Character Creation

  • The following species are allowed in Umbra Munte.

    Canines:
Gray Wolf - Eurasian wolves, Tundra wolves, and Timber wolves are the most common subspecies in East Europe. Variations not native to this area, such as the Arctic wolf, are not allowed.
      Red Fox
Dog - Bucovina Shepherds, Romanian Mioritic Shepherds, Romanian Raven Shepherds, Borzoi, Transylvanian Hound are all specific "breeds" native to the area. Keeping the time era in mind, it's easier to go with types of dogs, instead of breeds. For example, sight hounds, scent hounds, herding, etc. Very mixed or mutts would also be common.
Wolfdogs - Some dogs and wolf dog mixes can be allowed. Please keep in mind that having the species/subspecies nondescript, will lend credibility to its chosen design without disrupting the flow of UM's continuity.

    Birds:
      Raven
      Steppe Eagle
      Kestrel
      Barn Owl
      Tawny Owl
Songbirds - Also called passerines or perching birds, this covers just about any small, hopping bird. A few distinct species include the goldcrest, woodlark, great tit, and Spanish sparrow.

    Felines:
      European Wildcat
Cat - Much like dogs, domestic cats are unlikely to have any specific breed.
      Lynx
Persian Leopard - While not native, Persian leopards migrated to Transylvania.

    Ungulates (Hooved Animals):
      Pig
      Wild Boar
      Red Deer
      Fallow Deer
      Roe Deer
      Elk
      Horse

    Rodents and Lagomorphs:
      European Rabbit
      European Hare

    Reptiles:
      Snakes
      Lizards
  • Keep in Mind...

This is a mostly realistic dream as far as character creation goes. Use common sense! If you are unsure, ask a staff member.

Certain features of an animal may be exaggerated, such as sharper fangs, longer claws, strange colored eyes, as these can be mutations. The size of your character should reflect the species, but bigger and taller doesn't mean better. Neons, super bright colors in random places, spots, stripes, mohawks, clothing, sparkle wolves, etc. are not allowed.

Animals can wear crude adornments like feathers or paint to help identify belonging to a clan, tribe, or pack. They can have markings made from blood, berries, or other organic matter so long you can readily explain how they procure and apply it. Usually a bird or mouse ally could help with these things, since they are a little more dexterous than other animals.

Finally, this list is not exhaustive! Ancient Transylvania has an extraordinarily diverse ecosystem.

From Wikipedia, here is a list of birds, a list of mammals, and a more general list of fauna to give you an idea of just how many species you can use. Given that Umbra Munte takes place between the 1100s and 1200s, any species from this recently extinct animals list is also allowed!
