It hadn't been difficult to find a bath house. In fact, he'd been all but forced there by the first person he asked to show him the way. Apparently the smell of the river had clung to his hair. He washed, and dressed, and now was on the hunt for something else entirely. He idly braided strands of loose hair over his shoulder as he wandered, asking where me might find where the sick and injured ended up.

Eventually, someone understood him well enough to send him to the temple. He stood outside for some time, wondering if it was what he wanted. Finally, someone heavily bandaged limped out, with the help of what appeared to be a nurse. Well, they did some sort of doctoring here.

He drew up his hood and meekly, quietly entered the important looking space. The rules of the place were unclear. He briefly stopped a passing nurse. "Who is the chief here?"
The young man Andrei approached looked bewildered by his appearance. Puzzled, in fact, by Andrei's word usage and accent. Their exchange would have been long and confusing, but the nurse had a much better idea. Instead of taking the time to deal with this light skinned foreigner, he prattled on that Andrei should follow him, come on, you can talk to her instead.

And so it was that the nurse promptly pawned off the strange man on Maydril.

The thick elf, so unlike almost any here, didn't even pause as she washed her hands in a basin. A glance at Andrei, and she frowned, sighing just slightly. "And where are you from?"
Andrei removed his hood. "I am from the North. I came to Aram to study, and to work. I am a physician." He nodded. "I am trained to help those with injuries. Those injured. I came to ask for work." It was blunt, but it would have to do. "I am called Andrei."

He hated how stupid he sounded. It must sound to the woman like a child asking for work. He mumbled in his native tongue. "I sound like a fool."
The elf stared at Andrei, a brow rising. Of course, she caught his muttering, but did not understand a word of it. The language did not sound at all familiar...except perhaps for once, she had heard it. Her brow rose even more.

"Do you come from a country of rodents?" The delivery was flat; if it was a joke, serious, or mocking, it'd be hard to tell.

She dried her hands on a towel, and finally gave the man her full attention.

"I can not hire you. You're a foreigner, and so am I, so they thought I'd understand you. It happens a lot. If you want to work here, you will need to speak with Sonal Jain. Do not expect much. You are from the north, after all."
"Rodents?" He understood the question but felt like he didn't. "What do you mean rodents? I come from a country of men." He tilted his head. "Do I look like a rodent?"

He fidgeted with his cane. "Where can I find Sonal Jain?"
"'A country of Men', so all from your country have a penis?"

The look the elf gave him was a scathing one, as if he'd said something very poor. Maydril seemed to be reminded that she was busy and had patients to attend to, and just as quickly brushed the human off. "Ask around. I have work to do. She is a very busy woman, herself."

And the elf turned, moved off, slipping into a room a few doors down the hallway.
"What in Hell?" He blinked, incredulous. " 'Women are more gentle' the elf said, hmph. A likely story." He muttered in his native tongue, being not half so polite now that he knew the 'bitch' couldn't understand him.

"Gods forbid anyone in this miserable sweltering bug infested demon rotted pit of a country be helpful."

He sighed and wandered out of the room. Did he even /want/ to work here? Would this entire venture even be worth it? He stopped another nurse, asking in weary tones for the one called 'Sonal Jain.'
Andrei was passed about by servant after nurse after servant. No one really wanted to deal with him, it seemed.

Finally, though, a kind soul - a member of the clergy, it seemed - directed Andrei to where he would need to go.

Unfortunately, the man would find he'd need to return the next day, as Sonal Jain was at the palace seeing after a sick member of the royal family. Well, at least the person who told him that didn't quite stare down their nose at him.
