  • Their Origin

The Dawn Space Corps is a massive fleet of ships that was commissioned by an international effort to explore the infinite universe in hopes of finding new planets for humans to colonize, and was one of two fleets built for that purpose, led by the United States and Japan. Initially, the fleet was only going to consist of a number of research ships, built for that purpose. However, plans quickly changed as the ever expanding Sun became too much to bear. The ever increasing heat and luminosity made it difficult for life to survive on Earth; numerous species were dying every day and in order to combat this, numerous other ships were commissioned for the fleet. Several residential, combat, prison, and an academy ship had been developed in order to help the escaping humans to live comfortably as they wait to find new homes. As the fleet was being developed, researchers on Earth had combed the night skies, looking in every direction for a system that would potentially, serve as a home for the surviving humans. Nearly fifteen years had passed since the DSC had begun construction and they had detected a system with three possible Earth-like planets. Though it was about twelve thousand light years away, it seemed like it would be the best option for the DSC.

Nearly two centuries had passed since the construction started and conditions on Earth were progressively getting worse. The ice caps have completely melted away, sea levels have risen by several feet. Coastal areas have been completely flooded, farms have slowly begun dying out, food shortages are common place. All in all, things were not looking good for the little blue marble. Fortunately, the Dawn Space Corps were finally ready to leave Earth’s orbit and begin their journey in interstellar space. Unfortunately, they couldn’t take everyone aboard. Even with the many, many ships, they could only fit around 1 billion people; way less than 10% of the current human population. Their counterpart, the Dusk Space Corps were only able to fit around the same amount of people. Though the decision was widely criticized by many, they had figured it’d be best to bring aboard those who are capable of contributing to the human survival. They boarded the wealthier citizens of Earth, a number of farmers, renowned academic instructors, high ranking military officers, and beloved politicians. Electing Demarcus Robinson as the fleet’s inaugural Commander. The Dusk Space Corps had taken similar citizens and left en route towards a system 27,000 light years away. The citizens not taken aboard were left to fend for themselves and to this day, it’s unclear of what exactly happened to the citizens of Earth. It’s unknown if they managed to escape the dying sun or if they perished in the ever increasing heat.

Countless generations had passed since they left Earth and nearly 10,000 years later, they had finally arrived in system Robinson. Those readings all those centuries ago had been proven true, they had discovered three planets that could serve as potential homes for the humans living on the DSC’s residential ships. Before they could effectively begin colonizing these planets, intense research was needed. They needed to ensure that atmospheric conditions, temperature, and weather patterns would be compatible with human life. They also needed to be sure that the soil would provide the needed nutrients for agriculture to take place. Of course, this wasn’t the only thing they needed to account for any potential lifeforms living on the planets. After it had been determined that Rulara, Aria, and Elea would be safe for human habitation, they had begun expeditions on them. Expeditions to Rulara and Aria have run into a few problems, the dominant life forms on both planets appear to be violently territorial, and even coming close to their territories has warranted unprecedented violence towards them. Until they can figure out how to establish peaceful contact with them, the expeditions of Rulara have led researchers to attempt developing bases on the waters of the ocean planet, hoping it’ll be safer than establishing bases on the islands. Several bases have been developed on Aria, far from the known territories of the living races.

Elea’s research has gone smoothly for the most part, the tribes of Elea aren’t nearly as violent, though most are very territorial. Nearly two hundred years had passed since they arrived in system Robinson and they have finally managed to establish peaceful contact with one of Elea’s tribes. Thanks to the efforts of the newest Fleet Commander, Isabella Sharpe, and the captain of the Kalispell division, Major Captain Steven Marshall, they had established peaceful relations with the Kun and were granted the right to build a base within their territory, they had also granted them the right to trade with the Kun and in return, the DSC would provide the tribe protection in times of need. Today, further progress is steadily being made with Elea, though on the downside, little progress has been made with Rulara and Aria. The Anurca of Rulara have been very resistant to making contact with the DSC while the tribes of Aria have steered clear from them, unsure if whether or not they could trust them. Because of the difficulty with these two planets, plenty of research has gone into the possibility of searching for other systems to colonize, but of course, there’s still several decades to go before they can officially put them into action.

