Geryn could be found in an alleyway of Mac Anu's market district, his character lounging on a couple of crates with his signature cap tucked low over his eyes as if sleeping. His sword, a rare weapon called Aztec for the ancient look, was stuck through one of the crates and used as a footrest for his left boot, his right was on his left knee. The higher level servers had been shut down for maintenance so he was stuck in the basic root town of Mac Anu, though he didn't mind it. He liked the background music that constantly played and the water effects were incredible for an MMO. Snorting softly, Geryn shook the real world from his mind, and the blademaster sat up. It was close to the time that some player wanted to meet him to buy a rare item, or possibly information, the e-mail had been unclear.
*He saw the particle effects flash around him as he changed his perception into the world. Looking around seeing the conglomeration of the players milling about, server maintenance must be happening on the other servers that's how this normally happens. At least PKing was strictly forbidden in the starting root town. He had been camped on Dun Loireag not too long ago for his politics. He shook his head thinking to himself walking down the steps toward the large bridge that spanned the canal. His staff, the Rod of Dawn, also a Rare item awarded for an RP event close to the start of The World, which wasn't all that long ago clicked on the ground as he walked. He made very brief small talk, and greetings with a few people as he made his way over the bridge, toward the back alley.*
Geryn hopped off the crate as the shadowed figure of a character blocked the light from the end of the back alley. Taking his sword from the crate, which actually held the mark of a sword having been through it, he twirled the blade before leaning against it like a cane. Sometimes he wished weapons could be either clipped to the character or simply vanish until needed, but as it was the player's weapon had to remain visible though not in hand. "You Apeiron? I got your e-mail. You said you had business with me." Geryn looked casually at the wavemaster. He had heard of the guy, an eccentric loon according to most, and Geryn was certain that the wavemaster had heard of him. The fact the guy had e-mailed Geryn proved that knowledge was possessed.
He nodded curtly moving toward Geryn. "Yes I am." He stated simply leaning on the staff looking around. "Mind if we trade member addresses and form a party real fast, I would prefer our conversation not be overheard." He asked simply sending his member address to Geryn easily moving closer and leaning on the staff easily. His eyes continued wandering, he wasn't often back here, to be fair he spent most of his time adventuring with low level parties so he was normally on fields spamming healing and buff spells while avoiding damage. That is primarily what he was good at, which to be fair isn't a bad thing to have in a wavemaster.
Geryn received the member address and sent his own back along with the invite to join as a party. Apeiron's stats appeared off screen for Geryn and with a quick glance to those he nodded, Apeiron would notice that a low level player, in their mid-twenties, was also within the party but not near the two. From the way the GP levels changed the lower level player was buying and selling items in the markets. "Ignore him. A new member to my guild selling off some of the common items people have been bringing in. He isn't close enough to listen in and we can always kick him from the party if need be." Geryn had no qualms about being in the back alley, he liked it there and was at home...mostly because it was his home. No one except other members of Abaharaki knew who was a member, so no one ever knew when they were being watched or talked to by one.
Accepting the invitation, he then switched to party chat and voted to kick the other member. "I would prefer these dealings be 100% private, just in case. Sensitive information will be exchanged, I'm sure you recognize the importance of that." He only knew of Geryn and the Guild because the list he was given of the guilds and their leaders. He was favored by the mods and given some privileges because of that. He and a small party had taken down a hacking ring responsible for duplicating a rare valuable item which was de-stabilizing the world economy. The story wasn't released, since the World was still pretty new, but it was fixed in the last major patch so it couldn't happen again. Upon reviewing his stats he would find while being low level he had a surprisingly large amount of SP, and Physical and Magical Evasion, but very little in his other stats. The items weren't very rare except the staff that he had equipped.
Geryn shrugged and allowed the other player to be kicked, sending him a quick mail informing him that it was guild business that he wasn't ready for. "Alright, now no one else can listen in. Except for the mods of course." Leaning against the wall of the alley the blademaster played at trimming his nails with his sword, though it had no real effect except the animation. Assuming that Apeiron had check his stats, Geryn was at the max level afterall, the blademaster waited for the wavemaster to reveal his business.
