Frequently Asked Questions
◙ What is the NVPD?
The New Versailles Police Department exists for the soul purpose of protecting the lives of those within the city and maintaining order throughout the city of New Versailles. NVPD is considered the 9th district of New Orleans and is dedicated to upholding the laws and regulations of New Versailles.
The NVPD's jurisdiction extends to both the laws of the mundane world, and those of the supernatural. Despite the stark diversity between the two and the disparity between the supernatural factions, the NVPD strives to serve both worlds with a fair and even-handed enforcement of the law.
The NVPD holds less authority than its military counterpart, Lazarus. Should supernatural events occur outside of the NVPD's ability to contain and negotiate, Lazarus is expected to be contacted to commandeer the case entirely.
The official page regarding the NVPD can be found here.
◙ What is New Versailles?
The city of New Versailles is a supernaturally charged city in the deep south of Louisiana. More information regarding the city itself and its wide variety of subdivisions can be found here.
◙ What is Lazarus?
Lazarus is the special forces military unit of New Versailles. While their presence is not always noticed or needed, they tend to handle the larger infractions where events threaten the veil of the supernatural. In any case where the NVPD cannot fulfill its duties to maintain the obscurity of the supernatural, Lazarus will intervene.
More information on Lazarus can be found here.
◙ Are all members of the NVPD human?
Not by a long shot! The NVPD is home to officers of all shapes and sizes, though most do tend to keep their supernatural double lives to themselves. There is no mandatory disclosure on what you are when you join.
◙ Are supernatural events considered normal?
Not exactly. There are still normal everyday men and women working for the NVPD who have no idea about the werewolves or the vampires in their backyard. Crime scenes involving the supernatural are typically handed off to very specific officers or handled out of the public eye. This designation is decided by Eckart, and such cases are typically presented to the public as far more mundane than they actually may be.
That being said, if you are assigned to a supernatural case, it is expected you will keep it on a need-to-know basis. Police information is almost always confidential, but it's especially so when it comes to dealing with the supernatural.
◙ How realistic is the NVPD?
For the sake of fun and simplicity, NVPD is highly condensed compared to an actual police precinct. Many roles have been glossed over or merged into other positions to save anyone the trouble of RPing something dull or inactive. Furthermore, there's no expectations to follow real life protocol or to douse yourself in actual police terminology; a rough understanding should suit you just fine! If you happen to know more, that's great, but we ask that you don't fuss after others over fine details.
The only important point of realism that we do follow is the chain of command. Please abide by the points of authority and, should your character grossly overstep or lash out at their superiors, you should expect proportional consequences.
◙ What sort of events are roleplayed in the NVPD?
The NVPD handles all manner of criminal investigation and law enforcement! That includes, but is not limited to, handling emergency calls, mitigating domestic disputes, investigating murder cases, performing forensic examinations, enforcing traffic law, responding to robberies, interfering in drug trafficking and more! If you've seen it on Criminal Minds, we probably do it.
If there's an area of law enforcement you don't see represented within the NVPD, you can always reach out to Eckart to see about starting something new.
◙ How do I report a crime?
Using our roster, you can find information on all of our members. If there is an active crime happening in your RP and you'd like an officer to interfere, simply whisper one who's online and, if they're available, they should be able to help! If you'd like to start an ongoing case or simply report something your character witnessed, you're welcome to message an appropriate officer in Furcadia or through RPR.
◙ How do I join the NVPD?
◙ What happens if I act outside of my jurisdiction?
Acting outside of your character's jurisdiction is a punishable offense, and will often scale to the level of misconduct performed by your character. Small offenses may be overlooked, but repeat offenders and gross misconduct -- such as ruining a crime scene, causing public unrest or assaulting a suspect -- may result in your termination from the force.
This is not to punish the player by any means! It's absolutely reasonable for characters to make mistakes and overstep boundaries, and if you feel it's something your character is passionate enough to do, then go for it! Everyone enjoys a good vigilante every now and again. But in the interest of keeping the police functioning as a semi-realistic organization of public servants, the broken chain of command must be addressed and, if necessary, penalization may occur.
It'd just be kind of weird if Deadpool or Red Hood worked for the police department, right?
