RACES OF AZEROTH AND BEYOND

Azeroth is home to a vast array of races, each with unique histories, cultures, and abilities. Whether you seek honor in battle, mastery of magic, or a life of adventure, your race defines part of your characters identity in the world of Warcraft.

ALLIANCE RACES: DEFENDERS OF THE REALM

The Alliance stands for honor, justice, and unity. Its races are bound together by their ideals and a shared history of struggle against darkness.

HUMANS

The human kingdom of Stormwind forms the backbone of the Alliance. Stormwind's willingness to work with others to find diplomatic solutions stands out as one of its true strengths. Its citizens hold fast to the principles of honor and justice as they defend their settlements, and the Alliance, against any aggressors.

DWARVES

The bold and courageous dwarves are an ancient race descended from the earthen—titan-forged beings of living stone created when the world was young. Hailing from the mighty city of Ironforge in the snowy peaks of Khaz Modan, dwarves are courageous defenders of the Alliance.

NIGHT ELVES

The ancient and reclusive Night elves—also known as kaldorei—have played a pivotal role in shaping Azeroth’s fate. Fighting for the Alliance, many Night elves today still remember events of the War of the Ancients over ten thousand years ago, when they halted the Burning Legion’s first invasion of Azeroth. These ferocious elves will fight tooth and nail to ensure their sacred lands are never again tainted by evil.

GNOMES

The clever, spunky, and oftentimes eccentric gnomes present a unique paradox among the civilized races of Azeroth. Their remarkable optimism in the face of calamity symbolizes the truly unshakable spirit of the gnomes, and their boundless creativity and ingenuity is rivaled only by their commitment to the Alliance’s cause.

DRAENEI

Fleeing the ruined world of Outland—the shattered remains of the planet once known as Draenor—the mysterious draenei crash-landed on Azeroth, where they pledged their loyalty to the Alliance and vowed to destroy their bitter enemy—the demonic Burning Legion. In the wake of the Legion’s defeat, the draenei now seek a new destiny in the blessed Light.

WORGEN

Behind the formidable Greymane Wall, a terrible curse transformed many of the stalwart citizens of the isolated kingdom of Gilneas into lupine beasts known as worgen. Unable to cure their affliction and besieged by the dreaded Forsaken, these worgen learned to control their ferocity thanks to the help of the night elves. The worgen now stand ready to unleash the beast within at a moment’s notice in defense of the Alliance.

VOID ELVES

Many have sought to harness the corruptive magic of the Void. Most who tried have fallen into madness. Determined to use this power for the good of Azeroth, Alleria Windrunner is the first mortal to succeed at defying the shadow's whispers. Coming to the aid of a group of her kin who nearly gave in to the darkness, Alleria has vowed to train these Void elves to control the shadows within them and pledge their newfound powers to the Alliance.

LIGHTFORGED DRAENEI

For untold millennia, the Army of the Light waged war against the Burning Legion throughout the Twisting Nether. The draenei most committed to their long crusade would undergo a ritual to become Lightforged, infusing their bodies with the very essence of the Holy Light. After finally achieving victory on Argus, the Lightforged draenei have undertaken a new mission: protecting Azeroth from rising threats and helping the Alliance push back against Horde aggression.

DARK IRON DWARVES

Known for their fiery tempers and fierce determination, Dark Iron dwarves have a turbulent history with the other clans. A failed coup in Ironforge ignited the War of the Three Hammers, and many of the Dark Iron once fought in the service of Ragnaros the Firelord. Though one faction of the dwarves is pledged to Queen-Regent Moira Thaurissan, others refuse to stand alongside their kin. The Alliance seeks a united Dark Iron clan to harness the power of Azerite and aid their struggle against the Horde.

KUL TIRANS

Kul Tiras was founded by fearless explorers who sailed uncharted waters in search of adventure. As a key member of the Alliance of Lordaeron, the Kul Tiran navy dominated the seas of Azeroth with its legendary fleet. But after years of turmoil and hardship, the kingdom grew isolated and vulnerable to dark influences. Thanks to the help of brave heroes, House Proudmoore has been restored and Kul Tiras is poised to fight alongside the valiant Alliance once more.