    Basic Roles for Ranks:

Fleet Commander - They hold the highest authority of not just one ship, but the entirety of the fleet. They can override the orders of lower ranking crew members, they can freely hand out promotions and court martials, and can freely order ships to be deployed or returned to base. Their orders are law, failure to follow them can result in immediate dismissal. There can only be one Fleet Commander at any given time, as it is not a promotion regularly given out, rather a new Fleet Commander will only be ushered in if they were chosen by the old Commander. The current Fleet Commander is Isabella Sharpe.

Major Commander - They hold a significant amount of authority, though they do not have the power to deploy and order ships to return to base, they can hand out promotions and court martials, though they must be approved by the FC. They however do not have any authority to declare military action, as this is solely dictated by the General and FC. Their authority is only limited to those working on their quadrant, though their orders can be overridden by the FC. All Major Commanders are chosen by the new Fleet Commander. Daniel Horton commands Quadrant Dawn, obviously Isabella Sharpe commands Quadrant Dusk, Sadie Hester commands Quadrant Ruby, and Cynthia Hooper commands Quadrant Ruby.

Private & Minor Commanders - Though they are important pilots, they do not have as many privileges as a Major Commander. They command the major ships not controlled by a Major Commander. They are hand chosen by the new Fleet Commander. Though they hold authority over their ships, they must ask for permission from their quadrant’s Major Commander. These commanders are chosen by the Major Commanders. They cannot hand out promotions or court martials.

Major & Minor Captains - They command smaller, less important ships and report directly to the lead researchers, their Major Commanders, and the Fleet Commanders. They’re often responsible for leading research missions, picking the explorers that’ll partake. Unlike the others, they can be earned through promotion, though this is difficult.

Generals & Colonels - They are military experts that are used during times of crisis, along with the Fleet Commander, they’ll help lead the ships in crisis situations, deploying combat ships as needed, they’re also responsible for training soldiers and guards. They can hand out promotions, but they do not have the authority to give people command over ships, that falls to the Fleet Commander. The Colonels act as assistants to the generals, though they do not have the authority to declare any kind of military action, that falls to the General.

Those below the rank of Minor Captain have no real authority on anything besides those who rank below them. In order to work up the ranks, they’ll have to prove themselves of being capable of leading people in an effective manner. They will have various roles, though most of them revolve around the fleet’s military, they can have roles in all of the ships. They could work in the research, agriculture, residential, academic, or justice departments. In order to clarify where they work, all personnel wear name tags informing others what departments they work in and which ship they primarily work with.

    MOTH - Mothership
    SCI - Research
    COM - Military
    AGRI - Agriculture
    RES - Residential
    ACAD - Academics
    JUST - Justice
    UNA - Unassigned/New Recruit

So, for example, a researcher would have a name tag that looked like SCI. Captain Sadie Hester - NV. Other times, some personnel work for minor ships, so they’d end up looking like this: AGRI. 1st Private Walter McLain - SDBW. The latter letters represent the ship they work for. Sadie works for ship Nevada, while Walter works for Brown (BW), while Brown reports directly to ship South Dakota, which means Walter also works for South Dakota.
  • The Fleet

    Fleet Commander: Isabella Sharpe

The Dawn Space Corps were started as a part of an international effort led by the United States and Japan, but also had plenty of help from Canada, Mexico, England, China, Russia, Ireland, France, Italy, India, Australia, New Zealand and Germany in order to not only explore the cosmos, but to avoid a painful death at the hands of the brightening sun. It took nearly three centuries to complete the project, but after they had completed the project, they made haste to leave the solar system. The DSC weren't the only ones to leave the planet on that day, another group, the New Horizons Corps had left alongside them, though they went in the other direction. The DSC had left for the Andromeda Galaxy, searching for an Earth-like planet that would be suitable for human habitation. The fleet consists of numerous ships, each of them named after a US State, each ship plays a certain role. Most of these ships have a number of smaller ships playing similar roles to their parent ships, each of them being named after counties or cities in those states.

After several thousand years in space, they have finally arrived at system Robinson. Aria, Rulara, and Elea were the only planets that really caught the attention of the DSC. In order to study the planets, several ships apart of the research’s fleets had been tasked with monitoring the climates, geologic activity, and life activity of the three planets. The USS Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas were assigned to Aria. The USS California, Florida, and North Carolina were assigned to Rulara. Lastly, the USS Oregon, Washington D.C, Montana, and Idaho were tasked with Elea.

