The Emperor
Emperor Ogami Tanjiro has ruled over Uyoshin for two hundred years. His yokai army were once mortal loyalists, but their souls were sacrificed to imbue the Blade of The Black Phoenix. Back when Tanjiro was the Daimyo of the Kuraun clan, Demon Sword Master Sanjei gave him this weapon as a pact. A deal was supposed to be made. Should he claim the Emperor’s throne using the power of the Black Phoenix Blade, he will summon Sanjei into the mortal realm. However, Tanjiro feared the consequences of bringing the Demon Sword Master into this world, and chose not to fulfill his end of the bargain. Enraged, Sanjei attempted to control Tanjiro’s yokai army through the Black Phoenix Blade, but Tanjiro was prepared. The Prayers of the Shield wrapped layers of enchantments around the weapon, rendering the Demon Sword Master powerless. It is believed that the Emperor’s lifespan, as well as those of the Black Phoenix army, are fueled by Sanjei’s weapon. Destroying it could end The Age of Occlusion, but doing so could usher in the Terror of Sanjei.

The Black Phoenix Army
The Black Phoenix Army were loyal warriors of Ogami Tanjiro, back when he was Daimyo of the Kuraun Clan. Their soul sacrifice turned them into monsters, who still serve him to this day. Their strength and abilities vary, as they are an amalgamation of the underworld. They operate as an extension of the Emperor, a secret police that terrorizes the people of Uyoshin into submission. Without enchanted weapons, artifacts and magically imbued combat arts, a regular mortal does not stand a chance against them.

The Seven Clans
Long before the folly of man brought forth the age of darkness, Uyoshin was founded upon the Way of the Chakra by The Stardust Shogun, Hirada Yoshifumi. Less than a thousand years ago, the age of The Battling Eras came to a close as Hirada Yoshifumi seized control of Uyoshin after hard fought wars with many clans. Blessed by Emperor Togan as The Stardust Shogun, the ambitious ruler ushered in a time of peace, reconstruction, and good fortune. Yoshifumi was a charismatic and wise leader, adopting an age old principle from The Prayers of the Shield that involved the Seven Chakras. It exemplified natural harmony, for each clan embodied a facet to the overall well-being of Uyoshin as a whole.

The Rūto Clan. Considered the base and foundation of Uyoshin, this ideology is best reserved for the oldest clans whose lineage dates back to the earliest forms of known civilization. They are traditionalists who believe in taking care of each other before oneself. Their culture is influenced by survival, and living off of the land, so to speak. They pride themselves at being tough and durable people.

The Senkotsu Clan. While the Ruto are more rooted in practicality, the Senkotsu thrive off of art, music, and emotion. Often called the ‘Eye of The Creative Storm’, their perpetual renaissance is a cultural influence across Uyoshin. They are liberal idealists who believe in the pursuit of expression. While they pride themselves as a non-discriminate, accepting culture, they are often viewed as an unreliable and whimsical people. Clearly, the Senkotsu go by the beat of their own drum, which can wear on one's patience if you expect immediate results.

The Taiyō Clan. The Taiyō clan is the energy and life force of Uyoshin. Their expansive farmlands can stretch to as far as the eye can see. Rice, barley and wheat are their primary crops, which circulate through the four provinces year round. The geography within Raiden province has the most fertile soil compared to the rest of the country. The people here are honest, hard workers. They believe in perpetual motion, to simply be doing, and staying active. Stagnation, lackadaisical tendencies, and general laziness is frowned upon. They are a very hospitable people, but you are expected to return the favor and earn your keep.

The Shinzō Clan. The heart of Uyoshin. The Shinzō clan is surrounded by a giant forest that has multiple trade routes, expressways, and roads that connect all of the clans and territories of Uyoshin together. This is the birthplace of The Prayers of the Shield, a group of enchanted priests and priestesses who worship the Benevolent Spirits. While there are different religious beliefs throughout the land, most of them are variations derived from their teachings. Because of this, compassion and selflessness are instilled into Shinzō culture. They are also known for their unparalleled archery, hunting, and botany.

The Onsei Clan. The voice of Uyoshin. Their coastal territory thrives off of fisheries and trade through its many harbors. They are known for being quick horseback riders and faster sailors. Because of those traits, they are often given the task of spreading the Emperor's word throughout the country. Onsei are known to either be educated people, or very skilled in whatever profession they pursue. An Onsei clansmen is an eloquent speaker, their very best are usually the most tenacious nobles in the Emperor's court.

