Skeira's eyes fluttered open as she stretched and slipped out of bed. She smiled as she changed and did her hair. Today was the day. The day they were leaving for Andefesis and The Seven Storms. The day she could prove herself as better than her step-siblings. She had been chosen to prove her worth in the most important competition in existence and she wasn't about to give up the opportunity.
At breakfast, no one said much. Her mother stared at her plate and didn't look up the whole meal. She didn't even blink when Skeira's father called for everyone to get ready to see the competitors off(and exchanged reassuring hugs with her step-brother Elrand, who was the other competitor).
And she just stood there with her hands clasped in front of her when Skeira's cousin Dianare, her sister Teedesa, and her best friend Selemn hugged her with tears in their eyes.
But, as her father made his usual speech about the pride of Mahara and how we would do our people proud at The Seven Storms, her mother reached over and started braiding her hair. When Skeira's father was finished with his speech to the people, her mother had braided her hair into an elaborate twist that framed her face in a way that was beautiful, but also strong. She had nimble hands and the braids were tight and neat.
She looked at Skeira with tears in her eyes and just kissed her silently goodbye.
It wasn't until Skeira was on the dragon that she frantically waved goodbye.
"Bye, mom! I love you! I'll be back! I promise! Take care of Teedesa!"
And then they were gone, hidden among the clouds, as we disappeared in the colors of the swirling vortex that led to Andefesis.
