"That would be nice, getting some gear. I had to leave all of mine behind after I left my ship," Opalie said. She followed him out.
The sun was beginning to rise outside, and it was definitely warming up again. The town seemed to be recovering, with signs of movement down below. However, instead of hunting parties, it looked like people were just cleaning up and generally starting their days.

"what sort of a weapon do you normally favor?" *Daxton asked while they walked, making his way along to Nietve's Serif's Office. He glanced around town to see how the recovery efforts were going. Keeping an eye on the villager's reactions to Opalie. If there was going to be any issue, despite the fact she was traveling with him, he wanted to see it coming*

The town was not doing well. There was no organization in the recovery efforts, and based on the number of people out and about, their dead and wounded were far more than what it had appeared last night.
On top of that, those that remained were eyeing Opalie with suspicion. After the events of the night before, they must have been on guard for anything unusual that remained... and the cloak Daxton was letting her borrow wasn't perfect. If he left her on her own here, surely she would be attacked.
Despite this, Opalie didn't seem concerned. She walked confidently, like nothing was wrong. Perhaps she was just oblivious?
"Well, I'm most proficient with nets," she answered. "I used to have this magic one; wrapped itself up in a nice ball when I wasn't using it, but then you throw it, and fwoom! As soon as it hits something, it flares out and then snaps back, wrapping up whatever it hit. Size permitting, of course."
As she spoke, a small group approached them. They looked like they wanted trouble.

*You stand straight to greet the coming force, a scowl on your lips and a glare in your eyes. You wanted to let them know....trouble....trouble was a bad idea with you around*

You see them falter... looking almost confused? It's pretty obvious that they were not expecting this reaction, and very nearly decide not to approach after all.
But one of them, a fellow dragon born, speaks up anyway. This one has deep, ruby red scales over ash grey skin.
"We wanted to thank you, friend, for the help you've lent last night. I own the Glimmering Tides Inn; if ever you are weary, a bed will be open for you there."

(17 on daxton rechecking perception after the npcs proved nice)
[It was just your tired eyes perceiving danger where there was none; these people actually do just want to thank you.]
*Daxton, upon this realization actually seems to openly blush a bit at his mistake. Placing a hand on the back of his head. He regretted not having his cloak to help hide his face right then*
"Ah, my apologies for my manners. A night of conflict has left my soldiers training rather on edge. If you'll forgive me, I'd graciously accept your offer"

The dragonborn smiled at him, no harm done. "It's been a long night for everyone, and I'm sure in the next couple of weeks there'll be plenty of undead sightings, even after they've been all dealt with." He wasn't saying as much, but especially Hansen "suffered" from these figments of imaginations. The child would be making wild claims about slaying hoards of the undead for the next... well, ever, really. "I'm sure you've got things to attend to, but when you get the chance, our doors are open and I'll be sure to have hot food waiting for you and your companion. After all that happened last night, it's a good reminder to take the time to celebrate living."
*Daxton offered the fellow dragonborn a half-bow* "Thank you for your hospitality, we'll look forward to it. We do have a report to give to the sheriff, so for now we will take our leave" *With that daxton bade the group goodbye and continued on his way with Opalie to Nietve's office*
Nietve's office was just across the street from where they'd been stopped, but it wasn't him behind the desk. His deputy that Daxton had met the night before during the fight was there, working on some paperwork.
He was a khajit, with a tail that flicked back and forth as he worked. He had strange, purple black fur, and one of his paws was pure white. There was a scimitar at his side with glowing runes on it, and when he looked up, he had piercing blue white eyes the color of ice.
"Hey there! If you're looking for Nietve, he finally went home to get some rest, but I'd be happy to help you! He appointed me as sheriff in his absence, so really there's nothing I can't do!" He grinned and stood up, leaning on the desk with his tail swishing back and forth excitedly. "Please tell me you've found some undead you need help with!"

*Daxton almost let a bemused smirk cross his lips at the deputy's antics, but kept it in line for the business at hand*
"The contrary actually, I eliminated the undead out at the smuggler's cave. I've come to report this fact, collect my payment, and hopefully locate some gear for my new companion, before continuing our investigation"
*Daxton nodded to opalie as well as the armory*
"If there is gear left to spare that is, if not we can use the payment to secure some at the town's blacksmith"

The deputy's face visibly fell in disappointment. "Fiiiine, if you must. We were pretty wiped out after last night, but you can take a look at what's left. And." He rustled under the desk, eventually pulling out a sack of gold. Daxton's name and the amount had been written on an attached tag, along with the symbol of St. Peter's Order. "This was left for you."
*Daxton opened up the pouch to quickly count out the gold, and then pocketed it* "Thanks, do you happen to have a piece of paper I could write a quick report on my findings to the sheriff on?" *then turning his eye back to opalie he adds* "and while I do that my partner here should head into the armory and grab gear she thinks would best fit her. Weapon, armor, whatever the two of you would agree together might be fair for her to take"
The pouch had 125 gold in it, and a... piece of wood right at the top? It looked like someone had tried to carve it... someone without much skill. It looks like either a wingless dragon, or a lizard, or both.
The deputy grins at that. "Alright! I think we have just the thing!" He stands, and goes to open a door for Opalie. "Come right on back and we'll see what we can do!"
Opalie looks at Daxton for a moment, clearly dubious about going with this deputy, but she does go. You can hear the deputy talking to her even after the door is closed.

*Daxton considered it a test of sorts for his new companion to figure out the gear that would work for them, and to deal with this....strange...deputy*
*Daxton pocketed the gold, and used the paper to write a quick report to the sheriff about the events of the cave, and what he would be doing next in regards to continuing his investigation into the recent demon dilemma. Then left it on the desk*
*Finally, he took up the little lizard carving and took a moment or two to look it over. Wondering why it might have been included among his payment. Not that he'd complain, he was rather fond of Lizards and Reptiles*
(13 total on perception for the carving)

The carving is a normal carving as far as you can tell. There's a faint bit of magic to it, but it doesn't actually do anything. It's reasonable to suspect Hansen carved it, and had Rictor put it in the bag for you. The kid seems to like you well enough, anyway.
It doesn't take too long for Opalie to come back out with the deputy, and she has a fairly standard mace over one shoulder, and a pair of sturdy boots in her other. It's not great, but for a city that was just attacked, it's the best they can do at the moment.
She thanks the deputy, who sits on the edge of the desk. "So uh, where're you two off to now?"

"The inn to rest for a bit, the sheriff has the right idea after being up all night. Fresh eyes are better than dead ones" Daxton replied, fishing into his pocket to grab a bit of cord to string the carving on as a necklace, and then putting it on. *Then when we wake, when the town is better resettled....I'm thinking the blacksmith or possibly the tannery...with my payment, some new gear of my own may be in order..." He then took a look over at what was in Opalie's hands. "nice boots, by the way.....when done with the gear round up, it's back to our investigation before the trail gets too cold. If your deparment finds anymore information on it, please do let us know"
"Sure sure," the deputy says. "I'm sure you'll hear about it if anything else comes through... and not have to listen to the crazy townspeople in the process. You know a few days ago it almost came to a witch hunt?" he scoffed. "As if witches exist. Anyway, I'm sure I'll be seeing the two of you again soon!"
*nodding, daxton departed from the building with Opalie in tow. Heading back towards the Inn for the night* (up to you if you want to time skip here to the next morning, or if you had anything else planned for the night)
