"Two animals are walking towards you. One is big and threatening, the other is small and less than hostile looking. Which one do you shoot first?"
"Ok yeah..I see your point now....
But do you know if anyone here will jump out at us?"
"Doubtful. They know better. They kill us here, it'll draw unwanted attention. Which will eventually lead to them all being killed by hunters in the likeliest case."
The idea that she could be easily killed didn't sit well with Katherine. She couldn't even fight to begin with, so if they were attacked, her life would probably depend on Nathaniel.

She shivered. If he failed..how long would it take for her folks at home to realize that something was wrong? Speaking of home...

"Hey! You never told me...where do you live? Unless..you live in that forest back there....?" Even though she knew she was going over the question limit, she found something very interesting about her new friend..but she didn't know what...
"As it happens I don't currently have one. To be completely honest I was just going to live in the woods." His thoughts drifted as he thought of his home before the banishment. His eye twitched at the thought.
Katherine tried to put everything she learned together. He CURRENTLY didn't have a home..but he said that he used to live in city similar to this one..something must have happened in between. She went right for it.

"What happened for you to lose your home exactly?"
"Fun fact, when you kill an authority members family, even after they killed a member of yours, they tend to get pissed off. I didn't even do it. Then again I didn't do anything to stop it either."
By now, Katherine realized that what ever puzzle piece she was missing was probably private, and she wouldn't be learning it with the method she was using anytime soon. So she decided to leave her "investigation" for later.

"Do you come out here often?"
She asked because she didn't quite know if they were lost or not.
"I haven't been anywhere in quite a few years."
Hey! A hint without even trying! That's a start! She began to carefully plan out the next string of questions, when suddenly a wave of fatigue hit her.

Oh no. Not now. Anytime but now.

She was running low on energy. But she couldn't steal any while she was out in public..they would get caught for sure!

She turned to Nathaniel and tried to sound as casual as possible.
"Hey..I know this is a weird question, considering this is a human city...but since monsters live here as well...would there be, by any chance, a hidden magic shop or something around here..?"

She then mentally yelled at herself for asking such a silly question.
But maybe she could hold her temptations for a few more hours. She wasn't at the point of starving..yet.
"I have a simple question first. What is your species and what do you eat, or otherwise need to survive?"
Oh. Oddly specific question.

"Well..I'm a hybrid species of a human and a ghost.
Eating normal food isn't required, but our abilities overwork our human side, so we have to take energy, preferably human soul, very often.
Sure, just taking the soul would be more efficient..but that temporarily and eventually kills them? We're a complicated mess...
Back at home there's substitutes so we wouldn't have to come here..but I'm obviously not there right now..."
"Interesting. Souls aren't hard to come by. Even if you're new."
"Yeah...but I feel bad doing that to people..if they're attacking, then maybe it's ok...but catching them off guard like that..?"

She just let her sentence trail off. She was always one to believe in "fair fights", so the situation always seemed wrong to her.
"The world is a cruel place. Unfair, indignant, brutal. Take what you need from those around you. Or....give them a reason to give it to you. Question, do monster souls count?"
"Yeah, monster souls also work...what do you have in mind exactly..?"
"How does being bait sound?" He looked to her as he spoke, a small smirk creeping across his face.
"Bait? I think that sounds a little dangerous..."

But in all honesty, Katherine was simply scared.
"Don't worry. The only ones that'll fall for it are the overconfident vampires and such. The ones with little power."
"Well ok..if you say so..as long as you're sure nothing bad will happen.."