MECHAGNOMES

Long ago, a faction of zealous gnomes set out on a quest to improve their bodies and minds. Settling on the isolated isle of Mechagon, they experimented with ancient technology to reverse the Curse of Flesh and become living machines. After facing the perils of full mechanization, they found the ideal balance between flesh and steel. Now reunited with their gnomish cousins, the mechagnomes bring both tenacity and ingenuity to the Alliance.

HORDE RACES: STRENGTH THROUGH ADVERSITY

The Horde thrives in conflict, bound by strength, survival, and a fierce sense of honor. Each race fights for its own reasons, yet they stand together against all threats.

ORCS

The orcs once lived as shamanic clans on the lush world of Draenor. Corrupted by Kil’jaeden, a demon lord of the Burning Legion, they invaded the world of Azeroth. Eventually able to free themselves from demonic influences, the orcs settled on Kalimdor, erecting their great capital Orgrimmar—from where they fight to find their place in the world they once came to conquer.

FORSAKEN

Death offered no escape for the scores of humans killed during the Lich King’s campaign to scour the living from Lordaeron. When his grasp over the Scourge faltered after the Third War, a contingent of undead broke free of their master’s iron will. Calling themselves Forsaken, they now struggle to thrive in a world that has come to despise their existence.

TAUREN

The peaceful tauren—known in their own tongue as the shu’halo—have long dwelled in Kalimdor, striving to preserve the balance of nature at the behest of their goddess, the Earth Mother. Once nomadic in nature, the wandering tauren tribes have since united and settled in their ancestral homeland of Mulgore.

TROLLS

The proud Darkspear exiles were once on the brink of extinction, when Warchief Thrall and his mighty Horde forces were driven to the trolls’ remote island home during a violent storm. These trolls were welcomed into the Horde, and found their place among other outcast races.

BLOOD ELVES

For thousands of years, the high elves of Quel'Thalas drew strength from the Sunwell, a magical font of arcane energies. An invasion by the undead Scourge decimated the kingdom's population and deprived them of the Sunwell's might. Taking the name blood elves – or sin’dorei in their own tongue –the people of Quel’Thalas sated their magical thirst for a time with demonic fel energies. Once the Sunwell was restored, the blood elves worked to rebuild their homeland and help lead the Horde into a bold future.

GOBLINS

The goblins’ craftiness and greed make them masters of mercantilism. Reforging old pacts with their one-time allies, the goblins of the Bilgewater Cartel have been welcomed into the Horde. Honing their inherent cunning to a razor’s edge, the goblins hope to use their explosive inventions to rule the world – or at the very least own a profitable percentage of it.

NIGHTBORNE

Isolated behind a protective barrier for 10,000 years, the elves of Suramar grew increasingly dependent upon the arcane magic of the Nightwell. To protect this font of power, the leaders of the Nightborne struck a bargain with the Burning Legion that plunged their kingdom into civil war. After fighting for freedom from their demonic masters, the Nightborne seek allies in the Horde to help reclaim their place in the world.

HIGHMOUNTAIN TAUREN

Descended from Huln, brave hero of the War of the Ancients, the Highmountain tauren honor the spirits of earth, river, and sky. Though the Legion invaded their lands and sowed seeds of distrust between them, the tribes of Highmountain stand united once more. At long last they are ready to venture beyond their sacred mountain and stand beside their kin from Kalimdor, lending their nobility and strength to the mighty Horde.

MAGHAR ORC

For untold generations, the orc clans of Draenor battled one another in endless war. But when Gul'dan offered them the blood of his demonic masters, the disparate tribes of Mag'har—the orcish word for "uncorrupted"—refused the dark bargain and banded together to drive out the Burning Legion. In the aftermath of the fall of Hellfire Citadel, the Mag'har pledged to one day repay Azeroth's heroes for aiding their cause. As war against the Alliance intensifies, the Horde must call upon the might of the Mag'har to seize victory.