"Do you know of the Book of Twilight?" He started after they were the only two members, he didn't make many movements simply leaned on the staff looking. He didn't reveal it, but he was aware the mods were busy planning for something else. He didn't know what it was but knew that they wouldn't be listening in on chatter right at this moment which is why he thought it was the perfect time to investigate some rumors of relics that he had heard from the grapevine.
Geryn's face didn't even twitch, though the player behind the character leaned back in the real world. "I might have heard rumors...thing doesn't exist though." Smiling now Geryn nodded to the end of the alleyway, back towards the market. "Let's have some fun, a player I have been waiting for has just logged in." Letting the wavemaster decide to follow or not, Geryn left the alley and headed to the main bridge where he was sure to run into the target sooner rather than later. The plan worked of course, the heavy blade with black and silver armor appeared within moments and a brief inspection told Geryn the character name matched as well. "Sorry, but business is business." Unfortunately he still had the party chat mode on, so only Apeiron would hear it before Geryn struck out with Aztec, killing the heavy blade in one hit. Due to the other servers being down the mods had lifted the PK ban on Mac Anu for the time being for all characters over level twenty. Letting the heavy blade's body vanish into grey data Geryn sent a short mail to the person who had hired the hit on the heavy blade.
"It does exist I've seen part of the code." He followed quickly his character was fast because a boost to speed was granted because of his evasion stats. He winced a little at the blatant PK, but it happened he knew that was part of this guild, and it was quick and painless, it wasn't griefing it was a single death. It was the persistent camping of a single player he was against personally.
The chaos gate stopped functioning for those that tried it and the skies turned red the usual background music of the town changed altering to a unique battle music that was blended from the previous background music and the large gates at the back of town exploded open, a large ogre with giant club with mammoth skull adorning the front. A small horde of wolves came with him pouring in and overtaking the low level characters who after were killed there player animations transformed into more wolves and were player controlled NPCs now so the low level characters who were just cannon fodder could still have some fun in the event. The wolves were a solid match for mid to high level characters, and several had to be waded through to get to the clear boss character of the event. The PCs slain by the boss character were teleported back to the start of the event as smaller ogre's, and were rough challenges in their own rights, but were far away from the main fray at the time that it started. Special token items were given to each character who became an ogre, and pets to each person transformed into a wolf to make up for some of the control being taken away. The pet was a minature version of the wolves that were attacking. The tokens granted the wolf pet and another special ability. Anyone who defeated an ogre was also granted a token.
Raising a brow at Apeiron's claim he was making sure payment for the pk was paid when the event began and the scenery suddenly changed. When the gates burst open Geryn laughed and stood at the bridge waiting for the horde to reach him. Those players that were more eager to wade in and slash at wolves rushed by and the blademaster gave each a salute. For Geryn, someone who had played The World in its beta form and transferred over his knowledge to get his character at a max level this event was nothing. He had participated in harder, impossible, events and now he just waited. For Apeiron their party status would be a huge boost. "Hey, get behind me and heal me if needed and restore my SP if it gets low. I'll get you some levels once the horde reaches the bridge." The plan was perfect, the width of the bridge would make a death channel for the event monsters since none would be out of range of his revolver skill.
He did it quickly and quietly, moving through and casting regenerate on Geryn, and several other buff skills that were granted by the subpar equipment, what they lacked in stats they made up for in skills. Soon a party evade buff was cast on both, it cost a few SP restore potions to finish getting them all cast, but they could be maintained on his normal SP regen because of the different length they took to wear off. The ball on the top of the staff glowed green now that combat had started, and it seemed to have odd ruins floating just above it.
