters cropping up were taken down just as fast as they went up in obvious places. The ones inside the tavern did draw a questioning look from the soldiers sent to take them down and these posters lasted much longer. How did these even get in here? Poor Bud was taken somewhere private for questioning.
The jailhouse roof was another quizzical blindspot for the men and it must have been drawn very hastily to have avoided them seeing it at all during the night. Two soldiers were sent up with scrubbing brushes and water, removing the symbol took over an hour to make sure it was entirely removed.