Each group of ships belong to a certain quadrant, captained by a Major Commander hand chosen by the Fleet Commander. All ships have a codename that can be used to easily find a certain ship.

    Technology:

Spacecraft: Considering that the Dawn Space Corps have been around for over 12,000 years and that this setting is roughly 1 billion+ years into the future, it’s expected that they’d be quite advanced. Much of their advancement had gone into the development of spacecraft, with the U.S.S Kansas being the most technologically impressive craft that had ever been developed by human hands. Many of the DSC’s important spacecrafts are very sophisticated, capable of great things. Most notably, many of the major crafts of capable of traveling faster than light. However, only a select few ships are designed for combat and because of this, most ships aren’t equipped with the most sophisticated of weapons with many of them equipped with machine guns, rocket launchers, and a variety of other weapons. However, the ships that are specifically designed for combat hold far more sophisticated weaponry. In addition to the machine guns and rocket launchers, they also hold a variety of beam weapons. They can produce blasts of electricity to attack with and of course, no high tech spaceship would be complete without laser blasters. These are generated by heated lights and are used to drill holes into enemy combatants. The crafts of the DSC have a variety of purposes, but most of them are primarily used for research purposes. All ships are powered by solar energy, they feed on the light emitted nearby stars and convert the light into fuel for the ship. Thanks to the near endless source of starlight in the universe, the ships of the DSC have a near endless supply have fuel.

Other Vehicles: On the surface, vehicles are considerably more simple. They use terrestrial, airborne, and aquatic vehicles for a variety of purposes. The grounded vehicles, much like the fleet’s spacecraft are solar powered, using specialized airless tires to help navigate rough terrain, these airless tires are nearly indestructible and are designed to withstand nearly any kind of terrain with ease. The vehicles themselves are fairly sturdy, being strong enough to withstand the blast of a nuclear bomb; of course this is just a theory and hasn’t actually been tested yet. The airborne vehicles are used to travel across the skies for expeditions that require researchers to wander away from their ship for long periods of time. These vehicles use high speed propellers to achieve lift off and then switch to jet propulsion systems to move forward at incredible speeds. Last but not least, they use a number of aquatic vehicles, though these ones are primarily meant for Rulara.

Weapons: There have been numerous useful advancements to the weapons that the Dawn Space Corps have made. Rather than using traditional ammunition, all firearms use electricity as their means of attack. Loading the weapons require specialized batteries that charge the firearm’s shots. A typical pistol can hold enough charge to fire off 72 shots, though once a battery has run out of charge, it usually takes around 12 hours to fully charge. Rifles are fairly common as well and come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and calibers. Beyond simple handguns and rifles, launchers and explosives are commonly used as well. Despite their advancements in firearms and explosives, bladed weapons are commonly used. Many of these can discharge electricity, though like the firearms, they require specialized batteries in order to use the electricity. Each battery for these blades can last for up to 3 hours if used continuously. The weapons are primarily developed within the Laramie, Park, and Natrona Divisions of the Wyoming Branch.

Robotics: No intergalactic society is complete without the use of robotics, and robots are used primarily within the residential and agricultural areas of the DSC. Robots play a variety of roles, but primarily are used to aid the humans in their work. Some are built as housekeepers, some are built as personal guards. AI is a developing science, even after all these decades, this has proven to be a difficult thing to develop. The AI technology, codenamed the Milwaukee Project, is primarily going to be used for research and military purposes, but there’s a likely chance that the public will have access to it as well. Within the farming industries, robots are used primarily to harvest and plant crops, though they don’t have much of a role beyond this.

Computers: As one would expect, computers have become an irreplaceable part of the DSC, they’re used for nearly every purpose imaginable. Over the centuries, they have become more and more sophisticated. Today, they’re primarily used for research and scientific purposes, computers located on the mothership are strong enough to detect planets from over 75,000 light years away. Though most of specifically designed for research purposes, personal computers have become fairly sophisticated themselves. There’s not a single household within the DSC that doesn’t have a computer.

Exploratory Tools: Beyond the above, the DSC has developed a number of nifty tools for those who are sent to the surface to do some exploration. Among them is a tablet used for a variety of purposes; these tablets can record videos, take pictures, function as journals, can be used to communicate with others on the surface, and can do a variety of other things. These tablets are completely waterproof and can function completely up to depths of around 2,000 feet below the surface. Before any researcher is sent to the surface, they’re equipped with a number of tools including a headset used to communicate directly with their ship and the Branch’s commander, along with a specialized canteen used to purify saltwater and other impure waters in safe, drinkable water and a number of flashlights.

