Freelancers is the generic name given by The Society to all Hunters, Sensitives (Those aware of their psychic or magical potential) and all those aware of the supernatural realm in some capacity, but those who are not members of The Society. Whilst there are organisations and groups of Freelancers, these tend to be much smaller and less well-equipped than the globe-spanning Society, however those that are aware of The Society's existence tend towards being fiercely independent of The Society, looking upon them with contempt, envy, hatred or just plain mistrust. Because they have no overarching authority or organisation, there is no clear estimate as to how many Freelancers there are, but given the broad criteria they are likely to outnumber The Society by a heavy margin... though most agree that they also have a corresponding higher fatality rate. It is an adage within The Society that 'Beside every Freelancer you meet lies four graves; one for his past, one for his future, one for his enemies and the other for his friends'.

By contrast, The Society tries its damnedest to recruit as many Freelancers as it can; experienced Hunters are always in demand, though it is often the case that those Freelancers that The Society would dearly love to recruit to their side tend to be the ones who dislike it the most.

Whilst Freelancers lack the resources of The Society, they more than make up for it in fire; no one else is more passionate and more dedicated than a Freelancer, and those who survive tend to be able to match Senior Knights, at the least, and many would be considered to be Elites by The Society if they ever joined. Most Freelancers tend to prefer hunting Demons, Vampires and Werewolves, though it is not unknown for them to go after Ghouls, Ghosts and other more neutral-leaning creatures.

For their part, The Society tends to ignore Freelancers when it can't recruit them, and most Freelancers are content to ignore them in turn.