ZANDALARI TROLLS

The Zandalari are a proud people whose origins date back to the early days of Azeroth's history. Their fierce warriors ride dinosaurs into battle, and they possess one of the most formidable naval fleets in the known world. But enemy attacks on their borders—as well as unrest within the king's council—have threatened the kingdom's foundations. By returning stability to Zandalar, the heroes of the Horde can gain a powerful new ally.

VULPERA

Clever and resourceful, the vulpera have survived amidst the harsh desert of Vol'dun for generations. Traveling in close-knit caravans, they watch out for each other as they scavenge supplies from across the dunes. Despite their small stature, they are fierce and cunning in battle, bringing down any enemy foolish enough to underestimate them. Now full-fledged members of the Horde, their wagons have left the sands in search of adventure.

NEUTRALS: WALK YOUR OWN PATH

Some races are not bound by faction and can choose their own destiny.

PANDARIA

Couched in myth and legend, the enigmatic pandaren have long been a mystery to the other races of Azeroth. Pandaren who follow the Path of the Tushui believe that there is a moral certainty to the world: one correct path of right and wrong. This philosophy strongly aligns with the ideals the Alliance represents, and as such the Tushui have pledged their loyalty accordingly. Pandaren who follow the Path of the Huojin believe that in the pursuit of a greater good, inaction is the only wrong. The Huojin believe that morals and ideals are not absolute, but change with circumstances, and as such they are naturally drawn to the pragmatic Horde.

NOTE: The above races except for certain pandaren are considering where the typical member of that race stands between the two factions, but that does not speak on behalf of individuals, some seek their own paths, whether it is to protect azeroth or become a threat to it.

It is, thus, entirely possible to, for instance, have a worgen/orc/night elf/etc. to be neither alliance or horde. Be warned that some inhabitants of the world do not buy face value along your journey.

In this world, characters have the opportunity to prove themselves to the factions present and maybe curry favor from the npcs regardless of faction.
SABERON

The saberon are a race of feline humanoids from Draenor, known for their feral instincts and tribal warfare. Once apex predators in their homeland, they have since scattered across worlds, some embracing shamanistic traditions while others remain vicious hunters. Their agility and deadly claws make them formidable opponents.

QUILLBOAR

Deep within the bramble-choked lands of Kalimdor, the quillboar have endured for generations. Fiercely territorial and distrustful of outsiders, these boar-like humanoids rely on their resilience and shamanistic traditions to survive. Though often seen as aggressive raiders, some quillboar seek a future beyond endless bloodshed.

FURBOLG

Ancient bear-like warriors of Azeroth’s forests, the furbolg have long sought harmony with nature. However, many tribes have fallen to corruption, turning into mindless savages. Those who resist this dark fate strive to reclaim their heritage, guided by shamanistic wisdom and druidic magic.

GNOLLS

Known for their cruel laughter and pack mentality, the gnolls are savage hyena-like scavengers that plague human and elven lands. While most are ruthless marauders, some have begun to exhibit greater intelligence, forging new clans with ambitions beyond mindless destruction.

TUSKARR

Resilient and community-driven, the tuskarr are a walrus-like seafaring race that thrives in the frozen waters of Northrend. Known for their skilled craftsmanship, whaling expertise, and unbreakable kinship, the tuskarr stand as defenders of their icy homeland, resisting the horrors of the deep.

HARPIES

Cursed descendants of night elves, harpies are vicious, winged raiders who dominate the skies of Kalimdor. Their matriarchal society thrives on chaos, with powerful wind magic and razor-sharp talons ensuring their dominance over any who dare trespass in their domain.

SAUROK

Created by the mogu as expendable shock troops, the reptilian saurok were meant to be little more than brutal enforcers. However, they rebelled against their creators, forming warbands that now roam Pandaria, preying upon the weak. Their speed, strength, and predatory instincts make them deadly foes.

JINYU AND ANKOAN

The wise and noble jinyu are the freshwater-dwelling kin of the deep-sea ankoan. Both races share an affinity with water, using its flow to guide their actions. The jinyu, once rulers of Pandaria’s rivers, are skilled in both combat and magic, while the ankoan are relentless warriors who fight the naga in the darkest depths of the ocean.