Nodded and got into his battle pose, just something he liked doing, and waited some more. The first enemies were player controlled wolves, a pack of them broke off from the horde and charged. "Revolver!" Geryn spun on his toe, the graphics around him making it seem like he made a mini-tornado that slashed through the wolves and killed in one hit. Geryn gained 0exp, but Apeiron would gain a large amount for each wolf taken down. Just doing the math, Geryn could use revolver ninety-six times without needing his SP restored. However Apeiron's SP regen effectively gave him limitless SP, so Geryn could take his time and use revolver once surrounded. It was an easy strategy that steadily cleared groups of monsters.
He would drop a low level SP restore on Geryn if he dropped below half in an encounter. Aperion seemed very adept at this sort of triage restoration, he wasn't a newbie to the world and had spent his own time in Fragment but reset to be on even footing with non Beta players. He was max level healing set up before, he went more purely support focused with was a niche build, and wasn't considered by CC Corp, at all the equipment was a mixed bag of varied levels, and was meant to supplement different builds. His healing was mediocre at best especially for Geryn's level but it was adequate with some minor item support, because of Aperion's ability to judge the situation, and he threw up elemental resistance after he was confident on what the ogre's were using in the distance. He was thinking ahead and was probably an excellent chess player in the real world, keeping steadily planning in advance. He then noticed one of the player controlled Ogre's had snuck through back alley ways and was making a mess of the lower level characters who scattered away, and was on the opposite side of the bridge. "Geryn at our 7 o'clock probably another 5 minutes and we'll have contact with a real challenge."
Geryn cleared out a space on the bridge so he could take a moment to look behind to the alley. "Not much of a challenge. If I understand the event, the boss ogre is a rounded up average of all the players online at the time of the event's beginning. The miniature ogres are the slain player's level doubled." Nodded at the ogre in the alley he headed for it to test his theory on the leveling. Instead of using his revolver he jumped forward. "Crack Beat!" This time his sword arm was a blur, leveling fifteen hits on the ogre minus any misses, within a single second. The single unit skill was cheaper in SP, but was not cos effective against groups.
"I'm not sure your right about the boss, I'm pretty sure this is a special event set up because of the maintenance... the mods have been busy with repair and this even.. it's why I chose today to contact you." The ogre didn't fall right away but was significantly damaged and a simple attack would finish him. He went after the wavemaster since he was clearly the weak link. To the ogre player surprise Aperion spun out of the way of the club and was between his legs on the other side, making him out of sight which gave him a few seconds to catch up on any dropped buffs that were neglected in the move. He had gained many level and probably could have taken the hit but he felt it was bad form to get sloppy when he didn't have to.
Geryn finished the ogre off with a simple attack, no SP required, but he nodded now that his theory was blown to hell. Frowning he looked back towards the boss ogre. "Alright, stay here and I'll handle the ogre. Here are some attack scrolls if you need them." As a gift Geryn gave Apeiron sixty attack spell scrolls, ten summons of each element. Wading into the horde of wolves and minor ogres, Geryn cut a path to the boss and joined the few high level players that had made it too. Unlucky for the other players Geryn had suffered no serious hits and had a wavemaster backing him, while they were all soloing and soon fell. Using his physical evasion to avoid the blows of the boss ogre Geryn constantly used Crack Beat, fifteen attacks in less than a second at a low SP cost. The added benefit was each finishing blow staggered the ogre into a brief helpless state with served to give Geryn time to move back into proper position.
"I'm more useful up close" He simply stated accepting the scrolls using a few to pick off some edge wolves as they moved up, after it was just them and the main ogre. He changed the staff into non-staff support mode which allowed him to use the abilities in attacks and in non game breaking ways. He shoved the staff down in the center, and a large white bubble seemed to explode up around them throwing everyone but Geryn, Aperion, and the Main Ogre Boss to the outside of the sphere area which was not a white swirl spinning around them in three dimensions closing them off from other PC and NPC interference making this now a localized battle between the party and the boss NPC. He would normally use this ability to help cover escapes if the party was in a bind, he hadn't ever used it in this context but it seemed to fit. He grinned at Geryn and stated simply, "Let Mortal Combat begin?"
