("Eldest," the oldest known living eldhundr. Revered amongst his kind.)
Eldhundr
Species Name: Eldhundr (pronounced: ELD-hoond); plural: Eldhundar).
Also Called: Hellhounds, Fire Hounds, Death Dogs.
Origin: Muspelheimr, the realm of primordial plane of light and fire.
Lifespan: 1,500-2,000 years (possibility of immortality).
Height: Max. 65 inches (the size of a large pony) for males, Max. 50 inches for females.
Weight: 350-550 lbs.
Diet: Carnivorous.
Physical Characteristics:- Bone Structure: Stout, thickly-boned with a density far more than it appears
- Eyes: Black sclera (the "whites" of their eyes) with pupils of any range of bright reds, oranges, yellows, or even white. Always very small and slit-like.
- Horns: Smooth, usually ram-shaped. They spiral backward and outward usually, but can be grown by individual Eldhundr to almost any shape. They are usually warm colors (red, orange, yellow/gold, brown, beige) but a rare mutation can cause them to be bright green, bright blue, or even white.
- Hooves: Cloven (like cows or donkeys) in two. Fore-hooves can curve downward like claws. Come in the same colors as their horns.
- Wings: Massive, spike-lined, two-fingered wings with membranous flesh between them. Usually the fleshy part connects with the mid-spine.
- Hide: Bare, rough flesh of black or grey, with thin, jagged markings of various shades (black, red, orange, yellow, or white, with fiery blue being exceptionally rare). The markings appear similar to cracks in the earth where molten rock can be seen beneath.
- Mane: The only hair on their bodies, this coarse shock of hair can come in black, grey, white, yellow, orange, red, and, rarely, bright green or blue.
- Tail: Thin and whip-like. Utterly hairless.
- Common Ailments: Hypothermia, Rock Joint (in colder weather, their joints grind against each other painfully), Night Blindness/Poor vision in the dark
- Gestation: Around 10 months, in litters of 2 to 4. Able to breed successfully with most canine and dog species, and some dragon species.
- Activity Time: Diurnal
- Social Structure: Similar to Earth's wolves in that it is lead by a dominant individual, called the Elder (usually male). The dominant individual usually has a favored mate, with whom many children are born, but can breed with any of the females in the pack. The favored mates may also mate with others, though this is not generally common. The bulk of the pack is made up of their children and subordinates, called Hunters collectively.
- Mating Habits: Polygamous with relationships lasting from a single mating to centuries, to even a lifetime (this latter option is rare).
- Flight: Despite not having hollow bones like their jotunnhundar cousins, their wings and the magic in the blood of eldhundar suffices to keep them aloft.
- Able to vanish/vaporize their wings to appear wingless.
- Fire Breath: Able to belch fire from a gaseous organ in their chest
- Shape-Shifting: Individuals practiced in the art of magic are capable of changing their shape. Many choose a bipedal version of their quadruped form, or even humans and alfar.
- Telepathy: Whenever they are in an animal/non-anthro form, they are able to communicate, telepathically, with other sapient animals/shifters.