ARAKKOA

Mysterious avian beings from Draenor, the Arakkoa were once a great empire before their fall into internal strife. Some cling to the shadows, wielding dark magic, while the uncorrupted among them seek to restore their ancient knowledge and reclaim their place in the skies.

MOGU

Forged by the Titans, the mogu were once the ruthless overlords of Pandaria. Known for their mastery of flesh-shaping magic and their towering strength, they ruled through brutality. Though their empire has crumbled, many mogu still dream of restoring their former glory.

DRAKONID

Loyal servants of the dragonflights, the drakonid are powerful, draconic warriors who stand as guardians of ancient secrets. Once ordinary mortals, they were transformed by the dragons into towering enforcers, wielding elemental magic and unmatched strength.

ETHEREALS

Originating from a shattered world, the ethereals are enigmatic, energy-based merchants, assassins, and explorers who navigate the cosmic forces of Azeroth. Wrapped in arcane bindings, they deal in forbidden knowledge, lost artifacts, and interdimensional secrets.

TOL'VIR

A race of Titan-forged feline humanoids, the tol’vir were once the sacred guardians of Uldum. Many remain loyal to their ancient charge, but others have been tempted by dark powers, using their vast knowledge of Titan technology for their own ambitions.

YAUNGOL

Distant cousins of the tauren, the yaungol were long forced into exile and hardened by Pandaria’s wilds. Unlike their peaceful kin, they embrace war as a way of life, fighting fiercely to claim what is theirs in a world that has never shown them mercy.

FEL ORCS

Twisted by demonic corruption, fel orcs are brutal warriors who serve the Burning Legion or remnants of their own shattered clans. With bloodlust-fueled strength and infernal resilience, these orcs are living weapons of destruction.

NATHREZIM (DREADLORDS)

Masters of deception, the vampiric dreadlords manipulate entire civilizations from the shadows. While many serve the Legion, others have their own agendas, weaving lies and betrayals to reshape reality itself.

SATYRS

Once night elves, these cursed beings fell to demonic influence, becoming horned fiends of chaos and corruption. Though they revel in destruction, some satyrs struggle against their dark nature, seeking a path to redemption.

VOID REVENANTS

Born from mortals consumed by the Void, these beings exist in a fragile balance between insanity and enlightenment. They wield reality-warping shadow magic, making them both feared and sought after by those who dare to walk the path of the Void.

KOBOLDS

"You no take candle!" The kobolds of Azeroth are skittish, candle-obsessed miners who infest tunnels and caverns, hoarding whatever treasures they can find. Though cowardly, their sheer numbers and clever traps make them a dangerous nuisance.

MURLOCS

One of Azeroth’s most infamous creatures, murlocs are amphibious, gurgling scavengers that dwell in coastal regions. Though most are simple and aggressive, some rare tribes have shown intelligence, even allying with other races.

GILGOBLINS

Goblins transformed by Neptulon’s magic, gilgoblins are amphibious beings adapted to deep-sea life. While many serve the naga, others seek freedom, using their ingenuity to survive the depths.

HOZEN

Wild, monkey-like creatures native to Pandaria, hozen are chaotic and mischievous. Their unpredictable nature makes them formidable in battle, though their short attention span often works against them.

ANUBISATH

Titan-forged colossi with the appearance of jackal-headed warriors, the Anubisath were once guardians of Azeroth’s ancient secrets. Though many have fallen to corruption, those that remain are nearly indestructible defenders of Titan relics.

Naga

Once proud night elves, the naga were cursed and transformed into monstrous sea-dwelling beings after their reckless pursuit of power led to the destruction of their civilization. Now, they rule the oceans with an iron grip, serving the enigmatic Queen Azshara and ancient forces beyond mortal comprehension.

SETHRAKK

Sethrakk

Serpent-like warriors from Vol’dun, the sethrakk are a cunning and resilient race. Once guided by the loa Sethraliss, their people split between the devoted Faithful and the war-hardened Faithless. Though their empire has fallen, some seek redemption, while others still hunger for power.

The World is Vast—And Ever Expanding

Warcraft’s world is filled with incredible beings, many of which have yet to claim their place in the grand wars of Azeroth. While some remain in legend, others may one day rise to challenge the balance of power.