Healthcare: The DSC has made incredible advances when it comes to the healthcare available. Thanks to these advances, nearly every known disease is curable, even the most severe injuries can be treated, and perhaps more importantly, they have unlocked ways to artificially expand a person’s lifespan. Through a surgical process, they replace the natural tissue of a person’s vital organs, such as the heart, lungs, stomach, and kidneys, with that of a specialized synthetic tissue that effectively slows the aging process thanks to this tissue rapidly replacing dying or dysfunctional cells, it kills cancerous cells and foreign objects as soon as they’re detected, and they can almost instantly heal from most minor injuries. Thanks to this, a person can live much longer than usual. Thanks to the advances in medicine, a person will on average live for about 200 years, but with the synthetic tissue, a person can live well over 750 years. This process is known as the Artificial Immortality, as the synthetic tissue can easily be replaced if needed, thus further expanding their lifespans. The surgery itself takes about 12 hours to go through, but most people consider it to be worth it.

    Education:

Primary/Elementary School: Education is mandatory for all children across the DSC and one a child turns six, they must be enrolled in the Branch’s primary school, children will spend seven years here, learning the basics a child would need. Basic mathematics, literacy, science, history, English, among many other classes are taught here. The school year begins on January 1st and ends on November 30th with two major breaks throughout the school year. The students get a single, month long break between December 1st and 31st, as well as a two week long break between July 1st and July 14th.

Middle/Junior High School: After graduating from their final year in primary school, students move onto Junior High, going through they will be attending classes for the next four years. Unlike previously, students will have more freedom in what classes they attend, they do this in hopes of preparing the students for their career choice. Some students might focus on classes that’ll shoot them through the rankings of the Dawn Space Corps, others take classes to learn how to raise a family, among many other things.

High School: After junior high has been completed, they move onto their final four years where their custom made schedules will continue to be a factor in their future careers. If students manage to maintain at least a 3.5GPA while they’re in high school, they’ll be granted a choice between attending their Branch’s university or the more prestigious U.S.S South Carolina, the academy in which the finest members of the DSC are educated. Of course, they can choose not to attend either, but it’s highly recommended that they do.

Post-Secondary Education: Now, just because a student may not have maintained the desired GPA throughout high school doesn’t mean they won’t be able to attend the Branch’s university, they just won’t have the option to attend the U.S.S South Carolina. Once in the university, students will have the option to pursue any career they desire, of course, they’ve also got the option to not attend if they’d rather not.

U.S.S South Carolina: If a student has maintained the required GPA, they’ll have the option to attend the largest academy in the DSC. Many of those who attend the academy find themselves working in well paying, illustrious positions within the fleet. In fact, every single Fleet Commander has attended the school at some point, many of the Major Commanders and Captains have also attended the academy. They’ll teach students advanced mathematics, literacy, English, history, science, and will delve into classes that will better prepare them for potential careers in the DSC. They’ll teach the students a variety of combat styles, including weapons, close quarters, and even how to fight while flying. Piloting, survival skills, among many other courses are taught here.

    Economy/Culture:

Market: The market is very free and has very little influence from the fleet’s judicial department. People are free to start up businesses as often as they like, as long as they have the resources for it. The Fleet Commander believes that an economy will grow smoothly if the government keeps out of it and so far, her beliefs have worked quite well. The economy has done fairly well and poverty is nearly non-existent within the Fleet, wage gaps are fairly low, and everyone seems to get their fair share.

Jobs/Workforce: It seems like new jobs are opening up everyday and thanks to this, there’s always new opportunities for people to find stable careers. The unemployed percentage is fairly low, with less than 3% of the DSC being unemployed.

Work Ethics: Many of the people aboard the fleet are very hard working people and will do whatever they can to ensure that them and their families have comfortable lives, of course, you’ve got a few outliers who prefer to sit back and watch as everyone else does the work for them.

Compassion/Friendliness: Overall, the fleet’s population would be described as fairly friendly; most people are willing to help others when they need it and peaceful discussions are often seen throughout the fleet, but like all populations, there’s a few bad apples that ruin it for everyone.

