The Janus

HERO NAME: The Grey Fox
REAL NAME see below
Look: man, formal clothing, concealing costume, hood, full disguise

Abilities Your appearance is unchanged by your abilities, and you can keep your powers hidden. You have heightened physical abilities (strength, agility, toughness), and choose two unique abilities:
❑ energy absorption ❑ impossible mobility

Moment of Truth The mask is a lie, and some piece of you has always known that. Doesn’t matter if others can see it. You’re the one that can do the impossible. Mask off. Costume on. And you’re going to save the damn day. Of course, you better hope nobody nasty is watching…
Team Moves When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, ask them if they see you as the person wearing the mask or the person underneath. If the former, mark potential and clear a condition. If the latter, take Influence over them if you reveal yourself. When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, tell them a secret about who you really are. Give them Influence, and shift your Mundane up and your mask’s Label down.
POTENTIAL
X X

Every time you roll a miss on a move, mark potential. Advancement When you fill your potential track, you advance. Choose from the list below. ❑ Take another move from your playbook ❑ Take another move from your playbook ❑ Take a move from another playbook ❑ Take a move from another playbook ❑ Someone permanently loses Influence over you; add +1 to a Label ❑ Change your mask’s Label; add +1 to your mask’s new Label ❑ Unlock your Moment of Truth ❑ Take drives from the Beacon’s playbook
When you’ve taken five advances from the top list, you can take advances from the list below. ❑ Unlock your Moment of Truth after you’ve used it once ❑ Change playbooks ❑ Take an adult move ❑ Take an adult move ❑ Lock a Label, and add +1 to a Label of your choice ❑ Retire from the life or become a paragon of the city

X❑ Insecure (-2 to defend someone or reject others’ influence)

Janus Moves
❑ The Mask: You wear a mask and hide your real identity. Choose what Label you try to embody while wearing your mask: ❑ Savior

Once per session, you can affirm either your heroic or secret identity to switch your Mundane with your mask’s Label. When you reveal your secret identity to someone who didn’t know it already, mark potential.

❑ Game face: When you commit yourself to save someone or defeat a terrible enemy, mark a condition and take +1 ongoing to all rolls in direct pursuit of that goal. At the end of any scene in which you don’t make progress towards that goal, mark a condition. When you fulfill your goal, mark potential.
❑ I’ll save you!: You’re willing to pay high costs to keep your loved ones safe. Reveal your secret identity to someone watching or mark a condition to defend a loved one as if you rolled a 12+.

Secret Identity Your mundane life comes with a series of obligations. Choose a total of three obligations.
When time passes, roll + your Mundane to see how you’re managing your obligations. On a hit, things are going pretty well—you have an opportunity or advantage thanks to one of your obligations. On a 7-9, you’ve lapsed on one obligation, your choice. On a miss, you haven’t given your normal life anywhere near the attention it deserves; the GM chooses two obligations that are going to bite you in the butt.

Secret Identity obligations: Job- I work at the family funeral home. Dad expects me to take over the business so I work odd hours doing odd jobs. Now that I have my license I even go do pick ups at the hospital at night.
School: Schoolwork- I’m a solid 3.5 GPA student, lets hope I can keep it that way, Mom keeps on pushing me for a scholarship.
Home: The family goes to church every Sunday. Mom because she believes; Dad because it is good for business; me because I’m their kid, and both of my folks need to keep up appearances.

Super secret identity:
Name: Maximillian “Max” Philbert Fogg
Backstory
• When did you first put on the mask? Why?
There was a fight. Super heroes vs. Super Villians, so what’s new? Dr. Chemical vs. ExPatriot, Burnout, and Hayte. A murderous villiian being chased down by even more murderous heroes, whose form of justice was putting him six feet under. Oh and this time the super battle happened in my part of town. Sure, they saved the day and Dr. Chemical got a dirt nap, but the collateral damage was bad, real bad. I was part of the collateral damage, but I was lucky. Right place, right time, one in a million chance that I got dosed by just the right amount of crap while everyone else got blown up, charred, or some such. I mean if you can call being torn down to your base elements and reconstructed pretty much the same, better maybe? Superpowered none the less. With powers I feel the responsibility to DO something, but know I have to do it responsibly. I was raised to care for the living by taking care of the dead. Now I can take care of the living, by keeping them alive. Picked the name The Grey Fox because I really had no idea, but it was on the flavor text of a Magic Card and thought it sounded cool. I’ll keep it until I can think of something better.
• Why do you keep a secret identity?
God, where to begin…I wish I had a secret identity BEFORE getting powers, but more about that later. My dad runs the Priesch Family Funeral Home. (Kept the old name for recognition, good for business he says). Anyway, we were packed for about a month and a half burying friends and neighbors. It was hard on me, hard on everyone, but one night I overheard my dad and mom talking. We had just done the service for the McAlister family and the relatives from out of town spat nothing but vitriol about those “loose cannons! That killed their son and grandchildren. “Who do they think they’re saving?!”. My mom and dad agreed with them, and that night I heard my dad cry. This had really gotten to him and mom. They would have kittens if not disown me if they knew I was a super. So really to keep it from them, I’ve got to keep it from everybody.
• Who, outside of the team, knows about your dual identity? No one. Man, I’m not even going to let my team know, they’d kick me out for sure! I’m figuring out how to tell Ernie, I kind of feel obligated to. I’d like to tell the cute redhead in Chemistry, maybe she’d finally notice me…
• Who thinks the worst of your masked identity? My parents if they payed attention to supers in the news I’m sure (especially since I have to work kind of local you know?) Really though Father Dunaway. He’s the priest at church. Crime fighters are just as bad as criminals he says, “Let God judge them” and all that. Anyway, I have to hear it constantly because mom is a devout Catholic. Worse off is I get in one little news article and it seems like it is his personal crusade to use me (if he only knew it was really me!) as an example to the entire congregation.
• Why do you care about the team? My parents run the local funeral home. I’ve been a freak at school ever since I can remember. Either parents don’t want their kids associating with me, or the kids themselves don’t. Its not like I’m completely friendless, but the few friends I have I only really see at school, no one wants to come over. My best friend since kindergarten, Ernie came out of the closet about a year ago. The other kids at school everyone assumes I’m gay because we’ve hung out since, forever, of course. The thing is that when Ernie came out, he expected me to also (we both liked showtunes, and poetry, etc. etc. so I don’t blame him or anything) but when I turned him down, he felt slighted and has given me the cold shoulder ever since. It doesn’t help that Mom forbids me to date until I’m 18, so it isn’t like I have a girlfriend to counter accusations. So yeah, I’m pretty much a social pariah. Even the goths don’t even really like me because I’m a generally pleasant guy. Just a pleasant guy with a superficial social life- seriously you would think the nickname “Formaldehyde Fogg” would have gotten old by now. So basically I spend a lot of time on the computer playing MMOs and stuff because I can be anyone there, and “anyone” is pretty much an improvement for me. I learned it was better to just keep my head down and fade into the background- but I put on my mask and I can start fresh and be anything.

Relationships with the rest of the team:
Kristoph knew me in real life before I got super powers
Jeff Reynolds asked me about my identify and I refused to tell them, not too sure if I can trust them.
Apollo and Artimis has influence over me, the seem to really have their act together
