As some of you may know, I have begun to knit for charity recently. In particular, I have started knitting breast prostheses for breast cancer survivors who aren't happy with the silicone prostheses that are more commonly used globally.
Although my process is a little slow at the moment, I'm happily knitting along. Maybe you can make a difference in someone's life by knitting them a knocker too?
Besides breast cancer survivors, you may find other uses for these as well. It might be neat for transgender women who are still waiting for hormone therapy to kick in, or who are unable to afford a transition at the moment, but who still want wear bras with a natural looking filling! Or on a more light hearted note, knit them as a gag gift for family and friends with some leftover acrylic yarn.
Most importantly though, you can be part of something like this:
Even just one happy person is an accomplishment in life! I recommend shopping on www.iceyarns.com for cheap 100% cotton yarn (I really like the Baby Cotton, it's soft and the right weight for knockers and comes in tons of colors!) but you can also walk into your local yarn store to pick something by hand.
For patterns (knitting on DPNs, knitting magic loop and crocheting) visit KnittedKnockers.org. The UK also has an organization for these, but they only accept their own pattern knits and you will have to go through an application process as found here to join.
Will you be knitting for this charity? Have you knitted for other charities before or do you really want to? Please share with us below!
