Welcome to Trivantis! Trivantis is a Strict RP Environment that cares about a setting feeling as much alive as the characters inhabiting it do. We hope to encourage creative writing and provide a rich, ever changing environment for plot weaving and character development. A lot of emphasis is put on continuity and fluid story telling; it's important to remember that not only do we encourage communication and a focus on serious writing, but subsequently roleplay here is more organized than spontaneous or casual.

Trivantis as as a setting will change and grow over time too, potentially dramatically - it is not a stagnant setting where people are set in their ways or stuck with limitations. It is a city of politics and philosophy, diverse culture and religion, knowledge seekers and explorers - every kind of innovative mind looking for ways to improve and understand their world.

    Expect the Unexpected!

Trivantis is a Mediterranean High Fantasy setting based on a Byzantium that developed quite differently from the Constantinople we knew, with more than just a touch of Atlantean inspiration and whole a lot of twist - a magical "Greek" and “Roman" inspired empire where the creatures of legend make up civilization and humans are closer to being the “monsters”. It is a trade city where magic and science mingle; the terms 'ancient' and 'medieval' are used very loosely. While the flavors are there culturally, there are distinct differences from what we might consider proper for a post-classical era. It's arguably much higher tech than your standard 'medieval' setting!

Overall, the setting takes on a largely Medieval Byzantine feel, but with many fantastic elements taking liberties and informing notable differences. It is an unconventional High Fantasy setting in an alternate universe Earth with shared historical elements and remarkably familiar geography and cultures, but otherwise overall divergence - fantastic physics, bizarre biological development and strange large scale events, remarkably different history and especially technological innovation: magic works as a power source to inspire technology, which showcases a mix of late medieval and Renaissance era developments.

There are elements of what one might call Clock Punk and just the slightest taste of Dungeon Punk on the lower end; broad variation of sentient race and the existence of magic, functional alchemy, of the supernatural, and of machines left behind by advanced and otherworldly lost cultures make for much more 'magitek' than allowed in your typical fantasy setting. It also has very strong elements of horror including body horror in The Temple of Experience, involving magics that assist with dramatic prostheses and transplants, mysterious and frightening entities deep underground, acceptance for many supernatural beings, and society dealing with cultural elements of sennibalism.

It's also a highly cosmopolitan city, with influences from fantasy equivalents of the “Middle East” including parts of Northern Africa and Western / Southern / Central Asia. However, due to its key location and corresponding rich history, some minor cultural influences have seeped in over time from every surrounding direction - including Eastern and Western “Europe” and just the smallest dash of the distant north and far east. Generally speaking, the majority of local culture and naming conventions are Latin based and will be people of a nature inspired by ancient and medieval peoples of the Eastern Mediterranean - what is now modern day Turkey, Greece, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Armenia, Egypt, etc.

    More On: Alternative Developments

    See: Magic and Technology

While the era can roughly be compared to that of our 11th - 12th century in style, technologically society is in the thick of a Renaissance and much more akin to the 15th century in development. There has been a surge of interest in the arts, education, innovation, diplomatic interactions, and developing schools of foreign magic. These developments are why the monster empire stands strong and also is something men and elves in large part lack, those of humanoid cultures largely relying on arcane sorcery instead. There is a great deal of innovation with divergent paths of discovery and invention in the monster empire, alternative developments in technology due to magic and alchemy making use of energy sources not found on our earth.

    More On: The Monster Empire

    See: Setting Overview

The monster empire is roughly analogous to the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire, but without the influence of monotheistic religions and with notably more fantastic elements and divergent social dynamics. The lands to the west have been in an increasing state of despair between warring human factions gradually being absorbed by an aggressive hegemony - since the monster folk retreated to the east some several hundreds of years past, tensions between them and the swelling western empire have only gotten worse. There are those who feel the enemy will never make it this far east, but others prepare for inevitable war.
