Character creation

  • So you've decided to create a character? Wonderful! Please read everything under this tab before getting started.

Tombstone is a strict realism dream, meaning your character must be a human.

We put a lot of research into our characters and try to stick as close to reality as possible, but that is not to say you can't have some fun and be creative. While we do not allow magic, shapeshifting, or any other fantasy components, we do not closely monitor character backgrounds, ages, etc. We want you to have fun, and if this were real life, most of our characters would be dead by 30 from gunshot wounds or tuberculosis.

Now let's talk some character specifics:

People moved west for a number of reasons in the nineteenth century, but by far the most prevalent motive was the availability of land. Other motives included mining opportunities, silver, and the gold rush, the expanding railroad, and the lure of adventure.

The frontier was occupied not only by indigenous people, but also by African Americans, Spanish colonialists and others of European descent.

Life was full of dangers. Sandstorms, tornados, and hurricanes plagued their ramshackle homes. The natives of the land fought to keep it their own. And when lawlessness rose its head, men had to take justice into their own hands.

Tombstone attracted people from all different walks of life. This is where your character comes in:

    Gender and sexuality
We're not going to police how your character identifies, but please be aware, the 1800s were not kind to the LGBTQ population.

While the American frontier is often seen as a masculine territory, women were among the hundreds of thousands of settlers who moved across the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. The West offered women a myriad of opportunities not available to them back East. While we encourage strong, independent women, please be aware that life on the American frontier was difficult for females and they were often limited to certain occupations.

    Occupations
Here's a list of common jobs many people held on the American frontier. Your character does not necessarily need to have one of these jobs, but this is helpful to refer to when creating a character.