The Daisan'nome Clan. The Daisan'nome are similar to the Rūto clan in that they are a nomadic clan that proudly endures the harsh environment of their lands. Where the Rūto embrace the blistering cold of the south, the Daisan'nome welcome the burning sands of the eastern Ameratsu deserts. They are a mysterious group known for magic and clairvoyance, who look to the constellations for guidance.

The Kuraun Clan. The crown of Uyoshin and original clan of Ogami Tanjiro before he transcended to Emperor. The Kuraun are known for their most skilled and fiercest warriors. They serve as the Emperor's royal guard. While most of them have turned into monsters, over two hundred years have passed, allowing a migration of outsiders to settle in and perform provincial upkeep duties that the yokai don't care for.

The Land
The pangean land of Uyoshin is divided into four main provinces: Ameratsu, Susano, Raiden, & O-kuni.

The Northern Province of Ameratsu is the mainland of the Emperor. Its territory is split between the Kuraun and Daisan’nome clans. It contains the giant white mountain range known as The Ittoki Pearls, which horseshoe around Fortune City. The Emperor’s palace is secured along the tallest peak, glistening in gold above everything else. Lake Mikami surrounds Fortune City, curving into the Ittoki Pearls, completing the Circle of Truth which represents the Emperor’s domain. Beyond the circle, the mountainous west is ruled by the Kuraun, leaving the coastal deserts of the east in the hands of the Daisan’nome.

The Western Province of Susano is divided between the Onsei and Shinzo clans. The Onsei clan’s domain is in the upper west region, bordering the Kuraun territories. Their main fortresses hug the coastline, overlooking the Igan Sea. The Shinzō clan occupies the mainland of Susano, their mega fortress taking up a significant portion of the central line forests.

The Eastern Province of Raiden is shared between the Taiyō and Senkotsu clans. It is known as the most beautiful location in all of Uyoshin, rich with inspiring landscapes and architectural flair. It comes as no surprised that such an artistic haven is shared between two of the most richly cultured factions in the land. The Taiyō clan inhabits the open valleys and cavernous mines of the west and mid-central areas. The Senkotsu reign over the serene beachways and tropical open valleys that snake along the mainland

The Southern Province of O-kuni is called ‘The Blade of Uyoshin’ for its sword-like formation that crescents the lower end of the country. The climate is more treacherous and unforgiving, riddled with snowy mountain ranges, swamps, and bayous. The Rūto clan has ruled these lands since the beginning of known civilization. While there are four large fortress cities (Cesu, Gijo, Shi, and Togan) strategically spaced throughout the land, the various nomadic settlements and minor tribes migrate between them.

The Prayers of the Shield
The Prayers of the Shield are a sect of enchanted priests. They worship the Benevolent Spirits, who in return, grant powers to repel the underworld’s influence. However, the overwhelming energy of the Black Phoenix Blade has crippled their own influence. They reluctantly pledge their services to the Emperor, mainly to protect the world from the Demon Sword Master’s weapon.

The Celestial Plain: Takamagahara

Another name for Ame (Heaven) or Takamagahara (Plain of High Heaven), it is the realm in which the heavenly gods dwell, connected to the earth via the Floating Bridge of Heaven. Among the heavenly gods, dwell benevolent natured spirits who gained entry to Ame through their deeds in life, achieving apotheosis. Charged with protecting the balance of the world between Ame and Yomi, they often maintain the middle realm of Earth below through The Prayers of the Shield.

The Underworld: Yomi

Also known as Yomi (World of Darkness) it is the polluted realm beneath the earth where the dead embark on their long, hard trial of the afterlife on their way to rebirth. Yomi is so dark, each spirit's hitodama lights their way. Those that fall to temptation to seek out the darkness and follow the tempting calls of demons offering promises of power, wealth and life or fall prey to the small oasis' beyond their path often end up having their soul devoured by demons. Spirits who have experienced great trauma in life can often stray from the path, sometimes long before reaching Yomi resulting in lost, restless spirits.

With the growing influence of the darkness more and more spirits are drawn from their path, lead astray and even corrupted. Yomi is polluted with a foggy haze riddled with the stench of death and in the darkness many powerful demons as ancient as the realm have forged their domains out of the desolate landscape, hungry for more souls to corrupt and fill their armies or devour for themselves.

The Earth

On Earth, many spirits of animalistic nature dwell part of neither Ame or Yomi. They dwell alongside Yōkai and Yūrei (ghosts) alike in a world. Many Yōkai native to the Earth are often referred to as "inbetweeners", Yōkai that range diversely from the malevolent to the mischievous, or occasionally bring good fortune to those who encounter them. This varies greatly depending on the induvidual or group.