Religion: Religion is largely seen as unimportant by much of the population, they see it as nothing more than a distraction from what’s really important and because of this, atheism and agnosticism are on the rise while many faiths are slowly disappearing, but that’s not to say that religion is entirely dead. There’s plenty of people who still openly worship their god(s), but unlike today where you could find a church on every corner, there’s usually only one or two churches per ship.

Entertainment: Like one would expect, entertainment is still a huge part of the fleet’s culture. Sporting events, cinema, television, music, and video games contribute to the nation’s economy. There’s even intergalactic sports leagues that has teams from all over the fleet competing with each other.

Marriage & Family Life: A person’s love life is still very important, even after so many years through space. People are falling in love and marrying practically everyday, children are born frequently, though because of the limited space within the DSC, a couple are only allowed to have up to two children. Domestic and child abuse are serious matters and those caught guilty of either crimes are often immediately put on trial, and if they’re proven guilty, they’re often locked away for life.

    Military/Fleet:

Promotion & Demotion: Like any military, a person may be promoted or demoted depending on their actions, however only the quadrant’s Major Commander and Fleet Commander can promote or demote people, and they will only do so if the person in question has proved themselves worthy of either. Too many demotions will often result in a court martial. No matter how hard you work, you cannot simply be promoted to Major or Fleet Commander. In order to reach either of those rankings, you have to be hand chosen by the current Fleet Commander.

The Fleet Commander: This is arguably the most important role in the entirety of the DSC, they have sole authority over everything that happens within the Fleet. Orders from them are absolute, and disobeying them could result in demotions or court martials. They have the authority to declare war, to deploy ships, to commission new ships, among many other things. Most importantly, they’re also responsible for selecting the Major Commanders and the incoming Fleet Commander. Currently, Isabella Sharpe holds the title of Fleet Commander.

Branches & Divisions: Thanks to the huge number of ships that make up the DSC, in order to keep things organized, the ships have been separated into Branches and Division. Each branch is captained by one of the many Major Commanders while the Branch has numerous divisions along with it, these divisions are also known as satellite ships. For instance, the mothership; the Kansas Branch is surrounded by nine divisions or satellite ships. These satellite ships are run by either a Major Captain or a Minor Commander. These divisions will answer directly to their respective Major Commander in case anything happens, they need to get permission from them before they launch expeditions on the planet’s surface, before they can deploy other ships, or before they can hire someone to work on their ship.

Departments of the Dawn Space Corps: The DSC has numerous departments that handle different day to day operations. This is displayed on a worker’s name tag, When joining the DSC, all new recruits will eventually be assigned to one of them. Before they’re assigned, new recruits are subjected to five different tests, two of them test their bodies and the other three test their minds, and depending on how they do, they’ll be assigned their branch, division, and department they’ll be working within. For example, a person’s name tag might be displayed like this: SCI. Major Captain Steven Marshall - MTKI. This signifies what department they work for and the branch and division they serve. Captain Marshall is the Captain of Kalispell Division, though he answers directly to Major Commander Levi Parsons, commander of the Montana Branch.

Mothership (MOTH.) - Those who work here will work directly under the command of the Fleet Commander, they will hold a variety of different positions ranging from research to defense to judicial practices.
Research (SCI.) - Those who work here are responsible for aiding in the scientific progress within the DSC. Some of these researchers will work directly on the surface of the planets to studying other systems far from Robinson, sometimes they’ll be responsible for developing new technologies within the Fleet. The largest of the educational institutes that decorates the fleet, this academy is only available to those that have maintained at least a 3.5GPA throughout high school. The academy has over 300 courses available for students to take, and students are free to choose courses that they feel will best suit their desired careers. In addition to the South Carolina Branch, it has three satellite ships, each offers an additional 25 courses for students, though these are specialized for certain fields. Charleston is specialized for combat, teaching students as many forms as combat as they might need, including weapons, martial arts, and even flight combat. Conway is specialized to teach students various survival skills they’d need in case they were piloting a ship, leading an expedition on one of the planets, or anywhere else they’d need to survive. Lastly, Lexington offers students on courses on how to pilot ships, various engineering courses, numerous astronomy courses, along with various science courses. The academy offers virtually everything students will need to learn. Students will spend anywhere between 4 to 12 years on the academy before they graduate. So far, every single Fleet Commander has graduated from the South Carolina Branch.
