The story takes place on a world known as On or Yhwon (depending on the culture) on the continent of Haugrund, in the Kingdom of Shatterguard.
The Kingdom of Shatterguard is bordered on the east by the River Strond, on the west by the River Thin, and to the south by the high Shield Mountains. It is but one part of the former Kingdom of Corelond, which was broken up into several smaller kingdoms 230 years ago, during a great civil war. To the east is the (now-fallen) Kingdom of Strond. To the west are the kingdoms of Rodsper (or Redspear) and Dawnshield. South of the mountains are several other kingdoms and fiefdoms. East beyond the Kingdom of Strond are lands currently held by the Night's Horde, a coalition of various enemy races, who have all joined under the command of the Shadows, an ancient race of the elder days, which was awakened fifty years earlier by unknown means, gradually growing in power and taking ever more territory.
North of Shatterguard is an ocean, beyond which are other lands, etc.
